Welcome!

On behalf of the EKU Honors Program, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to our dynamic learning community. For three decades, EKU Honors has remained a national leader in honors education, mostly because of the energy and initiative of students like you. I urge you to become involved in all aspects of EKU Honors life, from our monthly pizza suppers, to our innovative “Sidewalk U.” study-away courses taught in sites across the U.S. and beyond, to conference travel and presentations in major cities such as Seattle, Boston, Denver, and Washington, D.C. (to name only a few of our recent destinations), and much more. I believe you will find that our honors seminar classrooms are the heartbeat of the EKU Honors experience – the place where you will learn by interacting with faculty and fellow students and by “doing” rather than simply listening to lectures. Through your time with us, I urge you to be willing to take intellectual risks, to open your mind to healthy scholarly exploration, and to be energetic, persistent, and resilient as you face the challenges to come.

I am glad you are here!

Mission & Vision Mission Statement The mission of the EKU Honors Program is to provide its students with the best intellectual resources available at the university in order to empower them to attain their highest academic and professional goals. We develop the whole student by way of our interdisciplinary, small classes, our support of student research and travel to regional and national conferences, and our offering of a wide variety of cultural and out-of-classroom experiences.

Vision Statement The EKU Honors Program aspires to national recognition as an exemplary program. Our graduates will be successful in their chosen academic and professional paths, as well as informed and responsible citizens in their local communities and the world. We will build on our traditional strengths by extending honors opportunities to broader segments of the EKU student body while continuing to cultivate a spirit of creative and innovative learning and teaching throughout the EKU community.

Admission & Application Requirements

EKU Honors seeks students who want in-depth, intellectual experiences in college with a strong grounding in an interdisciplinary liberal arts education. GPAs and standardized test scores only tell part of the story, so the EKU Honors application process is holistic in nature and looks for students who: Desire to attain their highest academic and professional goals Want to be informed and responsible citizens in their local

communities and the world Seek to grow through a spirit of creative and innovative learning Wish to contribute meaningfully as leaders within EKU Honors

and the campus community Desire to learn about and engage with viewpoints of people

from diverse backgrounds, both locally and globally EKU Honors utilizes an annual application cycle. New students are only admitted to Honors for the fall semester, unless the student qualifies as an automatic transfer (see “For Students Transferring to EKU” on pg. 8). Students must apply and be accepted into EKU before they apply for EKU Honors. Students should plan ahead to ensure that they will be accepted as an EKU student and still have time to complete the honors application before the honors deadline. The honors application is found online at the EKU Honors website (http://www.honors.eku.edu). The application will open on the first Monday of August each year, and the deadline for submitting applications is 5:00 pm EST on the second Monday in January each year. No late applications will be accepted. The honors application includes the online application, a résumé, a letter of recommendation, an essay, and a creative short answer. Students must submit each part of the application for it to be considered complete. All parts of the application must be submitted by the deadline.

Page 7: EKU Honors · EKU Honors seeks students who want in-depth, intellectual experiences in college with a strong grounding in an interdisciplinary liberal arts education. GPAs and standardized

pg. 6

Admission & Application Requirements All applications to EKU Honors are reviewed after the application deadline has passed. All students will be notified of their application status beginning in mid-February. Students who are conditionally accepted into EKU Honors must confirm their place by May 1, following the instructions in their acceptance packet. Students who do not confirm their place in EKU Honors by the May 1 deadline are not considered part of the incoming honors class and are not members of EKU Honors.

For incoming first-year students: Admission to EKU Honors is competitive, and there are a limited number of spots for incoming first-year students each year. Incoming first-year students are eligible to apply to EKU Honors during the annual application cycle and are only eligible to begin in the fall semester. Each application is holistically reviewed by a team of honors faculty, staff, and students, who take into consideration each part of the application, as well as unweighted high school GPA and ACT scores, to build a class of students who exhibit the previously listed qualities. Incoming classes of first-year students typically have an average ACT of 28-29, with a range of scores from

24-34, and an average unweighted high school GPA of 3.80-3.90. Students who have been identified as National Merit Finalists or National Merit Semi-Finalists are automatically accepted into EKU Honors; however, these students must still complete an information form available via the honors website (http://honors.eku.edu/NMFSF). Students who have completed the Governor’s Scholars Program or the Governor’s School for the Arts are strongly encouraged to apply for admission to EKU Honors.

pg. 7

For current EKU students: EKU Honors accepts current EKU students each year. Current EKU students are eligible to apply to EKU Honors during the annual application cycle. Each application is holistically reviewed by a team of honors faculty, staff, and students, who take into consideration each part of the application, as well as cumulative college GPA, to select students who exhibit the previously listed qualities. Students accepted to EKU Honors as current EKU students typically have an average cumulative college GPA of 3.70-3.80.

