Who was El Greco?
• He was a painter (but also sculptor and architect) from the Spanish Renaissance
• His real name was Doménikos Theotokópoulos, but he was called El Greco because of his Greek origin.
• His most famous works are: “El expolio”, “El Caballero de la mano en el pecho” and “The Burial of the Count of Orgaz”
His life
• He was born in Candia, Crete in 1541.
• He lived in Crete until he was 26.
• Then, he moved to Italy, where he became a Renaissance painter. In 1577 he moved to Toledo, where he lived and worked the rest of his life.
• In Toledo is where El Greco painted his most famous paintings.
Style
• In Crete he was a painter of Post Byzantine icons. His works were very valuable in Crete
• When he moved to Venetia and Rome, he converted into a Renaissance painter with Italian influence, just like Titian or Tintoretto
• In Toledo, he continued with his Renaissance style, but with influences of the Mannerism
His work• Not only pictures, he also made retable (retable of
Santo Domingo el Antiguo or the retable of María of Aragon) and chapels (Chapel of the Hospital of Illescas [it includes a retable, sculptures and four paintings)
• His most famous paintings are:
• “El expolio”
• “El entierro del conde de Orgaz”
• “El caballero de la mano en el pecho”
• “Vista de Toledo”
• “Visión Apocalipsis”

• It is one of the most famous paintings of El Greco
• It is an oil painting produced between 1578 and 1580, when he was in Toledo
• It is not known who is he exactly, but it is suspected that it could be Don Juan de Silva. Other people say that it could be Cervantes.
• He is the typical Spanish of the time.
