at the Osceola County Board of County Commission (BCC) Meeting, the Kissimmee/Osceola County Chamber of Commerce presented 16,000 signed petitions supporting a citizens’ ballot initiative to make the County Commission elections nonpartisan.Mike Horner, president of the

Kissimmee Chamber and current State Representative personally hand delivered these petitions to the Osceola County Commissioners at their regularly scheduled board meeting.The Osceola County Commission

failed to put the Non-Partisan issue on the ballot in November. Due to the lack of a majority plus one vote, the Board directed the county attorney not to proceed with the ordinance at this time. Voting yes were Commissioners John Quiñones, Fred Hawkins and Frank Attkisson. Voting no were

Commissioners Mike Harford and Brandon Arrington.The Kissimmee/Osceola County

St. Cloud’s Nolte Road opens soon after ribbon cutting ceremonySt. Cloud, FL – St. Cloud’s Nolte

Road is now open to the public following a health walk and ribbon cutting ceremony June 9 on the southwest corner of Canoe Creek Road and Nolte Road. The 3.1-mile extension roadway stretches from Canoe Creek Road (CR 523) to Hickory Tree Road (CR 15) and

motorists are asked to observe the posted speed limit of 40 miles per hour.“This project has been a success

and city and county residents and visitors to St. Cloud will see the benefits more and more every day,” said St. Cloud Mayor Rebecca

Borders. “Residents will see that ambulance and that police officer arrive just a bit quicker now and motorists will get to where they’re going a bit quicker, too. We are so grateful to all those people who stood by this project and worked hard to make it come to fruition. We thank everyone for their support in this project that will benefit so many people today and in the future.”The Nolte Road Extension Project

construction began in the fall of 2010 and was completed under budget and two months earlier than the projected 16-month duration. The project was originally guaranteed at a $19,522,300 maximum price, but was completed at just under $18.4 million. The funding for this project comes from bond financing to be repaid from future traffic impact fees. The Construction Manager at

Risk for this project was Turner Construction, Inc. Atkins – with local partners Osceola Engineering, Inc. and Hanson, Walter & Associates, Inc. – provided professional engineering services. “We thank the City of St. Cloud,

Osceola County, and the residents for trusting us,” said Turner

Construction, Inc., Project Executive Tom Maurer. “We put together a very good team; a team we presented at the beginning of the project and the same team who successfully completed the project. We made several commitments to the City of St. Cloud about14 months ago and one of them was to hire local vendors to build the road for you. That was a huge benefit to the local economy and to the city of St. Cloud and we are very proud to have completed the project early and at the lowest cost possible to the city’s taxpayers. We want you to enjoy the new road and know that you can now get from Michigan Avenue to the turnpike in less than 10 minutes!” The four-phase project consisted

of the construction of a four-lane divided arterial roadway that includes nine stormwater management ponds and related stormwater conveyance pipes, potable water and reuse mains, curbing, sidewalks, and three signalized intersections. The project was completed with approximately 80 percent of the work conducted by local contractors and 20 percent of the work conducted by companies that offer specialty items not available locally.

Orlando Magic Youth Foundation ayuda a la Osceola County Education Foundation

year, the Orlando Magic is helping Osceola County’s Education Foundation shape the lives of children and give them hope for the future.Through a $20,000 grant to the Education

Foundation’s Bookmark Buddies Club, the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation, a McCormick Foundation Fund (OMYF-MFF) is enabling the Osceola County schools to aid third-graders who are struggling with their reading. Of the 300 kids who participated in the program, 97 percent of them went on to pass the F-CAT and advanced in school.But teaching children reading skills appropriate

for their age levels extends well beyond performance on a standardized test. It also gives

them a better chance at having a successful life, said Kathy Carr, the executive director of Osceola’s Education Foundation.Making a difference in the community is clearly

as important as winning on the court to the DeVos family, owners of the Magic. Magic Chairman Dan DeVos said recently that the mission of his father, legendary Magic owner Rich DeVos, is for the franchise to positively affect as many lives as possible while also putting a winning product on the basketball court.Carr said without the grant money from the

OMYF-MFF the program would likely die out because of a lack of funding. She shudders at the thought of what might happen to some of the children in the program without learning how to read at a young age.

