Jim Campbell Final Departure With much sadness, we report the final departure for Jim Campbell. Jim passed away Monday evening, 14 January 2013. It was very unexpected.

Jim was feeling poorly Sunday afternoon and resisted going to ER but eventually relented. They found serious heart problems and Jim ended up with a quadruple bypass surgery Monday afternoon. It appeared all was well with Jim when he came out of surgery doing fine, but unfortunately his heart developed very low pressure after an hour into recovery and did not survive. Kathleen Myers was Jim’s significant other for seven wonderful years. Kathleen was totally shocked by how quickly things went so terribly, terribly wrong.

Jim was a very good friend. Always in a cheerful mood, eager to be helpful. Jim helped with many of the recent construction and clean‐up projects. Jim put a lot of effort into the third lobe with creating the oil distribution facility, cleaning the area of a ton of pine needles, rehabbing buildings, making roadway

sections out of some old roofing tiles from the Depot. You can still see his roadway work in the third and second lobes today. Jim also made some nice videos that are still on YouTube today. Jim had a video talent I did not realize.

Recently, Jim worked hard and managed to collect an M&M train for his niece. He even found the A‐B‐A diesel set (which I did not know existed). Jim put together a very nice M&M train.

Jim’s work at Hurlburt Field was shrouded in much national secrecy. So we do not know very much about what work he really did for the government. I do know that he frequently worked weekends in a SCIF (highly classified and secured facility) which did not allow cell phones. So he had to get outside back to the parking lot to make a phone call.

Jim’s departure leaves us with a big hole in our hearts. Jim will be greatly missed.

William Winne Final Departure

Friday, 8 Feb 2013, learned that William passed away about three weeks ago, about 18 January, from leukemia. Christina stated that he loved taking their two boys, Kaleb 12 and Jacob 7, to the club to run trains together. She plans to continue the tradition with the boys on Fridays as time allows. They moved here about a year and a half ago from Indiana. I met the family at a Messianic Sabbath service and invited them to the train club. They soon came by and

joined our club a few weeks later. Bill had already started treatments for the leukemia at that time and was making progress in combating the disease. Bill had been employed as a diesel mechanic before they moved to our area.

Christina Winne and sons Kaleb and Jacob We expect to see more of Christina, Kaleb and Jacob at the Jordan Lot. Bill Winne will be missed.

RR Museum Dues

It is that time of year again; everyone needs to renew their RR Museum dues for 2013.

Just $30 for the year and with the loss of both the Hoot-N-Holler Bingo and Bingo Magic parlors income, your dues are even more needed.

The Club dues ($35) are due on the anniversary of your joining the Club.

Those who have paid already, thank you very much from the Museum Board and Treasurer.

Christmas Luncheon

The Christmas Luncheon was held Saturday, Noon on 15 December 2012. Stephanie Carrington was the coordinator, keeping track of who was coming and with what goodies. Lots of people helped with the Christmas Luncheon. It was great.

I got plenty of deviled eggs and bountiful portions of pumpkin pie. Thanks. Yum.

Lorene Fasnacht decorated the Diner, especially the tables, besides bringing mashed potatoes and gravy. Bill smoked a large 14 pound turkey and stripped that bird clean. Pat Stevens brought some deviled eggs, as did someone else that I lost track of. Frank brought

some key lime pie. Ethel and Ed Couturie brought some pumpkin pies. Mary Caraway provided chips and dips. Rodney Rich had some plates, cups and other things.

This list is very incomplete. There were many others. The

candied yams were great but I am not sure who fixed them up. Angie Gomez prepared green beans. Mike Stokes brought some sliced beef or ham and cheese.

Rodney Rich, new member from Panama City, donated a railroad car kit as the door prize. That was won by Ethel Couturie. Reports are it will be done in the color of pink. Thanks, Rodney. Congrats, Ethel.

We had a long list of Club members. Tried to run a list of folks, including the RR Museum folks. But, our list taker was asleep on the job or distracted by all of the activity and good food. Bottom line though, we had a bunch of folks. AND we had many RR Museum visitors stroll through and we talked up using the Diner for their events, like a family dinner or birthday party.

