• Fertilize your lawn in the fall based on the soil sample results and follow the University of Maryland’s recommendations.

• Mow the lawn tall, 3-4 inches. Taller grass shades the soil better, preserving natural moisture and inhibiting weed germination.

• Leave the clippings on the lawn, they create organic matter. Organic matter absorbs and retains moisture in the soil like a sponge.

• Keep the lawnmower blade sharp. This cuts the blades of grass clean instead of ragged, reducing moisture loss after mowing.

• Over-seed in September with drought-tolerant grass seed. • And finally, don’t use pesticides. They kill the worms that aerate and fertilize the soil.

ReImagine Long Reach Village Center Howard County Executive Allan H. Kittleman, along with the Long Reach VillageBoard, has scheduled meetings to seek input from residents about the revitalization of the Long Reach Village Center. Additional sessions will be held from 7-9pm at Stonehouse in the Village Center on June 11 and September 17. Howard County Government acquired the majority of the Village Center property in October 2014 and purchased the former Safeway site in February 2015. Columbia Association hosting annual KidsDay party at Columbia SportsPark on

June 6

KidsDay, the fun, annual welcome-to-summer event designed

for kids and hosted by Columbia Association (CA), returns on

Saturday, June 6, with a party from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Columbia SportsPark.

KidsDay is open to the public; there’s no need to sign up. Just

show up and enjoy a day of super-fun activities at Columbia SportsPark, 5453 Harpers Farm Road toward the back of the

Harper’s Choice Village Center. KidsDay is sponsored by Greenberries.

Mini-golf and all-you-can-hit batting cages will be free for all kids ages 13 and younger: those 14 and up can pay $5 for one activity or $7 total for both. There will also be numerous fun offerings available and

free to all, including arts and crafts, a moon bounce, Zumba® for kids, face painting, animal balloons,

dance music, a photo booth, and a variety of games and structured activities. While you and your family are having fun, learn more about CA’s great youth programs, classes, camps and special offers.

Concessions will be available for purchase, including food, beverages, snacks and ice cream. Door

prizes will also be held during KidsDay.

CA’s Lakefront Wednesdays Lunchtime Concert Series

Columbia Association’s (CA) free weekly Lakefront Wednesdays Lunchtime Concert Series begins

June 17 with the first of nine performances at Lake Kittamaqundi in Downtown Columbia.

The concerts are held every Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m.

This year’s schedule of performers includes:
