IntroductionIntroduction India is a country, which suffers a lot due to the lack of
sufficient power generation. What electricity means to us ? We need electricity for every small things. Large amount of power is wasted at speed breakers. Use of fossil fuels for power generation is harmful,
causes depletion of resources. With increasing population we need a solution using
renewable sources.

What is the solution ?What is the solution ? Solution is to use a power extracting mechanism in the speed
breakers. Okay but How ? As we know that “Energy can be transformed into one another
form”. By converting the kinetic energy of vehicle to a mechanical form
and then into a electrical energy form. Latest renewable source technology used is called “POWER
HUMP”. Use the vehicle weight as input to move the pinion which moves
the generator shaft and power can be produced.

Roller mechanismRoller mechanism Roller is fixed in the middle of the
speed breaker. As the vehicle passes, the cylindrical
portion rotates in the direction of motion of vehicle.
The roller is linked with a shaft of DC generator through chain system.
The roller rotates the generator shaft and the electricity is produces, which can be stored in a battery as for further use.

Simple in construction and pollution free.
Power produced is very low.
Strength and losses are the limitation for this method.

Air piston mechanismAir piston mechanism Due to weight of vehicle
over the curved sheet, the dome goes inside.
The assembly pushes down the spring, which lowers the piston connected with the dome.
This quick action compresses the air inside the compressor, which escapes out from the delivery pipe.

back with the dome as the load removes, which sucks the air again into the compressor.
The exhausted air is stored in an air cylinder.
These repeated steps moves the generator shaft through air pressure.

Rack & pinion Rack & pinion mechanismmechanism
The curved speed breaker is connected with a rack & pinion arrangement.
Pinion is linked with a chain sprocket arrangement.
The sprockets are connected with a shaft, which joins the generator shaft.
Also a flywheel is fixed in the shaft.

The reciprocating motion of rack is converted into rotary motion by pinion.
This rotary motion is transferred to the generator shaft through the chain and sprocket arrangement.
A small (generator shaft) and a big (pinion shaft) sprockets are used, which maintains the speed.
A flywheel on shaft of smaller sprocket is used so as to get continuous rotation.

Rack - pinion arrangement gives good mounting convenience.
Simple in design, and more efficient than the roller mechanism.
Also linking with flywheel gives full rotation of the shaft, after the removal of the load from the breaker.
Less costly than the air piston mechanism and easy in maintenance.

Power calculationsPower calculations Suppose mass of vehicle is 300 kg so, its
weight is 300 * 9.81= 2943 N If the height of the speed breaker is 15cm
suppose Workdone is 2943 * 0.15=441.45 J Power developed is 441.45/60 = 7.3575
W Power produced for 1 min = 7.3575 W Power produced for 1 hour = 441.45 W Power produced for 1 day = 10.6 KW
This much power is much more to light the street lamps for almost full night.

driven gears. No. of teeth of sprockets ratio of 360° by pitch
angle. Length of chain is product of no. of links and
pitch of chain. No. of link is given as The sprocket should contain a odd no. of
links. One smaller sprocket and a larger sprockets will
be used. A 5V dynamo is used to generate electricity.

Power generation with low cost. Simple in constructions and eco friendly. No need for manpower to operate. Will work with light weight and also heavy weight vehicles.
Have to check the mechanism time to time. Can get rusted in rainy days. Should be used in small speed breakers, larger
breakers may break with heavy loads.

ConclusionConclusion Electricity in India has a major problem, so this
method is much more efficient. We can use the power to light the road lamps,
and the present power used for this purpose can be utilized for other purpose also.
We can also use this technique in various stages.
Using piezo electric sensors in the stairs we can also use the human weight to produce power.
This arrangement can be used in our university also, and we can utilize the power to light the lamps during night.
