IELTS Test CentreCardiff University is an official test centre for the British Council International English LanguageTesting Service (IELTS). Exams take place at least once a month all year and University staff arehere to assist you with your application. Experienced staff are also available to counsel studentswho wish to take different examinations at other UK centres.

The Bridge ProgrammeThe Bridge Programme focuses on Englishlanguage skills, study and professional skills, examstrategies and British academic culture. Classesare normally held between 9.00am and 4.00pm.This will normally include appoximately 20 hoursper week plus directed studies. All students studyall areas of the course. The combination andcontent of each study module helps to producea confident student who is capable of operatingin English in every aspect of their life. The mainareas covered are:

English UsageThis develops general language ability acrossthe four skills and broadens your proficiency in:� grammar� vocabulary� comprehension� communicative fluency� pronunciationproviding you with the language base on whichto build exam strategies, professionalcompetence and study skills. All of these skillswill allow you to survive outside the classroomand in your chosen career.

Exam StrategiesExam strategies are essential to students whoneed an IELTS score to enter their chosen degreeprogramme or to prove English languageproficiency to a variety of employers. Training willbe provided on the techniques and strategiesnecessary to perform successfully as an IELTScandidate. There is an IELTS Examination Centreat Cardiff University, and all students can take theIELTS exam once they complete the BridgeProgramme. The cost is included in the coursefee for all students studying on the 9-monthprogramme and will be arranged by the EnglishLanguage Programmes office. Students may takean additional earlier IELTS examination at theirown cost.

Study SkillsStudents learn and practise the core skills neededto successfully complete their chosen degreeprogramme. Included in these modules are skillssuch as note-taking, summarising, text structure,understanding lectures, making presentations andparticipating in seminars and tutorials. The coursealso introduces Pre-Undergraduates and Pre-Foundation students to learning strategies, Britishculture and the traditions of British universities.Longer courses introduce students to the CardiffUniversity campus and academic facilities byproviding training in the use of computer systemsand software and how to use the University’sresource centres.

Professional SkillsThis module teaches each student how toprepare and present professional reports, in thestyle and appropriate language for the businessand professional world. You will also learn how toemploy your language awareness to successfullyadopt critical thinking skills. Not only will you havean intensive course at a centre of academicexcellence but you will be taught by highlyqualified Cardiff University staff in an environmentthat also offers academic and professionalcounselling, state-of-the-art computer suites andfull use of the library and sporting facilities. TheUniversity is recognised internationally and is wellknown and respected by major employers.

Guidance and supportStudents studying on the Bridge Programme willreceive educational and professionalcounselling and support throughout the year.We will offer guidance throughout yourapplication process and advise you on theappropriate channels for career development.

Course dates and feesThe Bridge Programme has three entry points:

� September (to June)� January (to June)� May (to June)with a ‘long weekend’ break in the Autumn andSpring semesters.Dates and fees are given in the chart below.Fees are usually payable in full on the first dayof the course, although September-entrystudents may pay fees in three instalments andJanuary-entry students may pay fees in twoinstalments. The first instalment is due on thefirst day of the course.

Exam strategies and IELTS practiceExam Strategies are crucial to students studyingEnglish, and your future academic studies willdepend on them. To help you, we havedeveloped a series of lessons that provide youwith training in the techniques you will need tosuccessfully complete your university exams.

There is an IELTS Examination Centre at CardiffUniversity. If your offer is conditional on anIELTS score, we offer classes to help youprepare. We will also arrange for you to take theIELTS exam in Cardiff towards the end of yourPre-Sessional Course. The exam fee is notincluded in the course fee.

Study SkillsAcademic study skills are invaluable and webelieve that all university students should takethis course. In these classes, you will learn andpractise the core skills needed to complete yourchosen degree programme. They include skillssuch as note-taking, summarising, textstructure, referencing, data analysis,understanding lectures, making presentationsand participating in seminars and tutorials.

Academic orientationOur Academic Orientation lessons introduce youto the Cardiff University campus and academicfacilities. They provide a basic introduction inthe use of computer operating systems andhow to use the University’s resource centres.They will also provide information about learningstrategies, British culture and the traditions ofBritish universities.

Guidance and supportStudents studying on the Pre-Sessional EnglishCourse will receive educational counselling andsupport throughout their course. We will gladlymake arrangements for you to visit your newUniversity department and are happy to offer ouradvice and assistance during your transition.

And our services do not end there. We offeropen access support classes in Englishlanguage and academic study skills as well asone-to-one tutorial sessions to all full-timeinternational students at Cardiff University.