From my perspective, there was more food there than I could eat. I finished the leftovers I hauled home in my large cooler. I was stuffed and ready for a long winter’s nap.

President's Message : From the Club President, Jack Grill

A lot has happened in the past couple of months; some sad and some glad. We lost two of our members. We hardly

got to know Bill Winne as he joined just last July. It sounds like his wife and children will be regular visitors, though, so we will be able to enjoy their company. Jim Campbell had been with us for quite a while and we knew him well. We will think of him often as we enjoy the fruits of his labors in the tile roads he painted and striped and, of course, the Campbell Oil Company. I'm so glad he put his name on it.

Campbell Oil Co. built by Jim Campbell On the glad side of the emotional coin, we had a terrific Lionel Christmas. The attendance on the second Saturday was the highest for any event at the museum save for the centennial of the depot. The old warehouse was finally torn down. That building, while historically significant, was not restorable due to its dilapidated unsafe condition. While we are still waiting for the remaining pit to be filled in, the major impediment to removal of the third passenger car is now gone. That leads into the best news. Our new shed is finally finished. All of our "road show" items will soon be relocated there from their storage place of some years in that third car.

Keep in mind that our annual election of officers is coming up in April with nominations due at the March meeting. I would like to urge someone to volunteer to be secretary. Ed is doing a fine job, but I would like to see somebody else in that position as he already does more than his share of work around here. Ed is also the museum board secretary and acts as our unofficial caretaker as he spends more time at the layout than anyone else. Ed said he will continue to produce the calendar and the newsletter, so don't let that stop you from considering the position. Check the official requirements for secretary in the club bylaws which are on the club website. The hardest thing is that you must be able to write fast and read your own writing, which leaves me out by a long shot.

Lionel Christmas The WFRM held its annual Lionel Christmas this past

December. The weekends of 7‐8 and 14‐15

December were the primary events. This included

having the evening operations up to 8 PM on the

two Saturday evenings.

weekend after Thanksgiving inside the Freight

House, on the Bridge Tender's Building and at the

Jordan Lot.

Jordan Lot Garden Railroad. The lighted passenger

cars with detailed interiors showed up great as they

cruised around the tracks. Bill Carrington had his

very long Atlantic Coast Line passenger train. The

purple livery is always popular with folks. Ed Dice

included one of his ACL cars, too, for an added car

in the purple train. Orlando Gomez brought out his

very long Pennsylvania RR lighted passenger train in

its reddish‐brown livery. Frank Paine ran a pair of

old time Sierra coaches with added Christmas lights

and singing carolers. Did I hear singing on that

train?

visitors at the Jordan Lot. The Gate Kitty brought in

$519 to help keep the RR Museum and the Jordan

Lot Garden RR going. The extra effort to get a

reliable visitor count helps the RR Museum and

provides justification for the Santa Rosa County



Tourism Development Board (TDC) to provide

financial support with advertising flyers. Thanks to

those who stuck to it and kept counting the folks

coming into the Jordan Lot. It is boring but

important.

The Riding Train at the Jordan Lot was almost

constantly busy giving rides to the kids and kids‐at‐

heart.

Many other folks attended the operations at the

Jordan Lot but did not run trains. If anyone running

a train got missed, my apologies.

Jay Cotton Festival Ed Dice, Tom Augustine and Tom's son‐in‐law, Mike,

set up and staffed the RR Museum exhibit at the Jay

Cotton Festival and Christmas Parade Saturday, 24

Nov. That was the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It

was a good little event and was the third time that

the Jay historical group has done this festival.

Cotton was spread all over the area from the recent

and on‐going cotton harvesting. Bitter cold met us

early Saturday morning with a constant light wind.

Two small ovals of G scale trains were set up and

three different trains ran during the day. Tom set up

the RR Museum’s N scale layout and the info display

board with some pictures. Tom also set out the four

history books that Tom Moody authored.

Folks came to the festival area from all sides of the

venue. We were on the south side of the main

festival venue area and did get lots of folks walking

by into the festival and then back out again later on.

The Christmas parade went right by our location on

Spring St. towards the end of the Christmas parade

run.

