What can you do NOW

to prepare for a career in the Health Sciences?

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Page 21: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

• IN ABOUT 3 – 4 YEARS – 1-2 years general education courses

• 2 years in the RT program– MUST BE 24 MONTHS FOR FULL

ACCREDIATION

Page 22: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

HOW MUCH $$$$$$

• To attend ECC $26/unit • End of program = 91 units + ( $2400.00)

• APPROXIMATE PROGRAM • TOTAL = $3,000

• High School (210 units) = free• University $110/unit to $1000/unit• Private RT Schools ~ $15,000 to - $30,000

Page 23: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

Application Prerequisites• Anatomy 32 - Principles of Human Anatomy (4 units)• Physiology 31 - Human Physiology (4units)

– OR Anatomy 34A & 34B

• RTEC A - Introduction to Radiologic Technology (3 units)• Psychology 5 - General Psychology (3 units)• Computer Information Systems13 – Intro to Computers (3 units)• Math 70,73 or 80 –Intermediate Algebra (4 units) (as of 8/2009)• English 1A – Reading and Composition (4 units)• Medical Terminology (3 units)• Humanities Course (3 units)• Contemporary Health, PE (3 units)• Total Units 40

**Equivalent Courses may be taken at other colleges :

Meet with a Counselor for Articulation with ECC

Page 24: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

Anatomy & Physiology

• MUST BE A TOTAL OF 8 UNITS

• Combo classes of 4, 5 or 6* units WILL NOT meet the requirement (ex. Anatomy 30)

• With a 6 unit you may be able to get a credit for Physiology– But will still have to take a 4 unit Anatomy class

Page 25: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

Community College Programnote new req for AS of Fall 2009

• Complete GENERAL EDUCATION CLASSES:• English 1A• Math 40 (beginning Algebra) As of FALL 2009 –• Intermediate Algebra (70) now: 73 or 80) • (Social Science) History or Poli Sci * As if FALL 2009

removed the social and behavioral science course only 1 course is required and it would be satisfied by taking Psychology 5.

• Humanities (? now Hum 1 ok)

• P. E or Health Class

• (SEE WORKSHEET ON WEBSITE or back of handout)

Page 26: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM
Page 27: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

What can you do while waiting to start the

program?

Page 48: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

Recommendations for preparation while waiting

THEATER ARTS – ACTING CLASS

BEGINNING SPEECH CLASS

ADAPATIVE PE ASSISSTANT CLASS (PE 201)

• ESL – Language & Communication classes

• VOLUNTEER (Observation) HOURS IN A RADIOLOGY DEPARTMENT

Page 49: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

More Suggestions While waiting to start the program:

• WORK & SAVE YOUR $$$$$$$– Recommended not to work more than 16 – 20

hours per week outside of program

• FULL TIME – DAY TIME PROGRAM• Monday – Friday ( No weekends)• 7:00 AM – 7:00PM• Optional 1 -2 weeks of evening shift last summer

semester in the program

Page 50: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

Early years in Radiologic Technology

• Nurses or nurses aides taught how to “take an x-ray”

• NO special education

• Only “ON THE JOB” training

• Experience the best teacher

Page 51: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

What is aRADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGIST?

• An important member of the HEALTH CARE TEAM

• Uses RADIATION to create IMAGES of the human body for medical diagnosis and treatment of disease or illness

Page 52: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

Radiologic Technologists

are the largest group of

allied health professionals

in the country

Did You Know...?

Page 53: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

What does an RT do?

Performs radiographic exams to help in diagnosis and treatment of

diseases, injury and illnesses

Page 54: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM
Page 55: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

How RADIOGRAPHS (X-RAYS) ARE MADE

• X-rays created in an x-ray tube – controlled by the technologist

• Patient is placed into a position to see the anatomy best

• Radiation passes through and leaves an

impression on the film inside of the x-ray cassette

Page 56: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

X-rays can provide information about:

• Obstructions (blockage)

• Tumors

• Fractures

• Other diseases & illnesses

Page 57: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

The Radiologic Technologist Role• Preserve life

• Avoiding further harm• Obtaining further

medical assistance• Knowing when

assistance is warranted (most important)

Page 58: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

DIVERSITYEXAMS & PEOPLE

PATIENTS ARE:• INFANTS • ELDERLY• ALL CLASSES• ALL ETHICITY• ALL BACKGROUND

• HEAD TO TOES• TRAUMA• SPECIAL

PROCEDURES• CRITICAL PATIENTS• WALK INS• SURGERY

Page 59: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

ALL PATIENTS

Page 60: EL CAMINO COLLEGE RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

HEAD INJURIES• It is not the

radiologic technologist responsibility to diagnose, but it is useful to have basic knowledge for assessment purposes
