Food Manu-Crafturing is a collaborative studio project with Rachel Peterson. After conducting an urban design proposal for the East Side Industrial District (ESID) in Portland, we decided to suggest a laneways concept akin to the Melbourne, Australia laneways system. The architectural node at the eastern terminal of the laneways system is a mixed-used complex including a production market, winery, medium scale food processing units, townhouses, and apartments. This combination of uses was determined after analyzing the surrounding context and finding a need for food retail in the area. Given the Buckman neighborhood to the east and the industrial sanctuary to the west, the site between 10th and 11th on SE Taylor St. was ideal for this type of program.

NET ZERO CALCSARCHITECTURE @ ZERO COMPETITION GRASSHOPPER SHIFT |

SHIFT is a design project that demanded a high degree of consideration and calculation of climatic conditions while abiding by a rigorous formal approach. The facade is tuned to the position of the sun with relation to the windows of the external rooms and the photovoltaic shading devices. These devices adapt to their location of the facade and transform in pattern as they move along the skin. There are three distinctly different shading devices that are designed to simultaneously achieve maximum shading and maximum exposure. By allowing the facade to gently lean backward on the Southern and Western sides, the building maximizes the allowable light that can hit the photovoltaics. DIVA for Rhino was used to conduct a thorough daylight toprove the effectiveness and net zero sum for the building.

CONCEPTS IN CONFLICT URBANISM

RAPID PROTOTYPINGSEPARATE | TOGETHER

This thesis is a body of work that allowed me to investigate a series of design ideas involving conflict border zones, furniture design, environmental efficiency, digital integration into the built environment, explorations in architectural forms and concepts in conflict/border urban planning. This collective body of work is in part, a personal exploration in design and simultaneously a case study in conflict border conditions. The work can be viewed through the lens of design or through the lens of social/political human rights. This case study is intended to be applied to any urban condition that involves contested boundaries i.e. Kashmir Region, Belfast, Cypress, U.S./Mexico Border, etc. Can architecture facilitate bridging between people and communities? How can law makers, designers, and community members facilitate co-existence and interdependence with communities of difference engaged in conflict?

An installation collaboration with 16 architecture students that blurs the line between furniture and architecture. BRIDGING is intended to function as an interface for human activity, specifically resting and eating. The initial intention is to have the piece function as a complementary element of a food distribution hub. Further development will include Arduino controlled LED light responses to various inputs.

Urban Sound Sanctuary is a collaborative installation concept for the north park blocks in Portland, OR. It is a system of milled plywood panels that act as acoustic attenuators and dampeners. The sheltered configuration of the panel system provides an acoustic differentiation from the noises in the city. It encourages both a tactile interaction and a noticeable alteration in the users acoustic environment.

RAPID PROTOTYPINGBAYT CHAIR

The BAYT CHAIR is designed to function as a lounger with side table and a formal desk for classroom situations. The chair was specifically designed for the k-12 school in the SEPARATE TOGETHER project, to be used in the classrooms, public spaces, and learning commons. The integrated tablet function allows this desk to become part of a trend for furniture and built space in the future. Immediate access to information in the built environment is the newest frontier for designers and this is a modest proposal for a rethinking of how we consider even the most basic forms of the built environment.

The FLO LOUNGER is a restrained and elegant single piece of plywood that allows the body to flow and adjust into several positions. It is incredibly well balanced yet surprisingly lightweight. When positioned against a wall, the FLO LOUNGER can function as a bench with a side table.
