We find ourselves looking at the program for the final concert of the year and remembering how it was only yesterday that Sam Wiseman was a freshman losing his mind on the football field. It seems like just last week that Grace Baker and Ben Blake were “Elizabeth’s sister” and “Will’s brother” respectively. It seems like such a short time ago that Mr. Renneke was taller than Carter Billen, though he never had as much hair. Life in a high school can be measured in a multitude of ways. In our music department we can tick off concerts on both hands as we prepare for performance after performance. Although it might seem we are just completing one concert and then preparing for the next, there is a much greater educational agenda being shared every day in our rehearsal room. Learning music is preparing students to be successful in life. The benefits of the study of music to total academic success are well documented. Tonight we invite you to tap the brakes and spend an hour with us as we share music and our successes from the past year. We have much to be proud of and much to be thankful for. The threads that weave our concert together tonight are the four ancient elements; earth, water, fire, and wind. Our musicians have added a fifth element – heart* – and we share some of the best heart statements with you in the pages ahead. Our best wishes follow the Class of 2017. We have been glad to share the last four years with them. We look forward to your visits; be sure to join us for alumni events. You can soon officially say “back in my day...” Forever Cardinal Bound,
Michael Renneke Barry Hitt *Sorry, ‘Captain Planet’ fans. Not quite the same.
exEmplary Soloist
Award The Exemplary Solo Recognition Project expands recognition of outstanding student soloists at the WSMA State Solo & Ensemble Festival. State festival adjudicators identify exceptional soloists at each of the state festival campuses through a two step process: nomination and final selection. Students who are selected for the award receive a certificate from WSMA in recognition of their outstanding performance at the State Festival. Step 1. Nomination Throughout the day, adjudicators have an opportunity to nominate soloists whose performance was truly exceptional – beyond what is typically expected for this age group. Step 2. Final Selection At the end of the day, each adjudicator selects the most exceptional soloist(s) to receive the Exemplary Soloist Award from among those nominated.
MEMORIAL DAY 2017 PARADE & CEREMONY
May 29, 2017
9:15a Meet in BMO Band parking lot Warm-up/Meet 8th graders
10:00 Parade lines up 10:15 Parade begins 11:15 Irvine Park Ceremony begins
(approximately) 12:15 Irvine Park Ceremony ends (approximately)
µ We still need 8 more parents to volunteer to help with traffic control during the parade and pass out water post-parade.
µ High school students will be wearing their band uniform.
µ Middle school students wear black on bottom, red on top.
µ High school students are dismissed following the conclusion of the ceremony at Irvine Park. (Plan ahead for where you park your car!)
If a student won’t be able to attend the Memorial Day parade, we need a note/e-mail from a parent/guardian excusing the student. While we appreciate that students are planning ahead, being responsible, and letting us know about their absence, a parent/guardian must excuse them to relieve the liability.
