Enteringhis11thyearas the leaderofEastern Illinoismen’ssoccer,headcoachAdamHowarthhasorchestratedaprogramrenaissancethelastfewyearsthathasresultedinfourMissouriValleyConferenceTournamentappearances,consecutivedouble-figurewinseasonsandafestiveatmosphereathomegamesatLakesideField.
Hehasrevitalizedthewinningtradition,whichhewasalsopartofasanEIUstudent-athlete.In2008,hegraduatedanaccomplishedseven-playerseniorclassthatledtheprogramto33victoriesduringtheircareers.The2009seniorclasswaspartof34victoriesduring,makingitthewinningestEIUclassofthedecade.
Howarthplayedfouryears(1989-92)atLakesideFieldundercoachCizoMosinaandgraduatedfromEIU.Hewaschosenastheprogram’sseventhheadcoachinJuly2000andhasmovedintofourthplaceontheall-timewinslist.HowarthwillleadthePanthersbackintoTheSummitLeagueinthefallof2011.EasterncompetedintheMid-ContinentConference,TheSummitLeague’sformermoniker,whilehewasastudent-athlete.
The2009PanthersweretheonlyMVCteamtodefeatconferencechampionMissouriStateduringregular-seasonplay.AlexHarrisontalliednineassiststoranksecondintheValleyandseventhnationallyinassistspergame.EasternledthewaywiththreeMVCAll-FreshmanTeamselections.MidfielderJerryMaddialsoearnedHonorableMentionAll-MVCrecognition,theonlyfreshmanintheleaguetoreceiveanall-conferenceaward.
ElevenPanthersscoredagoalin2009andallsixgame-winnerscamefromsixdifferentplayers.SeanMolonywasingoalforsixofthesevenshutoutsandledtheMVCinsaves.
In2006and2007,EIUposteditsfirstconsecutivedouble-figurewinseasonssince1988-89.The2007campaignwashighlightedbyadozenwins,Valleyleagueleadersingoalsandassists,andabevyofindividualhonors
headlinedbytheprogram’sfirstAcademicAll-Americaselection.Withtheir12winsin2007,thePanthersmatchedtheprogramrecordintheValleyera(1996-
present).Eightofthosewinscameinshutoutfashion,asEIUsetanewhigh-watermarkfordefensiveexcellenceintheMVCyears.
ThePanthersopened the2007season4-0afterwinning the teamtitlesat theBradleyCityCentreClassicandUMKCInvitational.Winningtheseasonopenerinovertimeforeshadowedtheheroics that followed,as2007turnedout tobe theyearofovertime.Easternplayed ineightOTgames,postinga4-1-3record.ForwardAlexHarrisonwasinvolvedinallfourgoldengoals,scoringtwoandassistingontheothertwo.
BradPetersledtheleaguewith10-plusgoalsforthreestraightyears(2006-08),becomingthefirstPantherintheValleyeratorecordback-to-back10-plusgoalseasons.Hewasathree-timeFirstTeamAll-MVCselectionaswellasanNSCAAAll-MidwestRegionpickfrom2006-08.MickGaleskiassistedonfiveofPeters’goalsin2007enroutetofinishingwithaleague-leading12helpers,anotherMVC-yearsrecord.
AdamGartner,afour-yearstarterthatclosedouthiscollegiatecareerin2008,becamethefirstPantherandMVCsoccerplayertobeselectedasafinalistfortheLowe’sSeniorCLASSAward.HewasalsoanESPN the MagazineAcademicAll-Americahonoree.
Intheclassroom,Howarth’steamshavealsoexcelled.EasternledtheleaguewithfiveMVCScholar-AthleteTeamhonoreesin2007.MikeLewis,whosportedaperfect4.0GPAattheendofthe‘07fallsemester,wasnamedanAcademicAll-America,theprogram’sfirstsuchhonoree.GartnerlaterreceivedAll-AmericanScholarkudosfromtheNSCAAandaccompaniedhisheadcoachtotheannualconventiontoreceivehisaward.
