Other Activities
Eligibility:Three Levels of Instruction
This program is designed for students beginning their study of Russian, those who have complet-ed only one or two years of Russian and those who have taken no formal Russian language training at all. Students are placed in classes at the Pedagogical University based on the language skills they bring with them on the trip. The program is intended primarily for college-level students. However, high school students are accepted with the recommendation of their instructors. The classes deal with all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Classes meet about 15 hours per week. Some assignments involve interacting with the citizens of Petrozavodsk, turning the city into a life-size language laboratory. In addition, there are lectures (in English) on various aspects of classical and contemporary Russian culture.
AccommodationsStudents are housed in a Pedagogical University dormitory and take their meals in a student cafeteria. This gives them the chance for regular contact with their Russian counterparts. The American director of the tour is on hand to assist with learning and living adjustments.
The entire program costs $3,995 and includes round-trip transportation to Russia, ground transportation in Russia, housing, meals, four under-graduate semester credits, St. Scholastica registra-
tion, participant fees, study materials, Russian visas and instruction at the Karelian Pedagogical University. A $50 deposit reserves a space in the program. The deposit is refundable up to March 28, 2008. The balance is due April 4, 2008.

The 2008 Russian Language Study Tour
Four undergraduate credits $3,995 including transportationTours of Moscow & St. Petersburg
The College of St. Scholastica, the only private college in northeastern Minnesota, has sponsored study abroad programs for many years. This intensive Russian language program is held at the Karelian State Pedagogical University in Petrozavodsk, Duluth’s sister city in Russia. The Pedagogical University has a strong foreign language program with instructors specially trained in foreign language education. (St. Scholastica, in turn, conducts a summer English-language program for Russian students and consistently accepts students from the Pedagogical University throughout the regular academic year.) Students in this program stay in the Pedagogical University dormitory and have considerable opportunity to meet and interact with Russian students who are eager to make friends with their American counterparts. In addition to academic work, there are numerous outings and field trips escorted by Russian teachers and students. Indeed, contact with Russian speakers outside the classroom plays as important a role in language training as formal coursework. American students are encouraged to spend most of their time with Russian speakers — not with other Americans. Petrozavodsk, some 240 miles northeast of St. Petersburg, is the capital of the Karelian Republic and an ideal spot for summer language study. It is located on the shore of Lake Onega at the edge of a wilderness of incompa-rable beauty. The people are extremely friendly and hospitable to Americans, especially to those with ties to their sister city, Duluth, Minnesota. With a population of 280,000, Petrozavodsk is large enough to support a variety of restaurants, shops, theatres, museums and other cultural amenities to add richness to one’s stay there. On the other hand, the majority of the people in Petrozavodsk speak only Russian, so students are not likely to encounter as many who want to practice English as they might in larger, more cosmopolitan cities.
The Karelian Pedagogical University is the oldest educational institution in the region. It was founded in 1931 with two departments and only 50 students. Now the university trains 3,500 students to be teachers. Highly qualified and enthusiastic profes-sors constitute the teaching staff. The university also offers a full range of courses in the arts and sciences. Teacher-training programs expose students to a variety of approaches to learning, help clarify their motives for becoming teachers and develop special skills and competencies. The university is well-equipped for student research work and the language lab facilities are excellent.