We took a space of about 15’ deep by about 40’

long for the trains and display tables. Plus our two



vehicles parked close behind, which was great. We

had several classic cars park next to us, including

one motorcycle.

Visitor count was 513 for the RR Museum exhibit.

Coffee was hard to find though, but Tom was

successful there. Need more coffee materials next

time.

Because of the numerous college and professional

football games scheduled late afternoon, the

festival attendance dwindled early afternoon. Most

all vendors were either packed‐up‐and‐gone, or

packing by 2 PM. We started packing up at 2 PM.

RR Museum’s participation in her Cotton Festival.

Storage Building Things have been happening with the new Storage

Building at the Jordan Lot. Lots of progress with its

construction and completion. Things have been

happening so fast it has become difficult to keep

track of things that happened, when they happened

and WHO worked on things. So if someone's effort

did not get credited below, let Ed know and you can

become the next on‐scene reporter with all of the

privileges and responsibilities accorded with such

an august position. ;‐)

Storage Building during construction The green metal siding got put up on 17 Nov. by

Orlando, Frank and Sam. The corner planks got two

coats of white paint on 18 Nov. by Ed. Those corner

planks were installed by the Sanborn crew while

they put up the hardy boards. Hardy board installed

by Sanborn Construction, finished about 30 Nov.

The hardy board siding was painted by the Sanborn

crew. Electrical service by Ron Armstrong's crew

consisted of line power to building, large circuit

breaker panel, a GFCI outlet, two 8‐foot light

fixtures, and outdoor light wiring start. Extra

electrical outlets were installed by Ed – six outdoor

outlets, four additional inside outlets, outdoor light

(donated by Bob Fasnacht) and boxes (9‐10 Jan, 25

Jan). The inside insulation and walls were done by

Orlando, Bill Carrington, Mike Stokes, Ed, and Keith

on 26 Jan.

Ceiling plywood, painted walls and ceiling white

primer were done by Orlando, Mike, Bill, and Ed on

2 Feb.

The shelves were started by Orlando on 3 Feb. while

some of us watched the Super Bowl game. The shelf

chains were installed on 9 Feb. The VERY LONG 8‐

foot light strips were reinstalled by Ed and Jack Grill

over 4 and 5 Feb. And lastly, the floor was painted 9

Feb. So moving of ECGRC things from the Third Rail

Car happened Thursday thru Saturday, 14‐16 Feb.

Now the Third Rail Car is empty of ECGRC things.

Shelving start by Orlando Whew! Lots of hands. Lots of hard work. Lots of

activity. It looks like lots of empty shelving but it will

get all filled up quickly with things from the Third

Rail Car and members' trains.



Fairhope Train Show The SouthWest Alabama Railroad Modelers

(SWARM) has wrapped up its hosting of the

Fairhope Train Show. They ran it for 20 years. It

took a lot of work by many people, and many we

did not know about. Herb Kern was the nexus of

work crews. Herb was doing everything,

everywhere, all of the time. Herb’s declining health

problems severely limited his activities such as

marshaling a train show.

availability was also very much in question – open,

re‐use, sell off, tear down, and so on. There were

many discussions, ideas, intents, and stories. All

contributed to the uncertainty of the old school

building future.

the train show after 20 terrific years.

Ed Dice has participated in most of those train

shows with either the Montgomery AL HO modular

layout, as the NMRA/SER/Gulf Division rep, and

with the ECGRC lawn garden railroad.

While the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival will still go

on, the train show has retired for a well‐deserved

rest.

CRESTVIEW TRAIN HISTORY DISPLAY

Paul Weston set up an information display on the

local railroad history at the Crestview library.

in N.W. Florida. The Yellow River Railroad history

was displayed as it ran from Crestview to Florala.

The railroad was built to support the logging

industry and the trees they harvested were up to 6

feet in diameter.

There was a section on the restoration of the Milton

depot showing before and after restoration

pictures.

A display of G scale trains and the addresses of local

model railroad clubs completed the presentation.

The display ran thru December and into January.

The local newspaper, Crestview News Leader,

published a nice news article on the library display.