Howarth’s2006teamprovedtobeoneofhistopall-aroundunits.Defensively,thePantherssurrenderedthefewestgoals(18)intheValleyandshutoutsevenopponents.
PetersfollowedinthefootstepsofotherformidableEIUstrikers,likeJasonThompsonandJimmyKlatter,andenjoyedabreakoutseason.Petersledtheleaguewith11goals,recordingjusttheseconddouble-figuregoaltotalbyanEIUunderclassmanintheprogram’sValleyera.Galeski,whodevelopedintooneofthefinestall-aroundmidfieldersintheconferenceaftercomingtoCharlestonfromhisnativeEngland,joinedPetersontheMVCFirstTeamandNSCAAMidwestRegionSecondTeam.
ThankstoagreatrunawayfromCharleston,postingeightvictoriesinroadorneutralsitegames,the‘06Panthersfinishedwith11wins.Whileanovertimewinatlong-standingrivalWesternIllinoisand the team titleatUW-GreenBay’sNikeClassichighlightedEIU’searly-seasonsuccess,thevictoryoverMissouriStateintheopeningroundoftheMVCTournamentwasunquestionablythepinnacleofthecampaign.
DuringhisfirstyearHowarth led thePanthers toa12-6-1overall mark, an undefeated record against non-conferenceopponents and a fifth-placeValley finish (6-5).ThePanthersfinishedinthetophalfofoneofthenation’seliteconferences,astheValleysenttwoteamstotheNCAATournamentFinalFour.Hecoachedthenation’sleadinggoalscorer(Thompson,anAll-American), threeall-conferenceplayersandwas therunner-upforMVCCoachoftheYear.

In2004,Howarth’steamdidnotallowagoaluntil the21stminuteofthethirdgame,andthatcameonapenaltykick.
DuringHowarth’s tenure, eightEIUplayershaveearnedNSCAAAll-MidwestRegionhonors.Additionally,EasternplayershavereceivedAll-MVCaccolades24times.WithKlatterearningFirstTeamAll-MVCkudosforthesecondstraightseasonin‘05,theforwardbecamejustthesecondplayerinEIU’sDivisionIeratobeafour-timeall-conferencehonoree.Klatterfinishedhiscareeramongtheprogram’sall-timeleadersingoalsandpointsandearnedaninvitationtotheMLS’sSeniorPlayerCombine.
Hespentthe1999seasonastheEIUassistantwomen’ssoccercoach.ThePantherwomenwontheOhioValleyConferenceregularseasonandtournamentchampionships.Sixplayersreceivedall-conferencehonors,includingthePlayeroftheYearandFreshmanoftheYearawards.
In1995,hestartedtheboy’ssoccerprogramatSt.AnthonyHighSchoolinEffingham,Ill.Hewasboththejuniorvarsityandvarsityheadcoachduringhisfour-yearstint.Howarthwasnamedthe1998IllinoisHighSchoolSectionalCoachoftheYearandSt.AnthonywontheIHSASectionalSportsmanshipoftheYearaward.TheBulldogsfinished10-8-6,theirbestrecordsincetheprogram’sinception.
Howarthhascoachedatcollegeandhighschoolcampsthroughoutthenationalongwithassistingandnowdirecting theEastern Illinoiscampsover thepast15years.TheEIUSoccerSchoolhasbecomeoneofthetopteamcampsinIllinoisand20teamshavecompetedforthetitleduringeachofthelastthreesummers.
HeservesasastatecoachfortheIllinoisYouthSoccerAssociationandtheOlympicDevelopmentProgram.Inthespringof2007,hewasanassistantcoachwiththeIllinoisODP(‘91)teamthatclaimedthenationalchampionshipinitsagedivision.Astheheadcoachofthesameagegroupayearlater,theteamfinishedthirdnationally.
Howarth is anativeofSlough,England, awestern suburbof Londonand the setting for theUK-versionofthehitsitcomThe Office.HegraduatedfromEasternin1993withadouble-bachelor’sdegreeinhistoryandjournalism.Healsoearnedhismaster’sdegreeinphysicaleducation(athleticadministration)fromEastern.

