Principal’s Reflections Classes and Friendship Groups for 2018 The children are currently being asked to choose a number of students who they would like to see in their 2018 class as part of a friendship group and whom they work well with. No guarantees can be given but where possible accommodations will be made. Please be assured that our teachers work extremely hard each year compiling class lists with dedicated stage meetings scheduled and deep professional discussions undertaken across the stage. Teachers spend a lot of time and consider many factors to ensure the students are matched according to their individual needs. At the end of the day, we need our students to be resilient with the placements made by our teachers. Resilience is one of our core values and a skill for life in an ever increasingly complex and inter-connected world. Correct Coloured School Shoes and Laces Please Our school is a uniform school, with a unique uniform we can all be justly proud of. Recently however, a number of students have been wearing various coloured shoes to school. Our official shoe colour is black with white permitted on sports day and PE class days. School shoes are to be black leather shoes/black joggers with black only shoes laces. Canvas black shoes are not accepted as they do not provide the correct support for growing feet. White shoes with white laces for sporting / PE days are OK. I realise we are “in the home stretch” with the 2017 school year and that young feet have grown, but please be aware. Black shoes for 2018. Please consider this purchase as a Christmas present or stocking filler! Reviewed "Good Discipline and Effective Learning Policy" (November 2017). Sections covered are;

I would like to personally thank Mr Naylor and our School Council for their input with this major document for our school and community. A copy of this document is available on our school website.

Call Out to Grandparents to Join our P&C Please let all grandparents know that they are most welcome as community members to attend and to get involved in our fantastic P&C. Often these wonderful citizens are an underutilised resource with a wealth of talents and experiences to offer. Please extend this invitation to our grandparents. AGM P&C The Annual General meeting (AGM) of our P&C will take place on Tuesday 12th December at 7pm. Everyone welcome . Yours in public education

2018 Swimming Carnival for Zone Selection

A note has gone home today for the 2018 swimming Carnival. If your child is a confident swimmer and is

able to swim 50m, fill out the note and return it to your class teacher. (Not the office.)

All swimming carnival notes must be returned by Thursday, 7 December, 2017. After this return date your

child will be placed on a waiting list.

The Carnival is for competitive swimmers ONLY who are able to confidently swim 50m.

Funky Friday

A big thank you to all students involved in Funky Friday over the past five weeks. This has been a major

fundraising activity for the Year 6 Farewell.

Enrolment Day – Tuesday 5 December Lambton High School will have their official Enrolment Day on Tuesday 5 December. Students that have been accepted at Lambton High School for 2018 should have received a letter outlining the plan of the day. Parents/carers need to organise transport to and from Lambton High School on this day. Merewether High School, Callaghan College Wallsend Campus, Hunter School of Performing Arts and Glendale Technology High School are also holding their Enrolment day on this day. Please contact the school for more information if required. Year 6 Farewell Meeting Tuesday 28 November there will be a Year 6 Farewell meeting at 5.30pm in 6N. This will be our final major meeting before the Farewell on Monday 11 December.

LIBRARY NEWS

It’s time to return all your books.

Library borrowing has finished for the year but library lessons continue. We ask all students to return their borrowed books during their lessons this week as we prepare the library for our end of year clean up. Overdue notices (books that have not been returned after the standard 2 week loan period) are being sent home this week. Please ensure that children return these identified overdue books, or the cost of replacing the item, to the library as soon as possible.

Book Club orders will be coming home this week. If there is a problem with your order please see Mrs Lovat or Mrs Chapman as soon as possible so it can be resolved.

Thank you,

Library Teachers

Values in Action

In our last few weeks of the school year, we are continuing with the value of Integrity. We emphasize to the

students the idea that integrity is essential to being fully human and happy and that it is a kind of ‘glue’ that

holds us, our families and friendships, and our world together. With it, we can be happy; without it, we can

fall apart. We talk about being true to ourselves; doing what we know is right even though we are not being

watched. We give lots of examples of people in history who have acted with integrity, who have stood up for

what they believed, even if it came at a cost. We have said of each of the values that they are the ‘rock

bottom’ one, as though all the values are interwoven with each other. We could certainly say that of

integrity. The person with integrity will be living out all the values we have spoken about, respect, care,

acceptance, fairness, responsibility, etc. Again, a good way to think about it is by going back to its Latin

root and the way it is used in maths. It’s the whole number, be it referring to a numeral in maths, a person,

a family, a friendship group, a nation or a world. – Mrs Lovat

‘Integrity means that you are the same in public as you are in private’ – Joyce Meyer

CAMBODIAN CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE 2017 Our challenge to support our Cambodian school students this Christmas continues. In the past three weeks twenty-one of our 177 Cambodian students have been sponsored by Wallsend South families. Their $50 sponsorship will save one of our students from malnutrition by providing one meal whilst at school, which satisfies the daily requirements as set by the World Health Organisation. It will also provide the child with a school uniform and put a pair of shoes on their feet. A big thank you to this week's sponsors:

Talia, Reuban and Harper Smith Thank you to Talia, Reuban and Harper Smith who have also purchased a water filter for a family in our village. Classes have started a Cambodian Piggy Bank Challenge from this week, which will be continuing through to the end of term. Please see below for further information. If you have misplaced the note and would like to help with this project, please send your $50 sponsorship donation to the school office and include your name, a current email address and the name to be attached to the sponsorship (e.g. “The ___ Family”). Any cheques should be made out to ‘Jan Holbert’. If your family or your organisation would like to support our village on a larger scale, please refer to the note or contact Mrs Moloney on [email protected] . Thank you for your support. Class Cambodian "Piggy Bank" Challenge With only 3 weeks until the end of the school year, and lots of Romdoul children still to support, we have embarked on a class challenge to help with our venture. Each class will be collecting change in the hope of sponsoring at least one child per group. For every $50 raised one child in our Cambodian school, Romdoul, will receive a school uniform, a pair of shoes and one hot meal every day for a year. If this means of helping with our sponsorship drive is of interest to your family, we would greatly appreciate any contributions to class piggy banks. So far our top fundraisers are: 1. KK - $65.00 2. 3M $40.05