Course dates and feesThe Pre-Sessional English Course is a full-timesummer English course available for 5, 8 or 11weeks between June and September.

As these are short, intensive courses it isessential that students arrive in time for thebeginning of the course.

Please note that the cut off dates for allPre-sessional courses are 9am on the firstWednesday of the course. Students who arriveafter this time will not be permitted to join tojoin the course.

TuitionThe tuition fees for the Pre-Sessional EnglishCourse do not include accommodation orpersonal spending costs.Your tuition fees must be paid in full by yourfirst day of class. We regret that pre-sessionalcourse fees cannot be paid in instalments.

The International Foundation Programme

IntroductionThe International Foundation Programme is aone-year academic programme in Business,Law, Engineering and Health and Life Sciencestaught at Cardiff University. It is designed to giveyou the academic and English language skillsyou need to enter an undergraduate degreescheme. The Cardiff University IFP is the onlyfoundation programme that offers automaticprogression into Cardiff University.

Who can apply?The International Foundation Programme isdesigned for:

� Students whose secondary school-leavingqualification means that an extra year’sstudy is necessary to reach the appropriatelevel for undergraduate study in the UK.

� Students with appropriate academicqualifications who need to develop theirEnglish language and study skills inpreparation for an undergraduate degreeprogramme at Cardiff University orelsewhere in the UK.

� Students from outside the European Union.

Why choose the Cardiff IFP?

� The Cardiff University IFP is the onlyfoundation programme that offers automaticprogression into Cardiff University.

� Strong academic training in Business,Engineering, Law or Health & Life Scienceswill be provided on campus by CardiffUniversity academic staff to give you fullpreparation for your intended degreeprogramme.

Some students wish to improve their Englishlanguage skills before joining our InternationalFoundation Programme. The Pre-InternationalFoundation Programme (Pre-IFP) is an optionalsummer course in English language and studyskills designed for students with offers to studyon the International Foundation Programme atCardiff University.

Students studying on the Pre-IFP receivepersonal attention and support throughout thecourse, whenever it is needed. In addition tohelping develop language skills, the course isan excellent introduction to academic study anduniversity life.

Students holding conditional offersStudents who have offers for the InternationalFoundation Programme conditional on achievingan IELTS score of 5.5

(TOEFL iBT 68) can attend our8-week Pre-IFP course.

The 8-week course is designed to preparestudents to take the IELTS examination.

If a student already has IELTS 5.0 (or if theycan achieve IELTS 5.0 before the end of June)and they then successfully complete* the 8-week Pre-IFP course at Cardiff University, theycan automatically progress to the Foundationcoursewithout taking the IELTS examination again.

* “successful completion” means that studentsmust have minimum attendance of 90%,successfully complete all assignments and testson the course and have a positive attitude tolearning.

Students holding unconditional offersStudents who already have unconditional offersare welcome to study on the Pre-IFP course.Many students choose to arrive in Cardiff earlyfor a number of reasons:

� You may wish to settle into Cardiff Universitylife before the IFP begins in September. This

allows you to focus on your studies as soon asthe Foundation Programme starts.

� Students who choose to study on the Pre-IFP course often do better academically andare more confident in their English languageabilities.

All English language programmes at CardiffUniversity are taught on campus by qualifiedUniversity staff and you can rely on our excellentreputation for first class educational facilities.

Twelve resource centresAs a full-time student you will have access tothe twelve resource centres found throughoutthe campus. Each resource centre contains avariety of general and subject specific libraryreference materials, study facilities andcomputer work stations. Information andsoftware in each centre are continually updated,providing access to the latest knowledge andresearch in all areas of academic study.

Computing facilities for everyoneEach resource centre has plenty of networkedcomputer workstations and printers. This meansthat you can access the internet, your email,CD-ROMs, online journals and other informationat any time – some operating 24 hours a day.

As an English language student at CardiffUniversity, you will automatically be issued witha free email address and can use the internetat no cost for as long as you like – helping withyour studies as well as keeping you in touchwith family and friends.

In-sessional language support throughoutyour studiesThe English Language Programmes staffcontinue to provide language and study skillssupport for you during your undergraduate orpostgraduate degree programme at CardiffUniversity. The In-sessional team offer an openaccess support programme on a first-come first-served basis throughout the academic year.Open access support is available to all studentsfrom outside the EU; EU students are welcometo enrol if there is sufficient space. This supportcomprises workshops and one-to-one tutorials.There are also free subject-specific classes forboth undergraduate and postgraduate studentsin many academic schools. This year theseinclude Architecture, Business, City andRegional Planning, Engineering, Journalism, Lawand Social Sciences.

