General
FROSCO Oil Interceptor works on the principle that oils are lighter than water and thusgravity causes the oil to rise and the water to fall. It is designed to separate oils and otherlight density volatile liquids which are discharged into the drainage system.
In commercial establishments, the spillages of oil or diesel could occur such as garages,transport workshops, diesel re-fueling and storage areas, and where vehicles or plant arewashed down or steam cleaned.
Function
The direct and indirect discharge of oily waste water into the natural waterways has adisastrous impact on the environment.
The installation of FROSCO Oil Interceptor in drain lines will help to prevent the pollution ofrivers, streams, drainage system and water treatment plants.
Mechanical Operation of FROSCO Oil Interceptor1. Perforated Bucket Baffles Assembly
When the influent entering the interceptor, the perforated bucket baffle assemblywill trap and collect chips, particles or other sediment which are frequently presentin industrial waste and could clog the drainage system.
2. Baffles AssemblyIt will help to minimize the velocity and turbulence of the incoming waste water andpermit the oil efficiently separate and rise above the normal establishes water line ofthe interceptor.
3. Deep Seal Integral TrapThe trap is to avoid the floating oil in the interceptor being escaped out into outletdrain lines.
4. Gravity Oil Drain-off AssemblyBy automatic or manual means, the floating oil flows through an adjustable draw-offpoint to a sump or a similar storage container awaiting disposal. Please refer to‘Collection of floating oil’ column for other means of oil collection.
5. Interceptor VentsTo eliminate pressure build-up inside the interceptor, a connection on each side of theinterceptor body allows the venting of the interceptor.

The design allows the introduction of any type of liquids for separation so long as there issufficient specific gravity differential to allow gravity separation.
It is must complete with baffle screen, sediment bucket and deep seal integral trap, toeffectively intercept and separate the oil from water. It achieves an average of about 99% ofoil removal for intermittent and variable flows of water, oil or any combination of non-emulsified oil / water mixtures when the hydraulic retention time (HRT) is ≥ 5 minutes.
The design must also complete with oil ‘draw off’ for channeling and separating oil to aseparate oil storage tank pending for periodic maintenance disposal.

Correct sizing of oil interceptor is important and crucial :
1. It avoids under-utilization due to excessive over-sizing.2. It avoids backflow of oily waste water due to under-sizing.3. It ensures adequate hydraulic retention time of oily waste water in the interceptor, to achieves
optimum separation of oil from water, and thus the maximum % of interception of oil.
Steps to size FROSCO Oil Interceptor :
1. Estimate the peak volume of waste water [see note i] either in liters/sec. Or Gallon/min.2. Select the oil interceptor model with flow rating equal to peak volume.3. Provide storage tank [see note ii] size sufficient to accommodate the volumes of liquids to be
having the anticipated frequency of removal.

(A) Sizing Method[Note i] To estimate the peak volume of waste water
(1) Covered AreaPeak Flowrate : Total of hose outlets, equipments etc that continuous discharging to drain line at one
timeExample: (Waste water from washing sinks)
Sink size : 40cm x 30cm x 15cm = 18,000cc = 18 Liters
To fill up the sink with full water, and discharge it, and to check the time taken to fully discharge the water. Itis recorded the time taken is about 30 seconds. Thus, the flowrate is 18 liters/ 30 sec = 8GPM
(2) Open area (uncovered)Peak Flowrate : Total area (length(meter) x Width(meter) x Rainfalls (mm/sec.)
Example: Length = 20 meter, Width=10 meter, Rainfall = 50 mm/hourTherefore, Peak Flowrate = 20 x 10 x 50/3600 = 2.78 liters/sec.
(B) Sizing for Oil Storage Tank
[Note ii] Sizing for Oil Storage Tank1. To estimate the volume of oil into the interceptor2. Frequency of maintenance routine (once a month, twice a month, etc)3. Size the oil storage tank double the size of the total accumulated oil during the period (50% of oil
+ 50% of water) to cater for the requirements.
Example : An average of 5 liters daily of black oil is spilled and washed away into the drain lines. Assumingthat the contractor (licensed by DOE) is schedule to come and collect the waste black oil once amonths. The total black oil accumulated in 30 days time is about 150 liters. The capacity for oilstorage should be double = 300 liters.
Note : The above sizing methods are just a guideline only. In order to achieve better affluent waterrange, kindly refer to the manufacturer/supplier for further advise.