Page 5: Email: wallsends-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au Follow us on ... · Student Attendance. ... Year 6 Farewell Meeting Tuesday 28 November there will be a Year 6 Farewell meeting at 5.30pm

3. 6M $38.25 4. 1J $32.75 5. 4H $30.75 As a school we have raised $311.20 in our first week of the Piggy Bank Challenge. This means that 6 children have been sponsored with our small change. Hopefully we will be able to change more lives of some children less fortunate than ours this Christmas. Thank you for your support. Mrs Moloney Freddo Friday - Friday 1st December 3M will be holding a fundraiser on this Friday, 1st December. Giant Freddo Frogs will be for sale outside the canteen at recess and lunch time. We will have Caramello Koalas, and a range of flavoured Freddo Frogs for sale. All chocolates will be $1 and all money goes toward sponsoring Cambodian children.

Celebration Night 2017

It is not long until Celebration Night. Just some reminders that may be useful.

Date: December 6

Location: The West City - cnr of King and Union Street Newcastle West. (This is the only venue large enough for our school).

Time: All children are required to be at the venue no later than 6.15pm. Please check any teacher’s notes that advise differently. Please be aware that road works, peak hour traffic and finding a parking spot may cause delays so ensure you have left plenty of time for travel. N.B. Auditoriums 1 and 2 will not be open until 6pm. Supervision of your children by you will be needed until then.

Day Rehearsal:

A final rehearsal for students only will take place at Wests City Newcastle on Wednesday 6th December during the school day. Permission notes for this event are included in this week’s Tallong. There is no cost for the bus as this cost was built into the fees paid earlier this term. Children with medical needs will need to provide details. Please read the rehearsal permission note carefully. All children need to return the permission note for bus travel by Friday 1 December. Please return notes to your child’s class teacher.

Night Performance:

The first event of the evening will be the Band playing in the foyer. This will begin at 5.40pm. If your child is part of the Band, please refer to the note from Mrs Moloney regarding arrival time.

After the Band has performed, the Choir will be singing inside Auditorium 1 from 6.05pm. A five minute rolling photo montage will be shown at 6.15pm allowing ample time for you to take your seats by 6.30pm. Please feel free to make your way in to the auditorium any time from 6pm.

Time: The performance begins at 6.30pm sharp and the doors will be closed from that time onwards. The evening should conclude around 8.40pm.

Entry and Seating: This is by ticket only, purchased from P & C, but as this is a licensed club you will need to sign in and show your driver’s license / ID. Any toddlers are expected to sit on their parents’ lap. Please allow time for this as lines can get very long. The map for seating will be sent home in Week 9.

Children Drop Off: Please take Years K, 1 and 2 to Auditorium 2 (holding room) and Years 3-6 to Auditorium 1 no earlier than 6pm and no later than 6.15pm.

Order of Events: All children from every grade from K-6 will be on stage at some time, starting with Kindergarten and moving in order through to Year 6. Each grade will perform and then remain on stage for

Page 6: Email: wallsends-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au Follow us on ... · Student Attendance. ... Year 6 Farewell Meeting Tuesday 28 November there will be a Year 6 Farewell meeting at 5.30pm

the class awards to be presented after which they will then return to their seats. Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 will return to the holding room.

Awards: On the night, a number of children from each class in K - 6 will be recognised for their achievements. The amount of awards given will vary according to class numbers. We will also announce School Leaders, House Captains and Sporting Blues (those children who have represented Hunter Region at State Carnivals). Major Awards will also be presented to Year 6 at the end of the evening.

Early Leave: If you would like to take your young children home early, there will be an opportunity for Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 to be collected early from Auditorium 2 (holding room) following the presentation of the new school leaders at the end of Year 2 awards. Please note that once you have left, you will not be able to return with your child, owing to seating restrictions. No school child can be seated on your lap.

Conclusion: At the end of the night, Mrs Lovat will announce collection spots for each grade. Please pick your child up from this spot and ensure that you notify their teacher once you have collected them.

Security will not allow FOOD or ALCOHOL IN THE AUDITORIUM or allow people to stand at the rear of the auditorium, with or without strollers.

POSITION VACANT - Our P&C is looking for a new Auditor

We would like to thank our current Auditor, a mum at our school, for her time and effort in completing our P &C Association’s audit for the last financial year.

We are now seeking the services of a new Auditor to review our records and financial statements for the financial year ending 30 June 2018.

When - Although we do not require any services to be rendered until late in 2018 we need to appoint the new Auditor at our AGM on 12 December 2017. We are therefore seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified parents, grandparents or friends of our school interested in filling this open position.

Remuneration - Historically the position of auditor is an unpaid position and we are hoping that this will continue so that our fundraising is not spent on administration and can be donated to Wallsend South Public School for purchase of resources.

Qualifications - The auditor does not need to be a qualified professional. The auditor must possess appropriate skills and experience in auditing and financial record management together with an appreciation of the issues of probity as they relate to the role of association auditor. The auditor must not have or appear to have any conflict of interest arising, for example, from a personal or business relationship with an Officer of the Association and must be prepared to swear that the records are a true and correct statement of the information provided by the Treasurer.

If you are interested in assisting our P&C Association fill this position or would like further information on the

scope of the engagement, please do not hesitate to contact our P&C Treasurer, Mrs Tracey Mahoney at

[email protected] or phone 0430 789 286.
