Project Title Burnt Out

Section 1: Rationale (approx. 150 words) MINIMUM 140 MAXIMUM 160

My project is about a couple who want to start a fresh new life away from the girlfriend’s problems in her household. These are to do with drugs, violence and emotional abuse. The film will show these problems metaphorically. My overall concern is to portray violence, love and abuse to my audience in a non-mainstream form; so that the audience understand the metaphors within the film. My target audience will sadly already have an awareness of abuse, my interest of the topic is to represent it in an unusual way.My idea is important as I don’t want to promote violence, I want to make people aware about the real problem with drugs and how it affects people.

I’ve learnt that creating visual metaphors are important during the first 12 units. My skillset since joining the course has been focused on Director, although I have built my confidence around all key media skills.

Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 200 words) MINIMUM 180 MAXIMUM 220

For my idea, I’m going to create the format as a short film, and my aim for my overall project and storyline to make the audience aware about the problems of drugs and violence by using metaphors to verbalise what I want to say. As this film will feature violence and love, my inspirations for this project is my own experience and Quentin Tarantino as I admire how he used violence visually to create a message. As this project includes guns, I will need to research other filmmakers that have created a certain ending scene like what I want to produce as well as certain realistic cases where people have threatened with guns for money or drugs. My target audience is young adults as my message will be more relevant to them. My role in the project is the director, writer and producer.

For this project I will need certain props to be able to create the metaphors I want to produce within this idea and I will carry this out by researching particular props, and costumes I want for

This section provides an opportunity for you to clearly explain the concept and aims of your project, the research and ideas that will support its development, what you anticipate producing, the levels and types of resources that you will need and an indication of the form in which you will complete and present your final realization within the allocated timescale. Answer the following questions: -

What is the concept (media format design i.e. Video, documentary etc What is the aim of your project? What are you trying to achieve/say? What (who) are your influences? Identify major elements of your project: What will you research? Who is your target audience? Explain your role in the project. Explain technical requirements of your project.

Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 150 words) MINIMUM 135 MAXIMUM 165

After the project is produced, I will reflect and evaluate my project by looking through my production diary, my research and the final product of the skills I’ve used. I will also film a behind the scenes log to reflect on how I used my skills to create the storyline I want so I can evaluate on what I’ve learnt during the process, and if I had to comprise or get new ideas during the production. I will also document the changes through the progress tracker and get peer reviews.During the evaluation process I will also log into my progress tracker and get lecturer feedback on the final edit. I will also reflect if I managed to get to my aims and analyse on what I’ve created by also getting feedback on YouTube, Vimeo and Instagram. I will also add an

CHAPTER 1

Introduction

This project portfolio is a report of my extended project for my second year UAL extended diploma

in creative media film and television. Within the first chapter, there will be an introduction to who I

am as a person, and what influences shape me to become the person I am currently. Going further

into the first chapter, there will be my two ideas and what inspired me to create them. This chapter

is followed by my research plan, ideas and who am I.

The Background of my Project

For my first idea I’m going to make a short film based on the problems of drugs, abuse and violence.

I decided to choose these particular topics as it is something that I’ve had to watch in my life. The

first chapter of my project portfolio presents the background of my project idea, my inspirations and

about my skills that I have gained and used through-out the course and about myself as those

components have helped me discover myself and also my work due to what I have surround myself

in, in terms of inspiration.

This is followed by why that particular topic that’s going to be shown in my final project is important

to me. For my research, I’m going to look into Quentin Tarantino’s films and see how it makes

violent into something to make people aware of, and not something that will make people or the

audience violent. I’m also going to look at some of my favourite filmmakers such as Jean-Luc

Goddard and Wes Anderson and see how they put their stories and characters together so, I will be

aware of how to produce my film and my story.

For my second idea I thought I would make a documentary and experimental film about

skateboarding, and how it’s changed people’s lives, and why it’s important to them. The format of

the film is going to be around 5 minutes, and the target audience is going to be young adults and

those interested in skateboarding for what it is. The film is hugely inspired by Pontus Alv who runs

and created Polar Skate Co which is one of my absolute favourite companies as he brings art into

skateboarding. The film is going to be interviews of skateboarders that I know, or some that I’ve

never met before about what skateboarding means to them, as well as some skateboarding parts.

11

Page 12: elisabenaggounefilmtv16.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewFor my idea, I’m going to create the format as a short film, and my aim for my overall project and storyline to make the

For my research, I’m going to find people I know from the skateboarding community and interview

them as well as researching different skate films.

As I presented my two ideas to my lecturer, I decided to go with my first idea as I felt happier being

able to create a story that I know I can produce within the time we’ve been given. As well as the

research into the idea and the topic of the film, there is more background to the project and that’s

why I went with my first idea because it includes characters, a story and a message created by visual

metaphors. What inspired the background of my project was Quentin Tarantino, however the idea

got triggered by simple ideas I had of a gun, a clown and a couple trying to run away and watching

Tarantino whilst coming up with the idea made me want to produce it even more. I was also inspired

by my last film Flame which I took a big risk with going from making commercial short films to doing

the complete opposite

This section is intended to provide a context for your project. It answers this question:

“What special factors were at work that might have influenced the conceptualisation and execution of your project?”

Here you can take some of your previous work, from earlier units, to address some of the following questions. You can use any medium (Videos, photos, audio, sketches, etc.) to answer these questions

Answer the following questions using your Project Proposal to help you, but this is an opportunity to develop your rationale in more detail.

What is it that makes me do my project? (Refer to your Who am I Task and your previous work over this academic year)

My personal experiences that influence my choices for my project(Your Idea for the project, my role in the project, how it relates to my future career)

What is the basic premise of my project? (What is the idea for the project?)

What do I seek to achieve? How does my project relate to my target audience?

Demonstrate your achievements through proposing and realising a project (Hello and Friendship), which integrates the skills, knowledge and understanding acquired throughout the course.

Write about your one-year experience on the course and what you have learned during the course.

Compare where you were when you enrolled on the course and where you are now.

What is my project about?

My project is about the awareness of drugs and abuse through characters and a storyline. I decided to choose this topic in particular as it is something I’ve had to deal with in my life as in getting myself exposed to those things due to the fact I’ve had to watch it in front of me.

I wanted to make a film of it as the whole context of those problems in my life are complicated, I know I can express it through film. The subject, and the film I want to create is important to me as I’ve been planning these characters since my last film ‘Flame’.

My role in my project is the director as I want to create certain visuals for the characters, the theme and the story so it could be understood to my target audience. I’m also going to be writing a short script like I created with my previous film, so the topic can be visually and verbally understood as the topic I have chosen is incredibly sensitive in general. The project is important as it will educate the audience watching the film about the real problems of drug and violence abuse.

The film is about a couple who are madly in love, and want to metaphorically run away from the problems in the girlfriend’s household. The couple then decide to start packing, and are incredibly happy to start a fresh new life until a very unusual character gets introduced, and threatens them with a gun for their money they are using to start a new life with to buy his kick and due to mental health problems caused from drugs. They then they try to get away as quick as possible, and he shoots the girlfriend’s boyfriend in the ribs as they run; the rest of the story ends on a plot twist. I also want to make people more aware that violence is still happening everywhere, and you cannot escape from the truth of reality.

Explain the subject matter for your project, and why it is important. When defining your interest and or topic and or theme, define it regarding some observable event.

Also add your role in the project

For example:-

“Today more and more teenagers are completing their education without real prospect to find a job which will pay bills and offer a decent start in life. Facing the challenge of not being employed and having to pay the bills, Maria a 23-year-old veterinary nurse has decided to look for alternative ways of earning money. The film I have created for my FMP is a story about Maria’s struggle to earn money to pay the rent and not be evicted from her home by the landlord who gave her 24 hours’ notice to find the money. Faced with the deadline and not heaving job or someone to borrow the money, Maria in desperation turns to crime. She decided to rob the local shop.

My role in this project is Writer/Producer and Film Director.”

Why my project is important?

This project is important to me as the topic I’m making the film about is an important part of my life, and it’s the only way I can visually speak about it as it’s impacted my life. I want to use my skills that I’ve gained through this course, and that I also learnt myself when I first got introduced to filmmaking. I feel that because of the topic, I can visually put it together using metaphors of drugs and emotional abuse through props, colours, music and narration.

I also want to educate people in the way of seeing the violence as an art of being aware of what abuse of violence and drugs that is everywhere in society, but not to promote the problems.

Figure 4 Black Honey Hello Today, 2018 Dir Nadia Lee Cohen diymag

Describe this in general sense as a statement of why you wanted to do the project. For example, as a desire to improve something or a desire to understand something, to entertain, inform, educate, to develop skills and knowledge in given media industry context, etc.

Write a short version of this chapter straight into your Research Plan.

My Research Plan

Table 3- My Research Plan

EXTENDED PROJECT - RESEARCH PLAN No of Words

Interest/Topic/Theme 150

This film I want to create is important to me as it’s a part of my life that I’ve watched, and experienced. I want to create that message I want by using metaphors to create the story, so I’m going to look at similar films that use metaphors to create something the way to say but visually.

For my research I’m going to research about violence, and gun use in Quentin Tarantino’s films as he uses it to create a message in the film I am going to create. I’m going to carry out this research by studying his films and how he projects violence and drug use which is what my idea is based on.

I’m also going to look at some real life cases of crimes to do with drugs and violence, so I can build my characters up realistically.

• This should include researching existing similar media products.• Anything and everything that is already written and done about your

interest/topic in the form of written work, video, audio, interactive elements such as websites, blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram posts, etc.

• Make sure that your research does not include internet based sources only. You should include at least two books, the range of magazines and other non-online sources.

Why is it important? - Importance 100

This is a short version of the chapter above.

This film is important as it is awareness of drugs through another way of storytelling, so more people can understand the real problems of drugs abuse and violence anywhere.

My research question(s) 100

What am I trying to find out?

17

Page 18: elisabenaggounefilmtv16.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewFor my idea, I’m going to create the format as a short film, and my aim for my overall project and storyline to make the

For my project, I’m trying to find out how other filmmakers use violence, drugs and romance as an art form of educating their audiences with storytelling and why it works.I’m also trying to find out how especially Tarantino creates violence and how he makes his audience never forget his films due to how powerful they are. My research questions are how can metaphors be used visually to make the audience think about the violence in a film? And how can violence be portrayed in other techniques in film?

As violence is a very harsh topic, I’m going to use my research on how to portray visually and metaphorically.

Research Design 100

As the topic of my film idea is quite sensitive, I’m going to carry out my researching by studying the best visually violent films who portray it very well, so I can use similar techniques to produce it.My target audience will already be aware of the problems of violence, and abuse as I’m targeting young adults.

The skills within the film I’m producing will include visual metaphors to portray the subject I want create. However, I’m also going to use simple techniques to make the topic more relevant.

For my production research, I’m going to look at media equipment tutorials before starting my production.

Here you have to introduce the design of the research. What you have going to research and how data was collected (research methods). You have similar chapter later in this report. Here you should write a short version of what you write in the report.

Subject you are going to research Target audience Skills and techniques to be used Production research

Refer to your research methodologies and methods in Unit 12.

Literature/Resources Review

Introduction

The introduction should be relatively brief, simply providing an overview of the chapter

Within chapter two, this chapter will include the resources and inspiration I have studied and researched for my extended project that have made an influence on my further research, studies and development of my final idea for my project. The chapter will start with my practitioners report which looks at two prominent relevant directors that connect with my idea as well as take huge influence onto my work. This chapter looks at books, films, and report cases on crimes that link with my story that are realistic as well as web sources that will help me with my overall production. It will concluded with the ideas that I have come up with and conclusions of all the resources used in this chapter.

Here is some guidance for the structure and completion of this chapter.

Tell the reader what you have learnt from previous work/literature/resources and how you position yourself in relation to previous work in chosen discipline/theme/topic/interest, within which your project is located.

Provide evidence that you are well informed.

Answer questions (What? Why? /How? /Look for specific problems and issues (theoretical and practical)/how media product communicates with the audiences/background of the artist and the project).

Examine and explore existing media products, practices and ideas in spirit of creativity and imagination

A Literature Review starts with your research question – What are you trying to find out? Once you have your research questions, you can start. A Literature Review enables you to gather information, knowledge ideas etc from existing media sources, such as books, articles, journals, podcasts, web sites, documentaries etc. As you gather this information, it will either support your original research question, or provide you with new areas to research, or even make you consider an alteration in your research plan, and a change to

I’ve watched this video so many times that after studying the visuals I noticed that The 1975 were hugely inspired by True Romance, 1993 written by Quentin Tarantino. They referenced the film through having a gun, wearing a Hawaiian shirt and a leopard outfit. Other references I noticed was the use of the location being in America, the writing on the cinema display that says the poetry is on the streets in French and how in the end the girl writes on a napkin which is the same as True Romance “You look so cool!” instead of “You’re so cool!”. The other references are shown throughout the entire video which you will be able to notice even if you haven’t seen True Romance. Here are the references in images:

The End of the F***ing World

I wanted to review The End of the F***ing World as the characters within the series are hugely similar to the characters I’m currently building on as through-out the whole series they portray that they are troubled teenagers who have been traumatised by certain things that have happened to them in their lives. After finishing the whole entire season, I began to notice references and themes that relate to the characters for my final major project that triggered ideas. In the end of the f***ing world they also referenced True Romance and Pulp Fiction. This product is very similar to what I’m planning to create as it’s based off teenagers but also focus on traumatised themes of the characters that link to crime and love which happens later on in the season.

