GOSPEL LEARNING
The Gospel reading today comes from St. Matthew, he presents the story of the birth of Jesus from Joseph’s perspective. The message of the angel of the Lord given to Joseph in his dream tells us much about the child that Mary bears and his role in God’s plan. He is conceived by the Holy Spirit. His name will be Jesus, which means “God saves.”
GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 1: 18-24

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

LIVING THE GOSPEL
1. SITUATION
Do you think it was easy for Joseph to trust God and God’s messenger? Why or why not? In what ways are we called to trust God in our lives today? Is this an easy or difficult thing for you? Why?
LIVING THE GOSPEL
2. GOSPEL THEME
Joseph does as the angel of the Lord directs. He takes Mary to be his wife and accepts the child in her womb as his own. Joseph and Mary are both cooperative with God’s plans. They are both models for us of what it means to be faithful servants of God.
LIVING THE GOSPEL
3. GOSPEL CHALLENGE
We too can trust in God. He cares for each of us and is always with us. Spend some time talking as a family about the importance of trust in your family life, including the ways in which children trust the adults in the family as well as the ways in which the adults trust the children. Lastly, talk about how your family trusts in God.
TRIVIA: EMMANUEL
The name Emmanuel (or Immanuel) means “God is with us”. This was the name given by the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary when he told her that she was to conceive God’s son. The name first appeared in the Book of the Prophet Isaiah as a sign that God would protect Israel through King David’s lineage.
