EarlyLifeEliyahu Ben-Shaul Cohen, or Eli Cohen, was born in Alexandria, Egypt to adevoutJewishfamilyin1924. SyriaHaving ingra7ated himself to the ruling elite inDamascus, Cohen was invited to military facili7eswith Syrianmilitary officers, including tours of theSyrian-controlled Golan Heights, where he lookeddownonthefarms,villagesandroadsofIsraelthathadbeenfrequenttargetsofSyrianmortars.Cohen’svisitstotheSouthernfron7erzoneallowedhim to provide Israel with photographs andsketches of Syrian posi7ons.
