Abstract

This paper presents a single phase smart energy meter based on embedded

systems which operates on ultra-low power. This smart energy meter does not have

any mechanical rotating parts that are seen in most of the existing domestic energymeters. The measurement and calculation of the energy consumption is done by the

IC: CS5480, which is a 24-bit, ultra low power consuming, high precision with

serial communication IC.

The IC incorporates different methods and schemes of signal conditioning to

obtain a noise free data. The IC includes Pre-Gain Amplifier, 4th

Order Delta-

Sigma Modulator, Digital Filters - sinc3,

IIR Filters, High Pass Filters, Decimation

Filters for each of the three analog channels. This IC communicates with the

powerful micro-controller (Renesas RL78/I1B). The communication is done

through the UART channel, wherein, the parameters measured by the EnergyMeter IC are accessed in the Micro-controller.

A custom LCD is used to display the measured parameters. The Micro-

controller has 2 other UART channels. One, which can be used to communicate to

GSM Module for power consumption supervision and sending real-time SMS to

user and two, PC data logging of the overall energy consumption.

This project uses a transformerless power supply to achieve low cost and

low power consumption, RTC, battery back-up function and on-chip temperature

measurement.