Thanks, Paul, for spreading the word on railroads,

local history, the RR Museum and the garden RR.

Milton Train Wreck Milton authorities reported a significant train

wreck.

this significant freight train wreck did occur.

Fortunately, track damage was very limited and

relatively minor. The box cars and other freight cars

were righted back onto the tracks and proceeded

without further impediments on down the tracks.

However, the train engineer was the notorious Mr.

Paul Weston and investigations are still proceeding.

Exact cause was not listed in the available incident

documents. Some local folks attributed the train

wreck to alien squirrels with hostile intents. Some

credence was held by some in that alien life‐forms

in other places like Mars could very well be

instantiated with the form of intelligent squirrels.

Other observations revolved around monster tree

leaves and other debris on the track right of way.

Authorities were not able to authenticate that a

sobriety test was performed on Mr. Weston within

the prescribed time window immediately after the

train wreck accident.

Pending final investigative reports, the engineer

jumped onto another train, a steam engine

passenger train, and encountered another

"incident" on the Milton tracks. Mr. Weston

immediately hopped into an available airplane and

documented that monster leaves did, in fact, cause

the train derailment incident. The arbor society has

not responded to requests for comments as of press

time.

period of time, authorities are keeping a very close

eye on the activities of Mr. Weston pending final

decisions on the accidents.

Health and Welfare

Stephanie – doing OK but still having some

troubles. Get better, Steff

Carol Stewart – TMJ is still a major bother.

Larry Ramstad – 70 and still chugging along.

Mary Caraway – hand surgery went fine and using

hands now to fix up house and get it listed. Anyone

need a very nice home?

Art Tuttle – bone is healed well, and getting

around very well.

Paul Karczewski – the 7‐1/2” railroad is expanding

and growing. Great progress with lots of help from

friends

Tom & Kathy Perry – Toys For Tots has been a big

success as Bob & Kathy are busy stuffing bags,

collecting toys and all of that for over 400 needy

kids.

illness.

22 thru March 8 on a two week cross country RV

trip to Phoenix, Az. where the second NASCAR race

of the season will be underway. I am truly looking

forward to this R&R. Definitely need it.”

Water Tower Thanks to Mike Stokes for his extensive rehab of the water tower. It is an old wooden model and those wood and glue joints suffered greatly over the years. It was falling and had fallen apart, with pieces scattered hither, thither and yon. We are still trying to find yon for some missing timbers. Thanks, Mike.

Water Tower rehabbed by Mike Stokes AND, Mike put together the train station that was donated by Dick Engler. Dick gave us the unassembled Piko kit back in Oct 2012 at the swap meet. Mike did a great job on it. It is located on the second lobe close to the new bridge. Thanks again, Mike. And, thanks again, Dick.

suffered the ravages of time, Sun, and Mother Nature.

Remember folks, we have lot of other buildings that need some tender loving attention.

Bagdad Festival

March 16 is the third fund raising festival for the Bagdad folks in their efforts to build and open the Bagdad Mill Park. In support of that, Ed Dice and Frank Paine will set up a couple small ovals and run some garden trains. Frank will have his Bagdad Log & Lumber loco pulling some of his log cars. Ed will run some various trains. We have a 14’x22’ picnic pavilion area reserved at the Rec Center and Community Center. All of this located at School St. and Poole St.

There will be a lot of green in the area for the St. Patrick’s Day theme of the festival.

If you wish to participate, let Ed know.

February Meeting The February Club meeting was held on a chilly AND WINDY Saturday, 16 February 2013. Initially, we planned a very short meeting in the Diner to avoid conflict with a birthday (but they ended up showing up late). But the nice sunny weather brought the meeting to the Jordan Lot picnic tables. After a late start while waiting to gather stragglers to the meeting, it eventually got rolling.

All parts of the normal meeting were covered and addressed. Meeting minutes, treasurer’s report, President’s discussion, old business and new business. The next Club meeting will be Saturday,



16 March 2013. And hopefully it will be a warmer time at the Jordan Lot.

Recently we have had two new Club members join. Jim Brown joined in December. Expect to see Jim and his son Jackson around the tracks. Tom Fitzpatrick joined in February with his son, Matthew. Yes, we now have two Matthews. Matthew is definitely a train nut and eager to run trains.

