Welcome!

Welcome to El Eden Ecological Reserve Training Manual. We’re very excited you’ll be joining us out in the field very soon but we need you to get to work first! This document is meant to brief you a bit on what to expect on the wildlife monitoring in terms of the science training. The information below will take you through the training schedule to give you an idea of what to expect, but most importantly, it will help you get started on the foundation of the wildlife research- learning all about plants, reptiles, bird and mammals species in the region. Plan to have fun, meet a lot of great people, and learn new skills but above all, prepare to work hard. This is a research program, and Reserva Ecologica El Eden use the collected data to work towards sustainable development and other resource management schemes, so it is essential that we train you up to 100%. Thus, while we understand you may be busy with work/school/travel etc., the more you can learn pre-arrival the closer you will be to monitoring and working much faster and safer.

About El Eden Ecological Reserve (EER)

El Eden Ecological Reserve is located about 50 kilometers northwest of Cancun city, in the outstanding bioregion known as "Yalahau" (in Maya means "where the water is born") at the northeast tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. With around 1500 ha of forest and wetlands, the EER has a lot of different habitats for the wildlife such as: migrant birds, several mammals, reptiles and amphibians species. The EER is part of the biological corridor Yum Balam – Sian Ka’an, which is critical for the conservation of important species such as the jaguar.

Wild life in the El Eden Ecological Reserve

* Plants

The reserve lies on the eastern side of Yalahau and is thought to be representative of regional vegetation, with the exception of marine habitats. General vegetation descriptions have classified the area as a tropical semi-evergreen forest. The vegetation maps indicate that the area is a transitional zone between

medium-statured semi deciduous forest and semi-evergreen forest. Investigations using aerial photographs and ground surveys have indicated that the vegetation of El Eden can be broken into five major types: (1) selva mediana (medium-statured, semi deciduous forest, 10–15 meters [m] canopy); (2) different age acahuales (here used to refer to secondary semi deciduous forest with a 7–10 m canopy); (3) tintal (seasonally inundated forest); (4) savanna (including both palm savanna and sloughs dominated by Cyperaceae); and (5) aquatic vegetation. Forest, acahuales, and wetland systems each cover approximately one-third of the reserve. The flora of El Eden contains 100 families, 303 genera, and 414 species. Of all species, 40.3% (166/414) are classified as trees. You will find trees like zapote (Manilkara achras) used for the extraction of “chicle” (gum), Ceiba (Ceiba pentandra), Tzalam (Lysiloma latisiliquum), Chaka (Bursera simarouba) and several species of orchids.

* Amphibians and reptiles

The herpetofauna studied in the El Eden Ecological Reserve A.C., includes 7 amphibian families with 19 spp, among which are reported: Bufo valliceps, B. marinus, Agalychnis callidryas, several species of the genus Hyla, Eleutheradactylus labialis, Leptodactylus melanonotus, Bolitoglossa yucatana and Bolitoglossa mexicana among others. There are 14 reptile families reported with 31 spp., some of these species include: Coleonyx elegans nemosalis, Basiliscus vittatus, Corytophanes hernandezii, Corytophanes cristatus, Laemanctus serratus, Boa constrictor, Coniophanes imperial Thamnophis marcianus, etc (Lazcano et al. 1992).

* Birds

There are over 205 species recorded, corresponding to 38% of the total reported for the Yucatan Peninsula and 45% for the state of Quintana Roo. Approximately 80% of birds and resident species correspond to the remaining 20% migratory species (visitors 15%, transit 5%). 11 of these species (5.12% of total) are in the NOM-059-SEMARNAT 2010 (Official Mexican Standard, compulsory standards and regulations for diverse activities in Mexico).

Page 6: El EDEN Trainning Manual v2

Version 2.0

* Mammals

There have been around 46 species recorded by several studies within the El Eden Ecological Reserve. We currently have camera traps installed at various sites within the reserve which is a very effective method to detect mammals that are difficult to observe. Note that in the reserve were recorded 5 of the 6 species of felids living in Mexico. Some species have been identified under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, of rare, endemic, or ecological importance. For example the jaguar (Panthera onca), margay (Leopardus wiedii), ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi), tamandua (Tamandua mexicana) and tayra (Eira barbara) are considered endangered species, while puma (Puma concolor), red brocket (Mazama americana), white tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), peccary (Tayassu tajacu) and racoon (Procyon lotor) are considered functionally important species.

Research Programs at the Eden Ecological Reserve

The El Eden Ecological Reserve is working on three major projects:

Census of jaguar The work includes the installation and servicing of cameras which provide an estimate of the population of jaguars in the reserve. These allow us to record the sex of the jaguars, reproductive events, and even individual jaguars. It also gives us an idea of the abundance of prey available.

Bird monitoring This project is aimed to enrich the list of birds of the reserve, and to estimate the survival of migratory species during the winter months. Mist nets will be installed as well as set points that will be monitored during the day and night in order to detect species using visual and auditory methods. Reforestation and recovery of burnt areas This project aims to restore the original vegetation cover after forest fires. Starting with the collection of seeds, followed by planting and growing them to finally transport them to the site where they will be finally placed.

Page 7: El EDEN Trainning Manual v2

7

Version 2.0

The seeds are collected from mature plants and placed in a specific area to germinate. They are later collected and transported once the tree is strong enough. Some preparation is done to the planting site which includes eliminating the pioneer vegetation and digging small holes (pocetas) for the plants.

What you must know and need to have for working on each Project

Census of Jaguar

- Good physical condition to walk several kilometers in jungle paths. - Some prior knowledge of the wildlife area in the peninsula.

How can you get it You can get it by reading articles on the web about the Yucatan peninsula wildlife: http://www.yucatanwildlife.com Or please consult the website of the El Eden Ecological Reserve in the biodiversity section: http://www.reservaeleden.org.mx/biodiversidad/9.%20mamiferoshtm.htm There are must be several books in your local library about the behaviors and habitats of jaguars. Bird monitoring

- Some knowledge about the avifauna of the northern Yucatan peninsula.

- Some knowledge on bird songs

- Knowledge about how to identify different bird species