1. Normally used in automatic installation with drawn-off oil collecting in storage tank. Thissetting will retain a layer of oil in the interceptor
2. If during the normal working condition, water is found entering the draw-off, adjust draw-offupward from 1/8” to ¼”.
Ensure that ALL OIL is removed from interceptor
1. Normally used with manual draw-off installation. This setting will allow water to enter thedraw-off line.
2. If during the normal working condition, oil is found to be remaining in the interceptor :• For manual installation : Draw-off oil more frequently and or lower draw- off by
another 1/8”.• For automatic installation : Lower draw-off by another 1/8”.

FROSCO Oil Interceptor system has been tested by SIRIM (SIRIM ref. no : 237/16/119).According to the test result, FROSCO Oil Interceptor achieves 99% oil removal when thehydraulic retention time (HRT) is about 5 minutes. It concludes that FROSCO Oil Interceptor canbe seen as a pretreatment system that can help reduce the negative impact to theenvironment.
COLLECTION OF FLOATING OIL FROM FROSCO OIL INTERCEPTOR

1” Wide Belt Skimmers for Use With Metalworking COOLANTS and Wastewater Applications
Many Thousands of Mini-SkimmersTM have been used throughout theworld since 1990 for removing tramp oils from coolants andwastewaters. There are choices of polyurethane belt – cog type on MSB& lower cost Flat Type on Model DBS, with five choices on standard“reach” lengths & two oil collection rates. 1. To fill up the FROSCO Oil Interceptor with clean water, free of oil, dirt or othercontaminants when it is properly installed.
2. The amount of debris such as sand, gravel, dirt, leaves, grass cutting, etc, permittedto enter the system must be minimized. Sediment bucket should be inspected andcleaned on daily/ weekly / biweekly basis depending on the incoming volume.
3. The floating oil (oil trapped) in the interceptor should be cleaned on daily/ weekly /biweekly basis depending on the incoming volume.
a) Manual Scoop (Method I)To scoop the floating oil manually on regular basis.
b) Oil Storage Tank (Method II)Refer to column on the oil storage tank application.
c) Oil Skimmer (Method III)Oil Skimmer is pre-set to run on daily / weekly basis for certain time duration(depend on oil content) to skim up the floating oil and channel it to aseparate oil container awaiting for disposal.
Operating Manual
To assure maximum effectiveness of the system, certain precautions should be observed.1. The amount of debris such as sand, gravel, dirt, leaves, grass cuttings, etc., permitted
to enter the system must be minimized. Perforated bucket of the sediment trapbefore the interceptor should be inspected and cleaned on a regular basis.
1. Automotive and truck engine crankcase oil should not be drained into the systemsludge and deposits present in the oil will significantly reduce the effectiveness ofthe interceptor.
1. Hydrocarbons entering the separator will be in a free non-emulsified state andcapable of being separated from water in a gravity separator.
1. Detergents have a definite affinity for hydrocarbons. Wash water from truck washingracks must be routed directly to a sanitary sewer or treated with special equipment.Water containing detergents must not be allowed to enter the system, unless thedetergents is biodegradable.
1. Water flow rates are within the specification. Adequate water retention time willensure proper separation of oil/ water mixture.
A flow controller is advisable to install at the upstream of the unit to ensure no accidentaldischarge of oil during periods of excessive wastewater flow.

SEWAGE AND INDUSTRIAL EFFLUENTS REGULATIONS
First ScheduleList of discharge to which these regulations do not apply :
1) Processing of oil-palm fresh fruit bunches into crude palm oil, whether as an intermediate or final product.2) Processing of natural rubber in technically specified from latex form including prevulcanized or the form of
modified and special purpose rubber, conventional sheet, skim, crepe or scrap rubber.3) Mining activities.4) Processing manufacturing, washing or servicing of any other products or goods :
• That produce effluent of less than 60 cubic meter ( 13,000 imperial gallons ) per day,• That the effluent of which does not contain those contaminants listed as parameters (vi) to (xvi) in the first
column of the Third Schedule,• Where the total load of biochemical oxygen demand of the effluent fixed at 20 degree Centigrade for 5 days
or suspended solid or both, shall not exceed 6 kilograms per day ( concentration 100 milligrams per liter),• In any housing or commercial development or both of less than 30 units, without affecting the generality of

Existing sewage treatment system (approved after January 1999)All sewerage treatment system which were approved after the Guidelines for Developers : SewerageTreatment Vol. IV, 2nd edition and were enforced by Department of Sewerage Services, Ministry of Housingand Local Government, beginning January 1999 and up to the date of coming into operation of theseregulations.
Note :Standard A is applicable to discharge into any inland waters within catchment areas listed in the ThirdSchedule, while Standard B is applicable to any other inland waters or Malaysian waters.