My work relates extremely to TEOTF due to the character development, and how they subtlety referenced Tarantino which is what I’m aiming for. This shaped my project as it’s made a big

25

influence on my character building and development and how I want to portray their emotions and how they start creating crime as they were traumatised. From this media product, I’ve learnt that character development and a story storyline that is made simply and I want to carry that out successfully in my project.

In this section you need to examine and explore existing media products, media practices and ideas in the spirit of creativity and imagination. Identify different media projects related to your media project. Record and analyse findings.

What are similar media products and how is my work related to them? (position yourself and your project in relation to similar media products)

How have similar media products influenced my project?

How have they shaped my project?

What did I learn from similar media products? (compare similar media products, how it influenced your perspective and ideas for the project)

Conclusion

Answer the following questions: -

Who or what was my inspiration for my project? Refer to Chapter 1, and your “Who am I?” task to help you answer these questions.

Contextualisation of my study – this is, “What was your motivation to do your project?” Refer to Chapter 1 and your Project Proposal to help you answer these questions.

CHAPTER 3

Research Design

IntroductionThis chapter is ‘How-to’ section of your EXTENDED PROJECT. In this chapter you have to introduce the design of the research, how data was collected.

The introduction should be relatively brief, simply providing an overview of the chapter. For example:

This chapter explains research design for my EXTENDED PROJECT. It starts with research questions and follows by the description of the research design and research methods used in my project.

Research Questions

Start with stating the intent of your Extended Project – what are you trying to achieve?

Outline the key characteristics of your project. Write about your overall research aim. Ask yourself: “What do I want to find out?”

You have to base your research design on your research questions Write clear research questions, detailing what you wanted to find out and why?

Each piece of resarch needs to have a question, before you can start. The research activity should be supportive and relevant to the type of information you are trying to find out.

Research Design

In this part of the chapter, you will expand on what you wrote in your project proposal. Write about what you researched and how you collected your information/data (research activities).

Remember, in this chapter, you will only write what you have researched and what research activities you used. In the next chapter, you will write about your findings, analysis and conclusions

This primary research is anything done by you, such as:- Online questionnaire – you could ask your Facebook friends to comment on your

project idea and give you some additional ideas how you can make it better. Get the feedback from your Lecturers and peers and reflect on it in relation to your

journey. You can contact companies, the council, artists, depending on what your project is

about to get their opinion on your project idea. You can use your phone or tablet to research, take photos of possible locations and

places that you can use in your project. Practical activities such as creating models, drawings, recording, filming, working in

Photoshop. Experimentation

Target Audience ResearchAsk yourself questions: Who? What? Where?

30

Page 31: elisabenaggounefilmtv16.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewFor my idea, I’m going to create the format as a short film, and my aim for my overall project and storyline to make the

Who is your target audience? Who are you aiming your product at? What type of audience is it? Investigate the target demographic and record the type

of media or entertainment they consume. Where can you find this out? You can use, ‘YouGov Profiles’ site to find out about

your target audience demographic. (secondary) You can set up interviews or record a ‘Vox Pops’ (primary) to find information about

your audience. Skills and Techniques Research

Come up with the plan of what skills and techniques you will need to research to produce an effective, original and to near professional standard project.

For example, you can watch tutorials or read about how to achieve specific skills and techniques that you will need for your project (secondary) (cross reference)

Experiment with range of skills yourself (primary) (cross reference)

Production ResearchExplain what and how: o People needed for the production/availability (how: emails, Facebook, Skype

conversation, etc.) o Research production roles that you will need to carry out and how to do it

successfully (how: the internet, media books, etc.) o Production schedule (how: create your own) o Budget (How: secondary internet, primary ask yourself) o Recce research/location needed (how: take images, contact individuals for

permission, etc.) o Health and safety research ( How: take images, check locations yourself, ask for

permission) o Visual ideas (storyboard optional) (How: take images, create sketches, get

inspired by other people ideas, etc.) o Props (how: make a list, ask to borrow, make it, buy it, use what you have)o Production (techniques, hardware, workflow) (how: research what you need /

how: try it yourself) o Post -production (Edit, colour correction, VFX, etc. (how: read, watch how other

people/professionals do it, try it yourself)

Conclusion

List all research activities

What activities did you conduct to answer your questions and collect the data? Write about the information and data you collected; your choice of data presentation and how you structured your information.

The research activities should be identified such as:

Observations (observational drawings; using photography, video and audio to collect data)

CHAPTER 4

Research Findings

In this chapter, you will summarise the collected data and the statistical treatment, and/or mechanics, of analysis. You should start this paragraph by briefly restating the topic/theme of your project (take it from Chapter 1).

Explain the object of each question, research activity, point out results, and present those results in a chosen form of summarised data. Select method of presenting data carefully.

In a quantitative study, the results usually begin with a description of the sample (e.g., sample size, description of participants who were excluded and why, handling of missing data). Next, descriptive statistics (e.g., frequencies/percentages for categorical variables, means, standard deviations, and ranges for continuously measured variables) are presented.

In a qualitative study, the results often include many quotes from participants who were interviewed. Here you should also present your non-textual elements such as photos, videos, audio files, maps, tables, charts, mind maps, SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis, etc.

Findings/Data analysis What did you learn from your research and how did it inform our project?

Present, explain and contextualize findings

Background and context of the work (refer to work produced in Chapter 1) What is it that makes me do my project? My personal experiences that influence my choices (idea for the project, my role in

the project, how it relates to my future possible career) What is the basic premise of my project? What do I seek to achieve and how it relates to my target audiences?

Use Findings to contextualize my Project. Present and Discuss Findings. (refer to work produced in Chapter 2)

What are similar media products and how my work relates to them (position yourself in relation to similar media products)

How do similar media products include my project? How they shaped my project? (thought and action) What did I learn from similar media products? (compare similar media products,

how did they influence your perspective and ideas for the project – talk about both script and techniques)

CHAPTER 5

My Project

Introduction In this chapter you should present the level of self-direction, personal initiative and commitment necessary to progress ideas and find solutions, and the practical, theoretical and technical comprehension, appreciation, knowledge and proficiency necessary to achieve identified goals. The ability to plan and organise work within a given timeframe and the efficient production of outcomes both individually and collaboratively.

Pre-Production Produce Pre-Production Portfolio which will formally define your project (location

survey; risk assessment; treatment; script; budget; schedule etc.). Pitch your proposal to the production board (video recording of your production

board presentation)

Analyse your target audience. Investigate the target demographic and record the type of media or entertainment they consume

Production Project management techniques, (notes of team meetings; production and post-

production schedules; call sheets, etc.) Team and individual performance monitoring (weekly check against schedule)

Development – Demonstrate development (photos from the shoot, screenshots from computers). Keep daily production and post-production diary and reflect on your production process.

Post-production Describe post post-production of your project.

Assess your production and post-production process. Describe, and critically analyses any production problems and the solution you experienced.

Presentation In this part of chapter, you should demonstrate ability to be able to present a creative media production project to a specified audience. Your EXTENDED PROJECT has to be presented appropriately (effectively; imaginatively) and presented with suitable (relevant; purposeful) media conventions to suit the target audience.

You have been given the showcase of the Summer Shows (see calendar for dates). You need to explore the different strategies needed to present your Extended Project.

35

LO 3.1 4.1 5.1 7.1 7.2

Your presentation will very much depend on the medium of your Extended Project. In the Summer Shows, there will be the possibility to screen your films, exhibit your photos, or display your scripts and Pre-production Planning Documents. You need to:-

Decide what medium is most relevant for your project and target audience, and detail why you think it is the most relevant approach.

Design your presentation, paying particular attention to your target audience. If you are producing a horror video, a screening at 3pm in the main street is not appropriate. You need to detail and plan all elements of your presentation, from the physical exhibition space to the supporting promotional material and supporting paperwork such as a programme.

Write about what influenced your decision to present your work in a certain way. You should look at other events which have showcased productions similar to yours, such as Trailers, Art Galleries, and Festivals.

CHAPTER 7

Project Evaluation

Critically evaluate your finished media project against the agreed requirements and parameters.

Answer the following questions: Introduce the project in your words List five strengths and five weaknesses in your final design Was there a theme for the design ideas? Can you describe it? Can you reference any

influences here? - art movements, designers, media companies/campaigns, etc. What experiments and exploration did you do (what happens if). How did it affect your

development? Find a similar type of design publication - place it next to your own - what

comparisons/difference can you identify? What were the key areas of development in this project? - use your daily reflections to

help you with this Review your proposal - what changed, what developments did you make, did you manage

to complete everything you set out to achieve? What did the client think of your concept? How did that make you feel? What could you do to adapt the work produced to improve and develop it? Is the final work appropriate for the needs of the project? Does it sufficiently answer your

brief? Reflect on your pitch to the board; how did you feel about it before? Did it go better or

worse than you expected? What was the feedback from the client/lecturer? What do you think you could improve next time?