For students transferring to EKU: EKU Honors accepts transfer students each year in two ways: Transfer students who are currently in good standing in an

honors program or college at their current institution are eligible for automatic transfer into EKU Honors. These automatic transfer students are eligible to begin EKU Honors in either the fall or spring semesters, as long as all required documentation is received prior to the beginning of the semester in which the student would like to begin. Required documentation for automatic transfer includes a letter from the student’s current honors program or college director/dean, stating that the student is in good standing, as well as an unofficial transcript from the student’s current institution. Students who are interested in the automatic transfer process do not need to complete the honors application. Instead, these students should visit http://honors.eku.edu/transfer-students#2 for more information and further instructions.

Transfer students who are not currently in an honors program or college at their current institution should complete the honors application during the annual application cycle. These students are only eligible to begin EKU Honors in the fall semester. Each application is holistically reviewed by a team of honors faculty, staff, and students, who take into consideration each part of the application, as well as cumulative college GPA, to build a class of students who exhibit the previously listed qualities. Students accepted to EKU Honors as transfer students typically have an average cumulative college GPA of 3.70-3.80.

Scholarships & Awards All active EKU Honors students are eligible for the following scholarships and awards:

Honors Books-on-Loan Award All honors students, regardless of tuition scholarship, will receive the Honors Books-on-Loan Award. This award provides books for all courses, as long as those books are available through the EKU Bookstore. Students may use up to eight semesters of the Books-on-Loan Award, based on when they entered EKU Honors: Students entering EKU Honors as new first-year students: 8 semesters Students entering EKU Honors as second semester first-year

students: 7 semesters Students entering EKU Honors after their first year: 6 semesters Books received through the Books-on-Loan Award must be returned to the EKU Bookstore at the end of each semester. If students wish to keep books for their own reference, they may do so by purchasing the books at a reduced rate from the EKU Bookstore.

Students who graduate as EKU Honors Scholars may continue their books-on-loan benefits as a graduate student enrolled in a program of study at EKU. To learn more about this benefit, visit http://honors.eku.edu/gradbooks. 9th and 10th Semester Scholarships Some students may require an additional semester or year to complete their degree requirements. Each year, EKU Honors will accept applications for extra semester funding from students who are in this situation. Applications typically open in February and are due in April. If a student is awarded an extra semester scholarship, the student will also receive the Books-on-Loan Award for the extra semester(s) of scholarship. For more information, visit http://honors.eku.edu/extra-semester-scholarships.

pg. 9

Honors Provost’s Tuition Scholarship - $2000 per semester for up to eight semesters EKU does not typically stack tuition scholarships. Students who enter EKU Honors as new, first-time first-year will receive the highest EKU tuition scholarship for which they qualify. If a student does not qualify for a higher tuition scholarship than the Honors Provost’s Scholarship, they will receive that award.

Students who join EKU Honors as currently enrolled EKU students will continue to receive the EKU tuition scholarship they were awarded upon entry to EKU and will receive the Honors Provost’s Scholarship if they were not awarded a higher level of tuition scholarship. Students entering with the Dean’s tuition scholarship will be raised to the Honors Provost’s Scholarship level upon entering EKU Honors.

Incoming transfer students may sometimes be able to stack scholarships. Please contact the Scholarship Office (http://www.scholarships.eku.edu) for more information.

Utilizing Scholarships & Books-on-Loan in the Summer EKU tuition scholarships and the Honors Books-on-Loan Award do not typically cover coursework in the summer. Students who wish to use one of their remaining semesters of tuition scholarship during the summer may also use one of their remaining semesters of the books-on-loan award. Students are not allowed to just use a remaining semester of books-on-loan on its own. All students interested in utilizing these awards during the summer must contact both the Scholarships Office and Program Coordinator Katie Patton to have this approved.

