Seal Over 60’sOur June meeting was held in Seal Village Hall. It was well attended and it is very satisfying to have such a regular attendance of our members.This month we had bingo, one member being lucky on both cards. Fixing broken computersAn office technician got a call from a user. The user told the tech that her computer was not working. She described the problem and the tech concluded that the computer needed to be brought in and serviced.He told her to "Unplug the power cord and bring it up here and I will fix it."About fifteen minutes later she shows up at his door with the power cord in her hand.

I have a keyboard errorA person turned on the computer without a keyboard plugged in.When she turns on the computer, the computer finds out that there is no keyboard attached and it gives a “Keyboard Error” message.She then asks “Why did it give me a keyboard error?There isn’t even a keyboard attached?

A butcher is shooing a dog from his shop, when he sees £10 and a note in his mouth, reading: "10 lamb chops, please." Amazed, he takes the money, puts a bag of chops in the dog's mouth, and quickly closes the shop.He follows the dog and watches him wait for a green light, look both ways, and trot across the road to a bus-stop. The dog checks the timetable and sits on the bench. When a bus arrives, he walks around to the front and looks at the number, then boards the bus. The butcher follows, dumbstruck. As the bus travels out into the suburbs, the dog takes in the scenery. After awhile he stands on his back paws to push the "stop" bell, then the butcher follows him off. The dog runs up to a house and drops his bag on the step. He goes back down the path, takes a big run, and throws himself

- Whap! - against the door. He does this again and again.No answer. So he jumps on a wall, walks around the garden, beats his head against a window, jumps off, and waits at the front door. A big guy opens it and starts cursing and shouting at the dog. The butcher runs up screams at the guy: "What the hell are you doing? This dog's a genius!" The owner responds,"Genius, my backside!It's the second time this week he’s forgotten his key!"

The saga of a big boxFor reasons I won’t go into, I recently had to arrange a Giant Connect 4 tournament at work. I ordered the game online to be delivered to the office (I thought), but got home a few nights later to discover a HUGE box blocking my front door. I stared at it trying to work out what I was going to do.There was only one option. It was my mistake: I had to carry it in with me. I dragged it to the car (I couldn’t get my arms round it to lift – it weighed nearly 2.5 stone and was wider than my arm span) and just managed to wedge it in.The next morning I struggled to set the thing free at the station. Other commuters gave me looks of pity. Then laughed. But I got it on the train. It blocked most of the aisle and I wasn’t popular, but at least I was part way there. I just couldn’t work out how I’d get it through Charing Cross station and to the taxi rank.Enter, David! David (a complete stranger) overheard me telling a lady the story of the heavy box and took pity on me. Even with two people it involved quite a lot of huffing, puffing and ‘can we just put it down a second?’ s, but David got me and box into a taxi. Just. The 2 hour commute from hell was over. Everything that could go wrong had gone wrong…I couldn’t face taking it out of the box until the day before the event. At which point I discovered that the bar across the bottom that allowed the counters to stay in / come out was a few millimeters too big. Cue a trip to Homebase for one of those things that look like a cheese grater for wood, but turn out to have a name: surform.The next day I was in the office, surforming like a mad thing while receiving bemused glances from colleagues and outright laughing from those who know me better, but I finally got it working. I just had to get it from the 2nd to the ground floor.

For some stupid reason, I came over all independent and turned down help that was offered. I actually said ‘I’ve done a 2 hour commute with this, I can manage 2 floors’. I am an idiot.About 10 feet from the room that was my destination, I heard a crack that was definitely not a ‘dragging a Connect 4 board across the office floor’ sound. It was more a ‘something just broke’ sound. The leg, to be precise. I stood surveying my giant board that was now in

4 pieces. Thanks to some superglue and a handy man, 30 minutes later it was glued, taped and amazingly, it stayed together for the duration of the tournament. It fell apart when I picked it up to take it back, but that was ok. I hid all the pieces in a cupboard and I will be very happy if I never see another Connect 4 board, ever again Helen

HOW TO FIND AN ELECTRICIAN YOU CAN TRUST

Introduction. This short guide is intended for homeowners or others who are considering employing an electrician (the general principles will also work for other tradesman) & you are perhaps nervous or uncertain about how to proceed or what to look for in a good electrician. This guide over the months will give a basic overview of the subject and provide some guidelines to help you choose a trustworthy & competent electrician. General. TV programs like Rogue Traders & Cowboy Builders are great at exposing dodgy tradesmen and their awful practices. This

is rightly so as these kinds of practices can devastate peoples lives. Unfortunately,

a side effect of these TV programs seems to be that, in some people’s eyes, all tradesmen are now viewed as ‘rogue traders’. The truth is that only a very small proportion of tradesmen are out to rip you off. The trick is how to spot them and avoid them.

