PresenterPresentation NotesOn the broader "Recent  Developments in Multifamily MEP engineering" question, the landscape is changing for two reasons:  1. The price of PV continues to drop while the efficiency is increasing,  the same time as the price and efficiency of Solar Hot Water systems has stagnated.2. There is much more focus on Zero Carbon/all electrical designs, as the electrical grid gets more renewable, the reduction in Carbon when comparing Gas Heating and Electric Heat Pump Heating is very favorable.  There are added benefits to not using gas, one whole trade is eliminated for site and that saves on sub cost and GC overhead cost.    On the Title 24 differences, electrical heating is still penalized substantially in the energy code, and offsets are necessary to achieve the performance.  If every project type went to electrical heating there would be an issue with the grid capacity.  So I imagine the CEC will leave the electrical penalty in the code for some time…

  • Zero Emissions – Not Net Zero Energy

PV area required to achieve NZE:

  • Construction Cost: Lower

    Key Drivers:Reductions• Eliminating Solar Hot

Water saved $215,000• Eliminating Natural Gas

    saved $168,000

    Additions• Electric DHW added

    $105,000

    Net• $242,000 lower cost

  • Energy Use: -32% Emissions: -77%

  • Annual Utility Cost Savings

    Normalized by Gross Building Area

  • • Zero Net Carbon Affordable Housing can

    • Be Construction Cost-Neutral

    • Offer Lower Utility Bills

    • Be Designed and Built Today

    • It’s really about Zero Net Carbon (not Zero Net Energy)
