Principal’s ReportIt is with great pleasure, as the Acting Principal of Emerald Secondary College, that I welcome back all our students for the start of the 2020 school year. I also extend greetings to all our parents and all our partners that make up this magnificent Emerald Secondary College community. Certainly, for our new Year 7 students, I can only imagine the night before where there would have been great excitement and a few nerves about the start of the school year. Having said that, our newest student cohort have settled in like long time educational veterans! Well done, Year 7! I would like to congratulate all our students for the terrific start, where the main focus has been settling into classes with their teachers. It is imperative that to continue this excellent start, students must attend all their lessons and get to school every day. Of course, if there are extenuating circumstances, we ask that parents approve any absence on Compass.

The other Sub Schools have all come back refreshed, enthusiastic and ready to achieve their personal best and engage fully in the programs that Emerald Secondary College has to offer. As per last year’s information, the College has decided to move to a three Sub School pastoral model – that is, Year 7 and 8, Year 9 and 10 and Year 11 and 12. This structure will assist in supporting all our students throughout their time at the College.

The Heads of Sub Schools, the Student Managers, yours truly, the Assistant Principals, indeed, all staff, are committed to delivering the best possible support for all our students and we ask that this support be reciprocated in a collegial, community focused manner. Interactions for all of us have to be respectful and solution focused.

To that end, allow me to introduce this year’s team:

Head of Sub School Years 7 and 8 – Mrs Sarah Christoffelsz (nee Deer)

Year 7 Student Manager – Ms Sema Yildirim

Year 8 Student Manager – Mr David Carnie

Year 10 Student Manager – Mr Jarrad Donders

In light of this information, Compass remains our main communication platform. Parents and carers, we ask that you log onto Compass to connect with the work that your son/daughter is doing under Learning Tasks and Lesson Plans so that the learning journey becomes a shared responsibility. Also, at times, Compass notices that are relevant to a specific year level will be posted, that may require parental action.

In 2020, there will be a real emphasis on high expectations on the students to share the academic journey with their teacher – teachers are working very hard to prepare lessons and make the activities stimulating and engaging, thus, it is also every students’ responsibility to maintain their academic focus to the best of their ability at all times. The Emerald Secondary College expectations:

‘Are you:

Ready to Learn?Right Equipment?Right Attitude?’

On a separate note, we welcome our newest staff members to the College:

• Ms Rebecca Arnold, who is the Leader of the Middle School and teaches Science, Biology and Mathematics

• Mr William Irving who teaches Mathematics and Science

• Ms Sheena Emery, who teaches English and Humanities and will be with us for all of first term

Before I sign off, a reminder to all students that photo day is the 10th February. EVERY student must have their photo taken. We look forward to a sensational 2020.

James Barut - Acting Principal

Assistant Principals ReportA warm welcome back to all parents and students, we are looking forward to working with you all again. We are now in week 4 of our teaching program, including the time spent during our kickstart program at the end of last year. When visiting classes this week, students have been engaged in their learning experiences. Our VCE students are hard at work with the Year 12 students having returned to school after the holidays with English texts read and have completed their first School assessed task for English. There have been many smiling faces from the Year 7 students as they begin their journey through Emerald Secondary College. They have settled in really well and we are look forwards to spending the next 6 years with them.

Booklist Back ordersThe College has had notification from Lamont that there has been a further delay with the Year 9 textbook bundle. Lamont are due to receive the bundles by Monday 10th February and will deliver the books to the school as soon as Lamont has received them.

2020 UniformThank you to our families that have been supporting our College uniform policy.

Just a reminder about the College uniform expectations:

Over the last three years, we have been transitioning into the new PSW uniform. To avoid confusion and to support our families we have extended the transition timeline.

In 2020, the new PSW uniform will be compulsory for all our students in Years 7, 8 and 9. Items from the old Beleza uniform will be deemed as ‘out of uniform’ for students in Years 7, 8 and 9.

In 2020, students in Years 10, 11 and 12 may wear either the old uniform or the new uniform, and our Year 12’s may also wear the additional senior Year 12 2020 graduation top.

Please note, in the new uniform, the summer short- sleeved white shirt must have our College logo on, and only formal navy dress pants or shorts may be worn not leggings, tracksuit pants or cargo style pants.

The transition timeline is as follows:

2020 PSW new is compulsory for all students in years 7,8 & 9

2021 PSW new uniform is compulsory for all students in years 7,8, 9 & 10

2022 PSW new uniform is compulsory for all students in years 7,8, 9, 10 & 11

2023 PSW new uniform is compulsory for all students in years 7,8,9,10,11 & 12

Host Families for Japanese StudentsWe will be hosting students from our sister school in Japan, Mimasaka Senior High School in March from Sunday 15th until Saturday 28th and we are looking for families who can host a student during their stay. Please contact Mr Kawakami or send your child to his office in G Block to get more information if you can support our exchange program.

Buildings and groundsOver the holidays there was some significant work completed to increase our safety across the school. Further fire mitigation work was completed. Multiple internal spaces were refreshed to remove the possibility of trip hazards forming. Some minor building works were completed including window installation and wall fittings. And our crowning glory has to be the installation of air conditioning in G block! G Block had caused some issues regarding putting AC units in. We are still waiting on 3 units to be delivered, although there have been many happy people working in this space already this year. Further flooring works will continue throughout the term.

We are currently investigating how to reduce the car park issues. Unfortunately we are stuck with the space we have available; however, we may be able to change where we ask people to park. We will definitely keep the College community informed about our progress.

HPV Going from Strength to Strength at ESC As the 2020 year kicks off, the current HPV club is starting its third year with an expanded program of racing ahead. We would like to welcome all of the new members to the club – especially our new Year 7 students. Two years ago when we started we had one entry in the Wonthaggi event in March. This year it looks like we will have four! Training is starting this Sunday at Casey Fields

We also have 2 and possibly 3 teams in a 6 hour event at Lang Lang on Sunday March 1st. Throughout the year we are also looking to compete at Winton Raceway, Kilsyth, Casey Fields and Maryborough events.

For more information, to join or if you are keen to sponsor the club, please contact Mr Closter at the school.

HPV has been able to be set up at E.S.C. because of the generous donations made by the following local businesses that has enabled HPV Carts to be purchased. Currently we have 4 operational carts and a trailer to transport them to and from Training at Casey Fields and the events.

We would like to thank our major sponsors from the last couple of years (hopefully they can come on board this year as well). It would be appreciated if we, as a school community can support them in their businesses.
