DESCRIPTION

Knowledge is not only in the mind, but also in the body. We use our physique to manipulate and understand our environment. What this means in the area of interaction design is that the human body, environment and context has lots of influence in the experience with devices and digital systems. Through the manipulation of real-world objects, interaction with these systems can be more adapted to our behavior. This way, interaction takes place in the physical world instead through the use of abstract and complicated interfaces. The goal of my project was to explore the concept of embodied interaction. In layman's terms, this theory is about extending technology to human behavior in a most natural way. I applied this concept in practice by designing an experimental remote for the television set-up. This remote has no buttons and the user controls the television by squeezing and gesturing. The remote communicates to the user through the use of haptic feedback. The process of developing EmboRemo was an important aspect in my project. I applied ideation, prototyping, user testing and different forms of research. This was my graduation project for the study Interaction Design at the School of the Arts Utrecht (HKU), the Netherlands.

embodied interaction

how our engagement, perception, and situatedness in the world influences how we interact with computational artifacts.
