Emerald Lakes Village Update 50 Fabulous Years Andrea is still collecting stories and photos of Emerald Lakes Village and our residents to be shown at our Holiday Party. If you have lived in Emerald Lakes long enough you remember Halloween by Marilyn Calo taking photos of all the trick-or-treaters and Jim Demchak passing out cups of hot cider. Winter was highlighted by a Jack Goodrich ice sculpture. And you knew it was Christmas because Lee Clark had a star at the top of his giant pine tree, Bill Cowger had a giant red bow on his giant pine tree, and Bill Drake had perfectly placed lights on his perfectly shaped pine tree.

Newer Residents, Your Turn Those of you who have moved in in the 21st century, do you have any special stories or observations about Emerald Lakes Village? Lakes Report Punny Plea This is no oak. It’s fall and we hope you remember to rake your ginkgo. Alternatively, “Sugar Gum”, you can chop up the leaves on your lawn with your mower and leave them there to decompose and return nutrients to your soil. Let’s all be poplar by raking up our leaves and keeping them out of our lakes. We encourage you to branch out from your lawn and get your ash out of the street gutter and your birch off the beach. And, you maple leaves off the storm drains — in fact, we hope you willow. I know you’re sycamore leaves falling, but do not truncate your effort. The basswood appreciate clean lake water as we all wood.

You should also remove leaves from your house gutters. This is an important fir step in preventing ice dams.

Right Way & Wrong Way to Scare Geese Do not shoot BB pellets to scare the geese off your lawn or off your lake. We have had reports of BB pellets striking windows on lakeside homes. If you have geese on your property run outside and make a lot of noise to scare them off. If you have geese on your lake call a Goosebusters. Our Goosebusters are: Ken Grand, 248-854-5509 (lives closest to Crystal, Emerald, Sandshores); John Hodsdon, 248-765-0318 (Sandshores, Crystal, Emerald); Steve Gentner, 313-530-5501 (Pebble, Emerald, Andale); or Matt Dombrowski, 248-219-1383 (Walker, Pebble, Andale).

2017 BioBase Maps BioBase maps generated from sonar data collected by LakePro were on display at the fall Homeowners Meeting. These maps show the depths and bottom composition of all our lakes, as well as the percentage of vegetation in our lakes in September. Depth and sediment maps from data collected by Professional Lake Management in 2007 were also on display.

The current year’s depth maps showed readings appreciably more shallow than the maps from 10 years ago. Peter at LakePro replied to my email asking about the accuracy of the BioBase maps with the following:

BioBase uses sonar to find the depths, so it’s generally an accurate reading. There are factors that could lead to the large difference from your last map (i.e. the 2007 PLM maps):

1. The lakes may have accumulated enough sediment/organic material to create the change.

2. The water level at the time of mapping can factor in. Water levels are typically lower in the fall, so our maps may show shallower depths than a mapping done in the spring.

3. Softer bottoms (especially mucky bottoms or mats of decaying plants) do not ping the sonar signal as sharply, so this can create some ambiguity to where the unit maps the bottom.

Next year, I plan to keep the sonar running during all my surveys, so we’ll get some spring time readings and see if there is a significant increase in depths.

The Board of Directors will certainly be looking at the spring BioBase maps in comparison with this fall’s and the maps from 2007 and determine if any further action needs to be taken. Our 2007 and fall 2017 BioBase maps will be posted to www.elvsite.com, if they aren’t already.

2018 Budget and Dues Treasurer Megan Marx explained the proposed 2018 Association budget developed from a dues fee of $220 to those in attendance at the fall Homeowners Meeting. The proposed budget presented at the meeting differed slightly from that published in last month’s newsletter; however, the dues amount did not change. The budget as presented at the meeting was approved with an 81% “yes” vote. The dues amount of $220 was approved with an 86% “yes” vote.

The changes from the October newsletter are: $320 in ad revenue, $5500 in Special Projects, $10 in Utilities, $116 in Business, and $100 in Children’s Social, which results in a decrease of $5614 in over-allocated funds. There is money in the ELVHA operating savings

account to cover the projected overage.

Snowbirds, please mail in your dues payment of $220 along with the invoice on the front page before you head out of town. Thank you.

Parade a Treat! Amber Barbieri, Parade Chairwoman

This year’s Halloween Parade and festivities were more treats than tricks! Mother Nature decided to trick us into thinking the day was going to be a harsh entrance into an early winter, but, we were blessed with a sunny — albeit cold — morning. All were still in good spirits as they marched to Walker Beach to enjoy cider and donuts and decorate gourds.

Special thanks to firefighter Rick Matott for leading our brave parents and their incredibly cute ghosts and goblins across ELV! Jackie and I would like to extend a big thank you to Scott Wetzel for assisting us with passing out the yummy Yates Cider Mill donuts! And thanks to Irma’s fruit and vegetable stand on Dequindre for giving us a deal on the gourds!

Editor’s note: On behalf of the Board and our residents, “thanks” Amber and Jackie for organizing such a fun and tasty event! Parade photos at www.elvsite.com.