19th Annual Hispanic Business and Consumer Expo a total success

Orlando, FL – The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando (HCCMO) hosted one of their more important year’s events, the 19th Annual Hispanic Business and Consumer Expo held on June 8, 9 and 10.The exposition took place at the

Orange County Convention Center and included activities like the “Health Fair”, hosted by Orlando Family Physicians and Walgreens, free seminars for small business, motivational seminars, business opportunities, entertainment, Hispanic Art Galleries, kids area, and more than 300 exhibition booths with a wide variety of products and services including small companies and big corporations.

Celebrities this year included Orlando County Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, Commissioner Tony Ortiz, Commissioner Wanda Rentas, among others.The entertainment was in charge of

Lucy Pereda, Samy, Tony Soto and La Orquesta de Chamaco Rivera.With the attendance of approximately

17,000 people, the Hispanic Business and Consumer Expo is still the event leader on its category. “The big success of this exposition is a result of the combination of few factors: team work, community, leadership and partnerships”, said Ramón Ojeda, president of the Hispanic Chamber.

Candidato Fred Hawkins, Jr.Ha sido un honor, un privilegio

y una bendición representar al Condado Osceola por los pasados 4 años. Su apoyo, motivación, ideas, y opinión son la fuerza necesaria para cada decisión que tomo como Comisionado de la Junta de Comisionados del Condado, esa es la razón que escojo como lema para la campaña de estas elecciones como líder de la comunidad Líder Guiado por la Comunidad.

Durante los pasados 4 años mi record de votación refleja mi posición en contra de la alza en los impuestos y cargos por servicio. Adicionalmente ha sido mi meta mejorar la eficiencia en nuestro gobierno reduciendo los gastos innecesarios. Una forma de ahorro del dinero derivado de los impuestos está en explorar y alentar la subcontratación.

Para mejor nuestra economía local, he apoyado Impact Fee Moratorium, el cual resulta en nuevos negocios re-localizándose al Condado Osceola. Industrias

con mayores salarios para nuestros residentes. Constantemente me esfuerzo por conseguir compañías relacionadas con la manufactura, biomédicas, e industrias de investigaciones relacionadas con la medicina, para establecerse en el Condado Osceola.

El crecimiento vendrá al Condado Osceola. Para asegurarse de un crecimiento positivo, he iniciado y he apoyado el plan de Narcoossee Corridor. Una visión general con guías para el desarrollo futuro propuesto por residentes del área. Este plan ha sido aprobado por la Junta de Comisionados y ahora esta incorporado en un plan comprensivo, que servirá de modelo para otras comunidades dentro de Osceola.

Una de las prioridades, es y ha sido siempre, la preservación del medio ambiente y los recursos naturals. Debemos proteger nuestros suministros de agua de las violaciones de los condados adyacentes. Con nuevo crecimiento, vienen nuevos

desarrollos y es mandatario que los lugares desarrollados sean abiertos lugares con espacios abiertos y con entornos naturales.

El Condado Osceola ha sido el hogar para mi familia desde el 1969. Durante este tiempo, he servido en numerosos comités y juntas, con el propósito de mejorar nuestro condado para nosotros y las generaciones futuras. La integración con la comunidad es la clave para ayudar al Condado Osceola a convertirse en un mejor lugar para vivir, trabajar y jugar.

En la Universidad de Akron, recibí un grado de Ciencias Políticas y Pre-Leyes. Mis conocimientos me han servido como Comisionado para asegurarme que mis decisiones con respecto a los residentes del Condado Osceola, sean justa, prudente y legales. Candidate Fred Hawkins, Jr.It has been my honor, privilege,

and blessing to represent you during the past four years. Your support, encouragement, ideas, and input are the driving force behind every decision I make as your Commissioner on the Board of County Commissioners. Your involvement and concerns regarding our County is the reason I chose COMMUNITY DRIVEN LEADERSHIP as my campaign slogan for this upcoming election.

During the past 4 years my voting record reflects my position against tax increases and service fees. Additionally, it has been my goal to improve efficiency within our government to reduce unnecessary waste. One avenue to expedite savings is to explore and encourage outsourcing applications that would save tax dollars.

To improve our local economy, I led and supported the Impact Fee Moratorium which resulted in new businesses relocating to Osceola County. Industries with higher than average wages for our residents. I constantly strive for manufacturing, bio-medical, and research industries related to Medical City to establish their business in Osceola County.

Growth will come to Osceola County. To insure positive growth, I initiated and supported the Narcoossee Corridor Vision Plan. An overview of guidelines for future development compiled by residents of that area. This plan has been approved by the

Board of Commissioners and is now incorporated into the Comprehensive Plan. It will be a model for other communities throughout Osceola.

A top priority has, and always will be, preservation of our environment and natural resources. We must protect our water supply from the infringement of surrounding counties. With new growth it is now mandated that developments have open space with natural settings.

Osceola County has been home for my family since 1969. During this

time, I have served on numerous boards and committees for the purpose of improving our county for ourselves and future generations. Community involvement is the key to help Osceola County become a better place to live, work, and play.

At the University of Akron, I received a degree in Pre-Law/Political Science. This background knowledge had served me well as a Commissioner to insure my decisions for the residents of Osceola County are sound, prudent, and legal. My

wife Galyn, daughter Kendrie, and I enjoy our horses and country living.

As a family we are actively involved with our church, Kendrie’s school, and the community.

The Spanish Community is a vital part of Osceola County. Your support and involvement is needed and appreciated.

Kissimmee, FL - El Coordinador del Programa de Belleza de Florida Technical College y tres de los estudiantes de la institución académica recibieron cuatro premios en dos categorías diferentes en el evento “Super Barber Competition” que se celebró a fines de abril durante el Miami Beauty Show. La competencia se dividió en dos categorías, una Estudiantil y otra Profesional, y FTC ganó el Primer, Segundo y Tercer Premio en la Competencia Estudiantil y el Primer Premio en la Competencia Profesional.Todos los estudiantes de Florida

Technical College que ganaron la Competencia Estudiantil recibieron trofeos y premios en efectivo. El ganador del Primer Premio lo fue Ángel Díaz, quien recibió $300. El ganador del Segundo Premio, Joshua Hernández, obtuvo $200. Finalmente, el ganador del Tercer Premio, Víctor Rivera, recibió $100.En la Competencia Profesional,

Pablo Rodríguez, Coordinador del Programa de Belleza de Florida Technical College, obtuvo el Primer Premio, que incluyó un trofeo y $500. “No pensaba participar en la competencia. Sin embargo, varios estudiantes de FTC me animaron, y decidí participar”, explicó el Sr. Rodríguez.“El Recinto de FTC en Kissimmee

ha estado ofreciendo su Programa de Belleza durante poco más de un año, y ya está compitiendo con escuelas de belleza que han estado en funcionamiento por mucho más tiempo”, explica Gabriel Garcés, Director Ejecutivo del Recinto de Kissimmee. “Pienso que esto dice mucho sobre la calidad de la educación que nos esforzamos por ofrecer a nuestros estudiantes... es evidente de que se trata de educación de nivel

avanzado. Nuestros profesores son dedicados, y nuestros estudiantes trabajan duro y se apasionan por su trabajo”, señala el Sr. Garcés.“Es impresionante que estos

estudiantes, quienes están inscritos en un programa de 17 meses, y que únicamente han completado un año del mismo, ya están ganando premios. Ellos han combinado con éxito lo que han aprendido, incluso tomando prestadas técnicas del campo de la cosmetología y aplicándolas al de la barbería. Han sido los pequeños detalles como estos los que les han ayudado a ser exitosos”, dijo el Sr. Rodríguez.Representantes de Major League

