Dear families & friends Thank you to the parents who provided transport for the 3/4 day at Kurth Kiln. A letter from the organiser praised the behaviour and persistence of the chil-dren and thanked the teachers and parents for their hard work in organising the event. We are indeed fortunate to have such a strong relationship with the Friends of Kurth Kiln group and welcome the opportunity to develop our care and respect for the wider Gembrook environment in such a practi-cal way. Well done to everyone involved. Drumming starts this week for all grades. There has been some excitement brewing around the school. In other instru-mental classes I know the drum has been a very popular item. This time it will be drums, drums, drums! For many students this will be a new experience. I am sure you will hear the re-sults of these lessons at home for the rest of the term.! Chaplain John Chambers, our school chaplain, is working in the class-rooms getting to know our students. He invites any parents who would like to meet with him for a chat, to arrange a time through me or the office. He will be here on Monday and Wednesday. PFA Soup Day The PFA team met recently and are organising a soup day. As always we will enjoy some delicious soups especially welcome now that Winter has well and truly arrived. A note will be coming home soon. School Nurse Visit for Foundation Every year a school nurse visits and screens our Foundation students. Miss Hutcheson has sent envelopes home to all Foundation students and they are now due. If yours did not make it home or has been mislaid please contact her for another. We need these forms returned for students to take advantage of this opportunity. Sick Children Attendance at school is very important, however we do not want sick children at school. To help contain infection from the illnesses currently going around school, it is very im-portant that families keep sick children at home. Many stu-dents are away with gastric sickness. This illness begins with a headache and progresses to nausea. If your child complains of a headache, please do not sent them to school. This illness is very contagious. Permission for Events Permission for events must be received by Tiqbiz or hard copy at school by the due date. Qkr is for payment only, not permission. If you pay for events using Qkr, permission must still be received by Tiqbiz or hard copy. EDEC Lightning Prem Our grade 5/6 students and some students from grade 4 en-joyed a great day of competition with other EDEC schools at

Worrell Reserve in Emerald today. Sports played include football, netball and volleyball. Well done everyone! Many thanks to all the parent helpers and those who came along to support by cheering loudly. Special thanks to Bron Koll and Mark Gerencser for putting a lot of time and effort into train-

ing the netball and football teams respec-tively.

Cancer Fact: Brain cancer is the most common form of tumours in children. Cancer Fact: Each

year more than 620 children in Australia are diagnosed with cancer.

White Eye Patch Day is an awareness day for CBC (Childhood Brain Cancer). The day is run by

Crusade for Cancer which is the same charity that runs Pirate Day Friday. It takes place on

the second Friday in June which this year is the 12th. The day aims to eventually have over 1

million people across the world wear an eye patch for Children who are currently diagnosed

with Brain Cancer.

The Eye Patch is symbolic for the brain damage that often occurs in children who have brain

tumours removed. Conor Colgan (the little boy who inspired the day) has partial paralysis in his

face including the loss of the ability to blink with his right eye. An Australian young lady named

Chloe, spoke on BTN (Behind The News) about her own experiences and asked for support to

raise the awareness of this type of cancer. The video Chloe made inspired the senior SRC reps

to ask that Gembrook Primary School become part of the fund raising support for research

into the prevention and cure of CBC.

Chaplaincy Program

The aim of the National School Chaplaincy Program is to support the emotional wellbeing of students by providing pastoral care services and strategies that support the emotional wellbeing of the broader school community.

Introducing: Gembrook Primary Schools new chaplain, John Chambers I would like to thank the staff and students from Gembrook Primary for making me feel so welcome. If you’d like me to catch up with your son or daughter at school, permission forms can be found at the front desk. Of course, I am also available for a chat with parents too. We have been looking at monsters in art. We studied and discussed Danish post-it-note

artist John Kenn Mortensen and looked at monster like creatures in Surrealist art. This week

we have made sculpture monsters with clay and learnt how to correctly join pieces of clay so

it does not fall apart. We also showed the texture of our monsters fur, feathers, wrinkly and

saggy skin.

Help Decide The Future of the Gembrook Township Committee

If you have ever possessed the slightest notion that perhaps your input and ideas could

benefit the community of Gembrook, then now is the time to become involved. The

unfortunate reality is that without your assistance, there may not be another opportunity.

The Gembrook Township Committee will be holding a meeting at the Community Centre on

Tuesday the 9th of June 2015, commencing at 7.30pm. We need you to be there as this

meeting may well decide the immediate future of the volunteers who make up the group.

At present, the committee operates as a Section 86 committee, meaning that it is essentially

empowered as a sub-committee accountable to the Cardinia Shire Council. There has been

much discussion of late as to whether continuation under that format is viable.

Suggestions have been made as to alternate options available to the group. It is conceivable

that the formation of an Incorporated Association could replace the current committee.

Another option exists whereby the committee would reform under the auspice of another

association, such as the Eastern Dandenong Ranges Association (E.D.R.A)

The aim of the meeting on the 9th of June is to explore all available options. Representatives

from various township associations, including E.D.R.A. will address the gathering to assist those

present in deciding upon the most advantageous course of action for the Gembrook Township

Committee to adopt.

So that’s why your input into that decision is so important.

Now is your opportunity to become involved, even if you have never attended a previous

meeting. New residents with fresh ideas and innovative concepts are always welcome.

There is no good to be gained from reminiscing upon your great idea after the opportunity to

pursue it has passed you by. Unless a future direction can be identified for the Gembrook

Township Committee, that may well be the case.

Help us advocate and engage with the issues that concern you as a community.
