Eat Healthy This Summer
6 HEALTHY SUMMER FOODS TO ADD TO YOUR DIET
It’s summer—that amazing time of year when fresh produce abounds.
Fresh fruits and vegetables have a high water content, loads of fiber,
and are packed with nutrients, and many require no cooking at all!
Corn: Nothing says summer like fresh sweet corn. Two antioxidants - lutein and zeaxanthin - in corn help your eyes filter out some
of the sun’s damaging rays and also help lower your risk of developing age-related macular degeneration - the leading cause of
blindness in people over 60.
Tart Cherries: They deliver a host of health benefits. You may have heard that drinking tart cherry juice can help you get a better
night's sleep, but did you know that compounds in tart cherries may also help you slim down and get leaner?
Tomatoes: There’s no question that sunscreen should be your first line of defense against the blazing summer sun. But eating to-
matoes could give you a little extra protection: consuming more lycopene - the carotenoid that makes tomatoes red - may protect
your skin from sunburn.
Watermelon: Staying hydrated keeps your memory sharp and your mood stable. It also helps keep your body cool (by sweating)
during hot summer months. The good news is that you don’t just have to drink water. You can eat it, too: watermelon is 92 per-
cent water.
Raspberries: Raspberries are a great source of fiber -some of it soluble in the form of pectin, which helps lower cholesterol. One
cup of raspberries has 8 grams of fiber.
Blueberries: Fresh blueberries straight from the berry patch are a special treat! It turns out the antioxidants in them may help
ward off muscle fatigue.
During the summer months, enjoy the plentiful choices at your local farm stand
or supermarket for some delicious and nutritious treats!

Diane M. Mueller
Age: 85
Hometown: Albuquerque
National Senior Games: 50-, 100-, & 200-yard Fly; 400-yard individual
medley
As a teenager, retired Albuquerque attorney Diane M. Mueller grew up
swimming in the freezing waters of Lake Michigan. Now at 84, she is still
swimming and winning medals in the sport’s most challenging stroke – the
butterfly, now just called the fly. The stroke combines a dolphin kick and an
overhead pull stroke that raises the swimmer’s upper body out of the water.
Diane says she loves the stroke that many other swimmers find exhausting.
“I like the rhythm of it,” Mueller said. “It’s more than exercise, it’s almost
meditation.”
In last summer’s New Mexico Senior Olympics State Summer Games,
Mueller qualified for the National Senior Games in the 50-, 100-, and 200-yard fly, and the 100-, 200-, and
400-yard individual medley. She celebrated a birthday before the Games so she will be swimming in the 85 to
89-year-old age range. She is hoping to beat her performance from two years ago at the 2017 National Senior
Games in Birmingham, AL, in which she won Gold Medals in the 200-yard fly and in the 400-yard individual
medley.
This female dynamo maintains a work-out regiment that would challenge many women half her age. Her rou-
tine includes swimming four days a week and bench-pressing and power-lifting three days a week. Though
she hasn’t been weight lifting for very long, she already has set some state records. She also competes in
Masters Swimming competitions. Recently, she added ballroom and country dancing two nights a week to
her routine. Mueller says the dancing is both good exercise and a wonderfully social way to stay active.
Younger athletes call her a “role model” for her dedication to life-long fitness, Mueller said.
In retirement, she also took up painting. Recently, an Albuquerque gallery featured an exhibition of her vi-
brantly colored abstract works. She loves the piano and frequently plays the piano for less active seniors in
assisted living centers.