Barbers, la empresa de barbería que patrocina el evento Super Barber Competition, sirvieron como jueces en el evento. “De hecho, los jueces nos preguntaron varias veces si estábamos seguros de que nuestros estudiantes realmente eran estudiantes. Ellos no podían creer

el detalle y la calidad de trabajo de nuestros estudiantes. Quedaron agradablemente sorprendidos. Incluso vimos que algunos de los competidores potenciales abandonaron la competencia cuando vieron lo que estaban haciendo nuestros estudiantes”, relató el Sr. Rodríguez.Además de los premios recibidos,

una foto del equipo de Florida Technical College será publicada en Solid Gold Magazine, una revista dirigida a la industria de la barbería. Este es un gran logro, tanto para estudiantes como para profesionales. “Cuando nuestros estudiantes ganan este tipo de premios, su confianza en sí mismos aumenta, así como sus expectativas. En lugar de pensar que únicamente pueden trabajar en una barbería, comienzan a pensar en la posibilidad de participar en seminarios y concursos: en pocas palabras, empiezan a dar rienda suelta a su potencial. Además, los estudiantes nuevos pueden motivarse y comenzar

a pensar: ‘Yo también puedo alcanzar esa meta; puedo alcanzar ese nivel’”.Como una anécdota curiosa, el Sr.

Rodríguez recuerda que durante la competencia en Miami, los estudiantes preguntaban, “¿Donde está ubicada esta escuela? Quiero estudiar ahí”. Kissimmee, FL - The Chair of Florida Technical College’s Beauty Program and three of its students received four awards in 2 separate categories at the Super Barber Competition held late April at the Miami Beauty Show. The competition was divided into two categories, Student and Professional, and FTC won First, Second and Third Prizes in the Student Competition and First Prize in the Professional Competition.All Florida Technical College students

who won in the Student Competition received trophies and cash prizes. The First Prize winner was Angel Diaz, who won $300. The second prize winner, Joshua Hernandez, received $200. Lastly, the Third Prize winner, Victor Rivera, won $100.As for the Professional Competition,

the First Prize was awarded to Pablo Rodriguez, Chair for FTC’s Beauty Program, who received a trophy and $500. “I did not plan on entering the competition. However, several FTC students encouraged me to do so, and I decided to enter,” explains Mr. Rodriguez.“Florida Technical College’s

Kissimmee Campus has been offering

the Beauty Program for a little over a year, and it is already competing with beauty schools that have been in business for a much longer period of time,” said Gabriel Garcés, Executive Director of FTC’s Kissimmee Campus. “I think this says a lot about the quality of education that we strive to offer our students... It is advanced education, and it shows. Our professors are dedicated, and our students are hard-working and passionate,” points out Mr. Garcés.“It is impressive that these students,

who are enrolled in a 17-month program, and who have only completed one year out of the program, are already winning awards. They have successfully combined what they have learned, even bringing cosmetology techniques into barbering, and these details have helped them succeed,” said Mr. Rodriguez.A group of representatives from Major

League Barbers, the barber company that sponsors the Super Barber Competition, served as judges at the event. “The judges actually asked us several times if we were sure that our students were really students. They could not believe the detail and quality of work offered by the students. They

were blown away. We even saw some of the would-be competitors dropping out of the competition when they saw what our students were doing,” elaborated Mr. Rodriguez.In addition to the awards received,

a picture of the Florida Technical College team will be featured on Solid Gold Magazine, a trade magazine for the barber industry. This is a big achievement, both for students and professionals alike. “When it comes to our students, winning this type of awards boosts their confidence and helps them expand their expectations. Instead of thinking they can only work at a barbershop, they start to think about the possibility of participating in seminars and competitions: in one short phrase, they start thinking outside of the box. Furthermore, new students also get motivated and start to thinking, ‘I can get there, too; I can achieve that level.’”As a funny anecdote, Mr. Rodriguez

recalls that at the Miami show, students were asking, “Where is this school? I want to study there.” So, in his view, these awards will definitely generate buzz and open doors for Florida Technical College.

night against the Miami Heat at Chesapeake Energy Arena. The Thunder seemed a little nervous in the first half, considering this is their first time playing in the NBA Finals. They were fierce. The Thunder just needed to warm up and learn how to play with Miami and that’s exactly what they did. It’s only going to pick up form here once they get the concepts and techniques of the Heat down packed. OKC is 9-0 at home and Miami is 4-5 on the road. The truth of the matter is that LeBron

James can not carry his whole team. It’s not going to happen. In any sport a team overcomes any obstacles or struggles by coming together as a team and playing together as one. That’s why you have the different positions to generate and create a TEAM. The chemistry OKC is playing with right is a combined effort amongst all of the players. Overall predictions are that Oklahoma City Thunder will beat the Heat to win the 2012 NBA Finals and I agree.
