in every country [1]. Electric energy is a vital resource in everyday life and a backbone of every industry. As electricity is limited resource its proper use and measurement is very important. In Conventional metering system to measure power consumption the energy provider company hire persons who visit each house and record the meter reading manually. These meter readings are used for electricity bill calculation and this bill sent to consumer house by post. This makes the system sluggish and laborious [2][3]. The human error can open an opportunity for corruption due to human interventions. So, the problems arise in the billing systems which make them inaccurate and inefficient. The availability of wireless communication media has made the exchange of information fast, secured and accurate. Communication media like the internet, GSM networks, etc. exists everywhere. Wireless meter reading puts more control into the hands of both utilities and consumers by giving them more detailed information about power consumption. This allows utilities to better regulate the power supply. So, remote & wireless meter reading system with prepaid technique is becoming a trend now. Meters can be manipulated to make them under-register, effectively allowing power use without paying for it. This theft or fraud can be dangerous as well as dishonest [3]. Power companies often install remote-reporting meters specifically to enable remote detection of tampering, and specifically to discover energy theft. The change to smart power meters is useful to stop energy theft. A common method of tampering on mechanical disk meters is to attach magnets to the outside of the meter. Strong magnets saturate the magnetic fields in the meter so that the motor portion of a mechanical meter does not operate. Lower power magnets can add to the drag resistance of the internal disk resistance magnets . Magnets can also saturate current transformers or potential transformers in electronic meters, though countermeasures are common. Different nontechnical and technical methods were proposed in the past to detect electricity pilfering.
2. EXISTING SYSTEM The present system only provides feedback to the customer at the end of the month that how much power is consumed in the form of bill. The consumer has no way to track their energy usage on a more immediate basis. The consumers are growing exponentially fast and load on power providing divisions is rapidly rising. In the existing system meter tampering can be done easily and it’s one of the major drawback for an energy crisis. In existing system either an electronic energy meter or an electro-mechanical meter is fixed in the premise for measuring the usage. The meters currently in use are only capable of recording kWh units. The kWh units used then still have to be recorded by meter readers monthly, on foot. The recorded data need to be processed by a meter reading company. For processing the meter reading, company needs to firstly link each recorded power usage datum to an account holder and then determine the amount owed by means of the specific tariff in use.
3. PROPOSED SYSTEM In Proposed system, we are using an advance smart energy meter where it easily finds the usage of electricity and detects the illegal usage of power theft. Smart (Prepaid) Energy Meter has been proposed as an innovative solution aimed at facilitating affordability and reducing the cost of utilities. This mechanism, essentially, requires the users to pay for the electricity before its consumption. In this way, consumers hold credit and then use the electricity until the credit is exhausted. If the available credit is exhausted then the electricity supply is cut-off by a relay. Apart from making readings using GSM communication, billing system is needed to be made prepaid to avoid unnecessary usage of power.

The GSM modem is serially connected with the controller which is the major communication module between User and provider. TGSM uses its own network for the transfer of information. Special coding in embedded c is used for programming PIC microcontroller using programmer Hardware along with MPIDE software. The relay acts as switching device to cut off and restore power LCD is interfaced to microcontroller using parallel port connection. In this Microcontroller based system continuously records the readings and the live meter reading can be sent to the Electricity department on request. This systedisconnect the power supply to the house in case of nondedicated GSM modem with SIM card is required for each energy meter. The microcontroller pulls the SMS received by phone, decodes it, recognizes tthe relays attached to its port to control the appliances. After successful operation, controller sends back the acknowledgement to the user’s mobile through SMS. This module will reduce the burden of energy providing by establishing the connection easily and no theft of power will take place. Distortion of the electric current by loads is measured in several ways. Power factor is the ratio of resistive (or real power) to volt-amperes. A capacitive load has a leading power factor, and an inductive load has a lagging power factor. A purely resistive load (such as a filament lamp, heater or kettle) exhibits a power factor of 1. Current harmonics are a measure of distortion of the wave form. For example, electronic loads such as computer power supplies draw their current at the voltage peak to fill their internal storage elements. This can lead to a significant voltage drop near the supply voltage peak which shows as a flattening of the voltage waveform. This flattening causes odd harmonics which are not permissible if they exceed specific limits, as they are not only wasteful, but may interfere with the operation of other equipment. Harmonic emissions are mandated by law in EU and other countries to fall within specified limits.
7. CONCLUSIONS Here we have a low-cost solution for the real-time energy management. It provides several energy meters that continuously monitor connected loads communicating with Micro controller via wireless. The proposed Smart Meter network can be easily installed in a home and in industries with the possibility to monitoring the various loads. Detecting a fault in distribution system can be done by communicating between the distribution transformer and the consumer’s energy meter. If there is supply in the transformer and no supply in the consumers end it means that there is a line fault between the consumer and the distribution transformer.
