DESCRIPTION:

This preserve is located on the western slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains overlooking Half Moon Bay. The centerpiece of this 4,711-acre preserve is Purisima Creek Canyon, home to towering redwoods. The preserve includes 24 miles of developed trails and historical logging roads, which provide opportunities for easy walks or long, strenuous hikes or anything in between. Guests can enjoy a quick glimpse of the magnificent Coastal Redwoods or take a full day to hike to the top of the preserve with views of the Pacific Ocean on a loop trail.

Pillar Point Bluff offers some of the most majestic ocean views in Half Moon Bay. Sheer cliffs tower over white sands and the rocky reefs of the southern fringe of the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve below. Atop the bluff, enjoy an array of coastal scrub and spring time wildflowers, making homes for unique coastal wildlife. Hovering birdlife can be seen including: Red-Tailed Hawks, Brown Pelicans, American Kestrels, and White-Tailed Kites.In the winter months, keep your gaze toward the waves, you may get a chance to see the world famous Mavericks big wave surf spot breaking. These powerful waves can sometimes reach heights of up to 60 feet and challenge some of the best big wave surfers in the world during the annual Titans of Maverick’s surf contest.

DESCRIPTION:

With an elevation of more than 1,800 feet, on a clear day it feels as if you can see forever. On a foggy day, guests will literally be above the clouds. With crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean just at the foot of Montara Mountain, this is definitely the place to be for sweeping views of the beautiful coast side. Allow guests four to five hours to reach the summit and complete the descent down. If short on time, the Grey Whale Cove trail is popular and offers views of the coast below with a relatively flat traverse.

DESCRIPTION:

This site of the current Fitzgerald Marine Reserve was originally settled by Native Americans (the Ohlone Tribe) approximately 5,800 years ago. In 1908, the Ocean Shore Railroad extended through the town of Moss Beach, effectively creating this location as a tourist destination. Remains of the foundation and some original landscape features from the Smith-Doegler home site from the early-1900s may be found on the bluffs overlooking the Reserve.

The site has long been a source of research and materials for marine biologists and collectors, so much so that, in 1969, San Mateo County urged the State of California to designate the site as a state reserve to protect the remaining flora and fauna. On August 5, 1969 the site was officially designated as a state reserve.

Embrace one of California’s unique pastimes by learning to surf at Pacifica’s famous Linda Mar Beach or Surfer’s Beach in Half Moon Bay. Instructors will ensure everyone has a fun time and push each surfer to catch their first wave.

Kayaking or Paddle Boarding are unique ways to enjoy the natural setting of the captivating coastal region of Half Moon Bay. Glide across the waters of Pillar Point Harbor while getting close to and observing harbor seals, marine birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat. Instructors provide a basic introduction of boating, paddling and safety skills before leading guests out onto the water

Experience riding a horse on the beach and be only feet from the Pacific Ocean, Sea Horse Ranch has just the ride for you. Ride along the trail that hugs the coast and offers spectacular views of not just the beach, but the California landscape and Princeton Harbor. Keep your eyes peeled for the variety of marine life frolicking in the waters, and don’t forget to look up and potentially spot a red-tailed hawk hovering in place as it searches for its next meal.

One of the tallest lighthouses in North America, the 118-foot Pigeon Point Lighthouse has guided mariners and impressed visitors from its beginnings in 1872. Though access to the top of the lighthouse is no longer allowed due to structural damage, the grounds are just as spectacular. Visitors not only get to experience a historic structure, but also enjoy the coastal areas surrounding Pigeon Point Light Station, which are rich with wild life. Marine mammals, such as seals and whales, can be seen regularly from shore as they pass by beyond the surf.

Harley Farms is a restored 1910 dairy, with 200 alpine goats on nine acres of pasture in Pescadero, California. The farm grew from six pet goats to today’s herd, producing their delicious, critically-acclaimed cheese. This informative tour takes us from pasture, to processing, to packaging. At the end of the tour, guests will be able to design a goat cheese ‘button’ round to enjoy when they return home.

The Beauregard family has been working the land in Bonny Doon, CA growing premium wine grapes since 1945. Four generations later, the estate’s vines now span 63 acres of Chardonnay, Piot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. As winemakers, it is their mission to produce wines that display the flavor of the land and make wines that are true to their variety. The wines are simplistic in the sense that they reflect what they truly are. This is accomplished through old world winemaking techniques.

Get close to the majestic Grey whales as they migrate south to warmer waters on this fantastic cruise. Though actually black in color, the whales acquire their color with the help of barnacles attached to their skin, giving them a grey appearance. Boats depart from Princeton Harbor and venture 10 to 15 miles away from shore and toward the migratory paths of these majestic mammals. Whale season begins January and ends in October. Bring your binoculars and enjoy the sight of one of the world’s largest mammals.

During the remainder of the year, you are able to enjoy a quiet getaway, which provides scenic views, escaping the noise of everyday life and relax as the captain takes care of the controls. You will be able to cruise around the harbor and down the coast with picturesque views of Half Moon Bay.

Whale Watching Excursion-Ocean Cruise

DESCRIPTION:

Año Nuevo State Park lures visitors with its windswept dunes and fields of grass. But, idyllic scenery isn’t the only feature that draws over 200,000 nature enthusiasts per year. The Northern Elephant Seal calls Año Nuevo home during the mating, birthing and molting seasons, which allows visitors to view the large colony almost all year long. There are only two other known mating ground locations along the Pacific Ocean coastline. Peak season for Elephant Seal viewing is from mid-December through the end of March. A State Park docent accompanies groups during the high season and offers valuable insight as well as guidance.

Molting Season: April 1 – August 31 Northern elephant seals come ashore during the spring and summer months to shed their outer layer of skin and fur.

Fall Haul Out Season: September 1 – November 30 By summer’s end, most elephant seals have returned to sea to feed. Small numbers of one to three year old juveniles haul out on remote beaches as part of their early development.

Natural Preserve Closed: December 1-14 Pregnant females and adult males begin to arrive on the beaches and form harems. Visitor access is closed during this period.

Breeding Season and Walks: December 15 – March 31 Northern elephant seals come ashore to give birth and mate from early December through March. Bull seals engage in battles for breeding access to the females from early December through January.

Jam Class $135 per person-Duration: 3 Hours Enjoy a hands-on workshop by transforming fresh fruit into gourmet preserves. Learn the basic preserving process and how to repeat the protocol safely at home. Leave the class with a jar of jam that you help create. A minimum of 5 and a maximum of 12 guests can be accommodated.

Farm-to-Table Dinners $225 per person Enjoy a four-course family-style gourmet meal prepared by a local chef and local wines or beer. Dinner can accommodate a minimum of 25 and a maximum of 60 guests.