St Anne's Christmas Fair The annual St. Anne's Christmas Market was held Saturday and Sunday, 1‐2 December 2012. Weather was great and crowds not heavy like at the county fairs but still very interested in the trains.

I set up two large ovals in the 35' x 70' space on the patio plaza. Within that was a small oval for the Christmas train with Santa waving, plus the cloverleaf track.

Set up Friday presented a surprise with the revival of the St. Anne's Christmas Lights. While not as big and spread out over the many past years, they did have mostly the front areas set up with Christmas lights. And there were several visitors admiring the Christmas lights and the trains Friday evening. The Saturday evening crowd for the Christmas lights was bigger with trains running until 8 PM when the crowds dwindled.

Christmas Market shoppers admiring trains. Where are the trains? They got lost? One significant milestone reached was filling the cloverleaf with lots and lots of Eggliners to fill up the cloverleaf. After struggling with lack of power, "More power, Scotty, MORE POWER!!!", finally got

the long string of eggliners powered up and moving. And how many did it take to fill the cloverleaf? It took 24 eggliners all in a line. The set up ran for several hours. A video was captured and posted on Large Scale Online for national viewing. Autographs available by appointment.

Cloverleaf with 24 Eggliners Weather was great and very uncharacteristically warm for a December. The warm weather brought out the dew and it was a heavy dew and fell quickly like a shower during the Friday and Saturday evening. Got surprised and ended up with lots of wet equipment and boxes. One minute no dew, next minute dew everywhere.

Track laid out was estimated using geometry, trigonometry, and a touch of calculus. Came up to 450.44' of track laid out on the patio. The wiggles in the front track area added a little extra movement to the trains. The M&M Train ended up being a surprise hit with a few ladies who were M&M fans. The kids liked all of the trains.

Santa Rosa County Fair

April 5, 2013 brings the 22nd annual Santa Rosa County Fair. This is a very family‐oriented county fair. And we have participated for several years now with the G scale display getting a bit bigger each year.

Santa Rosa County Fair April 2012 - a busy exhibit So far the plan is to participate in much the same way and expect same arrangements. Last year was great with lots of space and VERY CLOSE parking arrangements. We hope for the same this year. If you wish to participate, contact Ed Dice.

The schedule is Friday, 5 April 2013, opening. Then Saturday and Sunday regular Fair activities going on. Closed Monday and Tuesday for some rest and recuperation. Wednesday through Saturday regular Fair activities going on again. Close Saturday evening, 13 April, with take down and pack up and clean up on Sunday.

Last year there were 21 operating tracks, including two N scale tracks. Lots of train running activity and almost too much to see in one quick look.

Forestry Conclave & lumberjack festival

The annual Forestry Conclave & Lumberjack Festival is coming around again. On Saturday, 2 March 2013, the Forestry Conclave & Lumberjack Festival will be held at the Milton PSC campus. Plans are to have the RR Museum display and N scale layout in the library hallway again. No G scale loops, track or display. But volunteers are needed to help staff the RR Museum display during the day. Shifts are just for two hours and it is inside and out of the weather. So come talk about the RR Museum, its facilities and some railroad history.

Rock Pile Plan is to have piles of rocks delivered to the RR Museum. Two piles will be in the courtyard area to help fill in the area and lessen the problem with mud and standing water. The rain showers lately have kept it a mushy, mushy mess.

Galoshes required and no splash zone In addition, a pile of rocks will be dropped at the Jordan Lot for various filling in various areas around the Jordan Lot. Main area is the walk path area alongside the Train Shed. So it surely will be available as a work item on the next First Saturday Work Day, 2 March 2013. Plus, the engine cab at the Jordan Lot needs some rust scraping and applying the rust inhibitor so it can be painted. Plus, there are more than a few weeds still needing trimming around the Jordan Lot, including the thick brush on the north side of the north fence line. So bring some elbow grease and Advil, and an appetite for Lorene's picnic lunch.