A four-year starting goal-keeper at EIU from 2005-08,MarkHansenisnowinhissec-ondyearasanassistantcoachonAdamHowarth’sstaff. AftergraduatingfromEIUinthespringof2009withabach-elor’sdegreeinkinesiologyandsports studies, Hansen spentthe 2009-10 school year serv-ingasastudentassistantcoachwhilecompletingamaster’sde-gree in sports administration.He was elevated to a full-time
assistantcoachinAugust2010. Hansen and his classmates helped lead the Pan-thersto33victoriesduringtheircareers,highlightedbytheprogram’sfirstsetofconsecutivedouble-figurewinseasons(2006and2007)sincethelate1980s.Easternreached theMissouriValleyConferenceTournament ineachofHansen’sfourseasons,highlightedbyback-to-backsemifinalappearances. Hansenfinishedhiscareerwitha1.17goalsagainstaverage,thetopmarkbyanEIUgoalkeepersince1986.Hepostedasub-1.00GAAineachofhisfirstthreesea-sons.His0.88goalsagainstaveragein2006wasabigreasonwhyEIUsetateamrecordintheprogram’sVal-leyera(1996-present) in thatsamestatisticalcategory.Hewascreditedwithfivesoloshutoutsin2006andfourmorein2007,helpingEIUblankeightopponentstotalhisjuniorseason.
Hansenrepresented thePantherson theMVCAll-Fresh-manandAll-TournamentTeamsin2005.HeshutoutVanderbiltintheopeningroundoftheMVCTournamentandalsostoppedVandy’stoptwoscorersinthefirsttworoundsofthesubsequentshootout.Asasophomore,hewasEIU’sprimarygoalkeeperinnineofthe11victories. The 2007 season saw Hansen post a shutout streak of436 consecutive minutes early in the year, registering a pairofshutoutsat theUMKC Invitational to representEIUon theAll-TournamentTeam.Afterhelping lead the Panthersto12victoriesthatseason,his dual excellence as astudent-athleteearnedhimFirst Team MVC Scholar-Athleterecognition. Hansenmadeacareer-high62saves in2008.Hedidnotgiveupagoalinfiveofthe17gamesheplayedin, but was only creditedwithonesoloshutout. Hansen annually as-sisted with the EIU soccerschoolsummercampsandwasactiveinthecommuni-ty,workingwithareayouthleaguesandtheCharlestonFutbol Club. He has sincetakenoverastheCFC’sDi-rectorofCoaching.
A four-year letter-winner atEastern Illinois from 2006-09,Evan Philpott is serving as avolunteer student assistantcoach this season. He is cur-rently completing his bache-lor’sdegree inkinesiologyandsportsstudiesandisscheduledtostudentteachinthespringof2010. Philpottplayedin69gamesduringhisEIUcareer,themostamong his graduating class.He made 46 starts, including
18in2006whenthePantherspostedan11-7-2record.Hescoredthegame-tyinggoalinthefirsthalfofa2006homewinagainstEvansville.HewasthefirstEIUfresh-man to score his first career goal in aMissouri ValleyConferencegamesince2002. Asasenior,Philpottscoredthegame-winninggoalinahomewinagainstBradley,EIU’sfirstvictoryagainstitsinstateandconferencerivalsince2000.Healsotalliedatleastoneassistineachoffourcollegiateseasons. Philpott and his classmates helped lead the Pan-
thers to 34 victories duringtheir careers, making themthe winningest senior classof the decade. In 2006 and2007,EIUposteditsfirstsetof consecutive double-figurewincampaignssincethelate1980sandreachedthesemi-finalsoftheMVCTournamentbothseasons. Philpottalsoexcelledintheclassroom. He was twicenamed an Honorable Men-tion selection to the MVCScholar-Athlete Team. Healso annually assisted withthe EIU soccer school sum-mercamps. AnativeofJacksonville,Ill.,Philpott was also a stand-out wrestler in high school,qualifying for the IHSAstate
