Earl Christiansen in MemoriamI was recently notified that Earl Christiansen, the founder of The ElectricalAdvertiser, had passed away. I visited Earl along with his wife, Dorthy atthe Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis on June 4th. He passedaway on June 7th. During my visit, we talked about The ElectricalAdvertiser and while Earl's short term memory was slow we discussedmany of our customers from the early days, his travels to trade shows andemployees. Many of my stories brought a huge smile to his face andDorothy said it was great to see him happy.

Earl began is career in Northwestern WI as a lineman for a utility company.He loved this work and did it for over 20 years. He then moved to Denver,CO and began an envelope sales career. After a few years, he decided toreturn to MN and get back into the utility business. He sold transformersand in 1983 recognized a need for an electrical trade publication to helpbuyers and sellers in the utility business. Earl took listings of transformersand bucket trucks and The Electrical Advertiser was created. I joined Earlin 1984 as a partner and the company began to refocus on electrical con-tractors and plant facilities. In 1990, Earl decided to go back into directsales and sold transformers and lighting products through a company calledDirectElec. He continued in this business until retiring in the late 1990's.

Earl was a good man and entrepreneur. He had great insight into the utilityand contractor industries and his vision helped develop the publication andThe Electrical Advertiser. I am grateful for his industry knowledge, hissales skills, and his friendship.

My sympathies go out to his wife Dorthy of 28 years, 5 children, 18 grandchildren and 23 great grand children. He will be missed by many.

Ten Independence Day Items Aboutthe Bald Eagle

1. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams andThomas Jefferson served on the com-mittee that picked the eagle for thenational seal [Franklin wanted theturkey].

2. Bald eagles have few natural enemiesand live only in North America.

3. Bald eagles get their white head andtail feathers at about 4/5 years of age.

4. Bald eagles are not, and never werebald. The term comes from when "bald" meant "white-headed".

5. Their maximum speed: 40 mph or over 100 mph while in a dive.

6. They can lift roughly half their body weight.

7. The Bald Eagle is no longer considered endangered, and now onlythreatened.

8. The only other kind of Eagle in North America is the golden eagle.

9. Bald eagles mate for life, but if one dies, the survivor will accept anew mate.

10. It is a felony to shoot an eagle.