Entry assessment and regular monitoringDuring the first week of any course, we use astandard placement exam and course-specifictesting techniques to determine your Englishlanguage abilities in listening, reading, speakingand writing. You will be assessed even if youhave an IELTS score or equivalent. This allowsus to place you in classes with students whohave similar needs, allowing you to maximiseyour learning and ensuring you feel challengedbut not overwhelmed.

Innovative teaching materialsCardiff University English language coursesfollow a core syllabus developed by our ownteam of specialists, using recognised texts,coursebooks and source materials as well asdrawing on relevant and entertainingsupplementary materials – current newsarticles, magazines and periodicals, televisionshows, videos and IT.

The syllabus varies according to which courseyou study so that we meet the different needsof – for example – a student about to start apostgraduate degree programme at CardiffUniversity or someone improving his or herGeneral English for career reasons.

Intensive language and cultural studiesTo become fluent in another country’s language,you must also be fluent in its culture. Weconcentrate on developing essential languageskills (grammar, reading, writing, listening andspeaking) using task-based activities, currentevents and British themes such as literature,history, culture, education and art whereappropriate. This means that you learn to useand speak English in everyday real-lifesituations –whether at University, in theworkplace, with friends, in shops, in restaurantsor at home.

Teaching and learning methodsThe course employs a variety of teachingmethods, all chosen to deliver the tuition youneed in the best possible way.

LecturesLectures are classes given to large groups ofstudents. Lectures allow you to gain acomprehensive base of knowledge. Lecturersmake use of a range of resources and facilitiesto provide the information you need. Duringlectures, you will be given written material(handouts), information about exams andessays, and multi-media presentations.You may even find that you are invited to giveyour own presentation.

SeminarsThese are smaller discussion groups of three toten students led by tutors. This is an ideal timeto discuss any questions after lectures and anopportunity to fully understand the subjects youare studying.

TutorialsYou can arrange to meet any tutor to discussany aspect of the course. For example, if thereis something you did not understand in alecture or seminar, or if you want to discuss theprogress of your project or essay – or any othertopic you want to talk about.

All students are encouraged to speakindividually to their tutors if they have anyquestions or problems; your tutor will always bepleased to see you and happy to help.

Official recognitionOnce your English language course is finished,you will receive an official Cardiff UniversityAttendance Certificate. It is proof of your timewith us and makes an excellent addition to yourCV - demonstrating to future employers yournew language abilities as well as your initiativeand independence.

Universityaccommodation provides you with the idealopportunity to meet people from differentcountries with a wide range of interests andcultural experiences. Our students tell us thatliving with other students in Universityaccommodation is the best way to get to knowCardiff and your classmates.Cardiff University offers an excellent standard ofstudent accommodation. 75% of our individualstudy/bedrooms have private showers and toilets,and students generally share kitchens andrecreational facilities, including a sports centre,shop, launderette and social areas. All our hallsof residence have 24 hour security and are withineasy travelling distance of the main campus.We recommend that all international students –especially those new to Cardiff and the UK – takeadvantage of the benefits of living in a CardiffUniversity residence.

The Cardiff experienceLocated two hours west of London – with itsown international airport and easy connectionsto both Heathrow and Gatwick – Cardiff is theperfect place to live and study. There are cafés,pubs and nightclubs, concerts, opera, drama,comedy clubs and several modern multi-screencinemas. The city is also one of Britain’s mostsuccessful shopping centres, complete withmodern shopping complexes, pedestrianisedshopping streets, indoor/outdoor markets andan old-fashioned collection of glass-canopiedVictorian and Edwardian shopping arcades.Cardiff’s green spaces – 330 parks and gardens– reach right into the heart of the city (andUniversity campus). They provide ideal spots forrelaxing with friends or even catching up onyour course reading.

Sports and recreationThe University has an impressive range ofindoor and outdoor sporting facilities, includingaerobic conditioning and weights rooms, indoorand outdoor tennis courts, squash courts, amartial arts dojo, and an organised programmeof classes for all levels of fitness and fun. TheAthletic Union runs over 65 sports clubs thatstudents can join, and beginners are alwayswelcome.