Where should I start? Start by realizing there are no guarantees when it comes to finding a tradesman who will do sterling work for you without depleting your bank account. However, you can do a lot to put the odds in your favor by not relying on just one factor like “he seems a nice man”, but take a whole package of factors into account. This is what this series covers.Know what you want. First, and It seems obvious, but its important to know what it is you want (in as much detail as possible) the tradesman to do for you. If you are not sure, or it is a complicated job, then say so & a good tradesman will help you focus your thoughts and help out with the options open to you. JULY at Shipbourne Farmers’ MarketThe countryside is basking in the sunshine of high summer and now’s the perfect time to visit the market and to indulge in some wonderful locally grown produce – there really is no better way to enjoy any precious warm days than with a locally sourced feast of summer foods. At this time of year, everything is so good, you can follow the ‘less is more’ precept and keep preparation and cooking to the minimum.Amongst an abundance of produce at this month’s market, you’ll find tender BROAD BEANS, fresh GREEN PEAS, radishes, beetroot, spring onions, spinach, and of course, new potatoes. Cucumbers, beans, both French and runner, and courgettes should be there alongside all kinds of salad leaves and great bunches of fresh herbs.The slow cooler start to the season has been good for STRAWBERRIES, especially now that the weather is warming up to ripen the fruit – so indulge yourself with the best of the British summer fruit all at its peak this month. You’ll discover a completely different experience from the pale imitations that can be found all year round in supermarkets, varieties grown for flavour rather than ease of transport and keeping qualities. Serve with rich golden pouring cream from cattle fed on the lush summer grass and a sprinkling of sugar – add a grounding of black pepper to really enhance the flavour. And don’t miss out on CHERRIES with the season now in full swing, gooseberries, black and REDCURRANTS, and wonderful RASPBERRIES. This is the month for jam makers and you don’t have to make huge vats of the stuff – just a few jars are incredibly satisfying to produce in your

home kitchen, taste marvellous and make wonderful gifts.Annabell’s grass-fed summer LAMB is now at its very finest. It has slightly more fat (giving it the meat flavour and keeps it from drying out) and is ideal for the BBQ. A boned-out leg or shoulder can be marinated overnight and cooks perfectly in under an hour. I like to make up a paste of spices, lime juice and yogurt or try the Moroccan spice Ras al Hanout rubbed over the skin before cooking (try cubed lamb for kebabs). On the fish front look out for MACKEREL – bought silvery fresh from the market and cooked the same day to enjoy at its very best. Midsummer is a great time to enjoy CRAB – all you need to make a feast is to serve dressed crab with simply buttered new potatoes and good mayonnaise, home made if possible. Serve with a chilled glass of one of the excellent English white wines that are now coming onto the market. A JULY BARBEQUEThe amounts depend on how hungry you are, the following is a guideline • Chorizo sausages (1-2 per person)• Fillets of haddock or brill (2 per person)• New potatoes• 1 -2 avocado• 3-4 medium sized Tomatoes• Spring onions• 2-3 Small courgettes• chopped chilli, • 1 lime Split and grill chorizo sausages made with local pork, marinate thick white fish fillets such as haddock or brill in cold-pressed rapeseed oil flavoured with lemon rind and juice, fresh thyme, sweet paprika and seasoning and cook them next to the sausages and serve with new potatoes. Make a salsa of diced avocado, fresh tomatoes, chopped red or spring onions and a chopped chilli all mixed with a squeeze of fresh lime juice and seasoning. For a courgette ribbon salad, wash and top

and tail really fresh small courgettes and cut them into ribbons with a swivel headed peeler. Place in a bowl. Mix together juice from half a lemon, 3 - 4 tbsp olive oil, ¼ tsp dried chilli flakes and ½ tsp toasted cumin seeds, salt and pepper. Toss the courgettes in this mixture and leave to stand for 1 hour. Serve with the barbecued fish and meat.Finish up with raspberries and cream. Simple!

Our activities consist of Ten Pin Bowling at Tunbridge Wells once a week, canasta which we play on a regular basis, Whist Drives, Scrabble - a couple of sessions per month, Darts, Dining Out and Theatre visits. If you are interested in anything and haven't played for a long time we can refresh or teach you. There are also monthly Rambles. We are a very lively group and are still looking for new members.