EKU Honors offers two curriculum tracks for students. Students must complete the course requirements in their curriculum track, as well as graduate with the required EKU GPA, to graduate as an Honors Scholar (see “Requirements to Graduate as an Honors Scholar,” pg. 20). Students who begin EKU Honors in the fall of their first year at EKU will complete the Honors Flex curriculum. Currently enrolled EKU students and transfer students will complete the Honors Current/Transfer curriculum. Each Honors student will be assigned an honors advisor, who is available to assist students in choosing honors courses that will fulfill their curriculum requirements. The honors advisor is not able to provide students with advising regarding their major requirements or with their RAC number, and students are still required to meet with their major advisor each semester. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with their honors advisor each semester as long as they still have remaining honors courses to complete. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that all of their curriculum requirements have been met in order to graduate as an Honors Scholar.

The honors thesis is the culminating work of a student’s time in EKU Honors and is a chance for students to complete a research project on a topic of their interest and to be mentored by a faculty member with interest in the same topic. Each student must complete an honors thesis to graduate as an Honors Scholar (see “Requirements to Graduate as an Honors Scholar,” pg. 20). The Topic: An honors thesis project may take the form of a traditional research thesis or a creative research thesis. Most EKU Honors students (approximately 90 percent) choose to do honors thesis projects that are closely related to their majors, but it is not required that you do so. Some of the very best honors theses over the years have been produced by students working either outside their major entirely or in interdisciplinary projects only partially related to their majors. The Process: The honors thesis process typically spans three semesters. We strongly encourage students to begin thesis sometime in their junior year so that they may seek opportunities during their final semesters at EKU to present their research at conferences and/or publish their work. Initial preparation begins the semester before a student plans to take enroll in HON 420. Students then complete three credit hours of HON 420 in the next semester while attending the actual thesis seminar course. In the third semester, students complete the remaining three credit hours of HON 420 while independently completing their thesis project and presenting their work at the biannual Honors Thesis Conference.

Occasionally, students may choose to complete all six credit hours of HON 420 during one semester, attending the thesis seminar course and presenting their work at the Honors Thesis Conference during that semester. Students should consult with the honors director if they plan to do this. The Honors Thesis Handbook, along with the necessary forms required for the honors thesis process, are available online at http://honors.eku.edu/honors-thesis-information and contain a thorough explanation of the honors thesis process. Honors Thesis Advising Sessions occur each semester, and students should attend one of these sessions in the semester before they plan to enroll in HON 420.

Activities, Events, & Conferences

Conferences: Each year, EKU Honors travels to four conferences. Students who have a proposal accepted for presentation at these conferences travel to these events at minimal cost (typically only a few meals; major expenses – transportation, registration, hotel – are covered by Honors). EKU Honors consistently brings one of the largest, if not the largest, student contingent to each of these conferences. Kentucky Honors Roundtable (KHR) – meets once each semester KHR is the state association of honors programs and colleges.

Conferences are held once each semester and are hosted by each school on a rotation basis. The typical conference includes dinner and social activities on Friday evening, followed by student presentations on Saturday.

Southern Regional Honors Council – meets once a year, typically in March or April This is the regional association of honors programs and colleges.

A regional conference is held each spring. Proposals for this conference are usually submitted in January before the conference. Recent conferences have been held in Orlando, FL; Asheville, NC; and Arlington, VA.

National Collegiate Honors Council – meets once a year, typically in November This is the national association of honors programs and

colleges. A national conference is held each fall. Proposals for this conference are usually submitted in February before the conference. Recent conferences have been held in Chicago, IL; Seattle, WA; and Boston, MA.

Leadership Opportunities Honors students are typically leaders on campus, both inside and outside the classroom. While there are many, many opportunities for leadership at EKU, there are also specific ways in which students can provide leadership and service to EKU Honors.

Honors Student Activity Council (HSAC): The Honors Student Advisory Council (HSAC) is the student-elected, student-governed body in EKU Honors that organizes service events and activities for all honors students. HSAC's mission is to foster a spirit of service throughout the honors community.

HSAC consists of a President, Vice President, Communications Coordinator, Finance Coordinator, and Service Coordinator. A current list of HSAC members is available at http://honors.eku.edu/HSAC. These positions are elected each spring by the honors student body to serve during the next academic year. Nominations and elections will be announced via email to all Honors students.

Honors Ambassadors: Honors Ambassadors are a group of current honors students who serve as student representatives to prospective students, EKU Honors alumni, and the EKU community. Honors Ambassadors get to share their experiences as honors students as they promote the program to students, parents, and alumni.

Honors Ambassadors are selected through an application and interview process each spring. For more information about Honors Ambassadors, including upcoming deadlines for application, please visit http://honors.eku.edu/HonorsAmbassadors.