As one of the UK’s major sporting centres,Cardiff offers an outstanding range of facilitiesand events for the most avid of sports fans. TheMillennium Stadium hosts world-class footballmatches as well as international rugby. It seats76,000 people, and the atmosphere in the cityon the day of a big game is certainly somethingto experience. International one-day and first-class cricket matches (including a recent AshesTest match) are played in the heart of the cityat the Swales Stadium. Cardiff even has its veryown baseball and ice hockey teams!

Day trips and excursionsThe countryside surrounding Cardiff offersmagnificent scenery and opportunities for allkinds of outdoor activities, from hiking andsailing to horse riding and swimming. Whetheryou prefer towns or beaches, moors ormountains, weekends and holidays provide theperfect opportunity to take advantage of all thatSouth Wales – and the UK – has to offer.

At weekends and holidays, many students liketo take advantage of Cardiff’s excellent rail andbus services to explore the nearby coast andlocal countryside such as the beautiful GowerPeninsula or splendid Brecon BeaconMountains. It is also easy to visit populartourist destinations like London, Bath andStratford-upon-Avon. Low cost airlines operateout of Cardiff International Airport to manyEuropean destinations allowing you theopportunity to travel further afield if yourtimetable and budget allows.

The Students’ Union on campusThe focal point for most Cardiff Universitystudents is the Students’ Union which is one ofthe biggest, best and most active in Britain. Itprovides for all aspects of student life at theUniversity and offers several restaurants, cafésand fast-food outlets serving meals and snacksthroughout the day. There is also a bookshop, agames room and video arcade, pool andsnooker tables, banking services, a travelservice and satellite television. Students whostudy with us during the academic year(September to June) will also have a chance toparticipate in more than 200 cultural, political,religious, social and sporting societies.

1.How will the new UK Points Based System(PBS) visa application process affect me?The UK Government introduced a new visa andimmigration system on 31st March 2009. AsEnglish Language Programmes students you willneed a student visa to allow you to study in theUK. For the most up-to-date information aboutvisas please visit: www.cardiff.ac.uk/elt

Due to new immigration rules introduced in2009, we will be required to keep recordsof attendance.

2.How will I be taught and assessed?All language teaching takes place in groups of14 students or fewer. You will work from a coresyllabus, usually with a main coursebook, andmake use of authentic and commercialresources.

Your progress will be monitored by:

� A placement test and exit assessment testfor all courses.

� One-to-one tutorials with your tutor duringcourses of one term or longer.

� A progress report for courses of one termor longer.

3. Is there a deadline for applications?It is better to apply as early as possible to avoiddisappointment, but we can accept applicationsup until the end of August for the BridgeProgramme. Please note that under the newPBS visa regulations, it may take up to 28 daysto receive your visa, and therefore earlyapplications are strongly recommended.

4. Accommodation for couples or families?We usually recommend that students withfamilies choose private accommodation, asthere is a limited amount of Universityaccommodation for couples and families, andthere is usually a long waiting list. There aremany privately owned houses close to theUniversity which are available for students toshare (usually between 4 and 8 students perhouse).Our Residences office([email protected]) can provide lists ofaccommodation available. The average cost is£85 per week, but you may also have to paycouncil tax, electricity, gas and water bills.

5. How do I get to Cardiff?The English Language Programmes office isalways happy to advise students on travel toCardiff. We also provide detailed informationonline: www.cardiff.ac.uk/international/travel

6. Do you accept sponsored students?We are very happy to receive sponsoredstudents. Please send a sponsorship letter onheaded paper which confirms that the Englishlanguage tuition fees will be paid in full for thedates of the courses applied for.www.cardiff.ac.uk/elt

If you needadvice on choosing an appropriate course orcompleting the application form, please contactthe English Language Programmes office.

What happens next?Once a completed application form is receivedby our office, if you meet the entryrequirements for the course, we will send you:

� confirmation of your place on the courseand an Applicant Reply Slip

� a CAS letter which will only be sent to youafter you have accepted your offer to studywith the Applicant Reply Slip

� information in an email about travelling toCardiff and the University, youraccommodation and the first day ofyour course

The above items may be sent to you in stages.

Medical and travel insuranceWe strongly recommend that all studentstravelling to the United Kingdom take outadequate accident, medical and travel insurance.

Please Note: Students on courses of less thansix months will not be eligible for free NHSmedical treatment and therefore it is essentialthat private medical insurance is taken.

Booking conditionsAll students will be required, as a condition ofenrolment, to abide by and submit to theprocedures set out in this brochure as amendedfrom time to time. All students will receive acopy of this brochure at or before enrolment.

The University will use all reasonableendeavours to deliver courses in accordancewith the descriptions set out in this brochure.However, the University:
