Lopez Elementary School, Los Baños,

Laguna last October 21, 2008. This

activity is part of the organization’s

community service.

Mrs. Matusalem, LES Principal,

warmheartedly accommodated the

organization. ERG’s executive

committee led the book donation.

Though the three plastic bags of books

were not much, she was very grateful

for the kindness the organization has

extended. Moreover, Mrs. Matusalem

also suggested that the organization

could also provide tutorial services for

the students.

The External Committee organized

the activity. (PJC)

Ready, set, go! The UP Engineering Radio Guild-LB

finally gave way for the Amazing Race

last September 27, 2008. The activity

aimed to promote unity and

camaraderie among ERG’s members.

The organization highly anticipated the

activity for the first semester. It was

organized by the Internals Committee

headed by Carmelo Juan “Chuck”

Granados.

The Game

Five teams were formed consisting

of 5 members each. The teams will face

series of clues, and in order to proceed

to the next clue, they needed to com-

plete the prior task. The members of

the Internals Committee, who are wait-

ing at the stops all over UPLB, were as-

signed to hand down the clues to the

teams.

The Administration building is the

starting point of the game. The first

task is to go to and find the clue at the

Student Union Building. Then upon

arriving at S.U., their next clue aims to

test their physical skills and team work

since they were assigned to cross the

river. At the end of the river, they have

to get the next clue and go back to S.U.

by crossing the river again. Participating

teams were shocked but wholeheart-

edly and eagerly performed the task.

Some of them slipped, shouted, or even

freaked out in the process which made

it even more exciting.

The next stop was in CEAT. In there,

before getting the next clue their

strength needs to be tested by

lifting weights a hundred

times. The next stop

aimed to test their

intellectual ability

under time pres-

sure. The task

was the

around UPLB and try to find Chuck to

get their next clue. Then the next clue

was located at the famous Carabao

Park. Their task is to take pictures of

the several landmarks of the university.

This was somewhat a fun and easy task

since they have to take pictures with

other people like the guard and the

Ministop employee. After finishing the

task, the facilitator asked them to go to

Neospot computer shop to get their

next clue. Their task was to ask a

member of the team to get a new

haircut at Metrohair Salon and Spa.

This served as their pampering task

since they only sat

and relaxed

exhilarating game of Sudoku. Teams

will be given 3 sets of Sudoku puzzles

where they have to complete two out

of the three puzzles. Then they have to

go to the facilitators to have their an-

swers check. This was the stop where

almost all of the teams had big time

problems. Some did not have pens with

them; some didn’t even play the said

puzzle, while some really got their brain

cells run out from the last task of cross-

ing the river.

The teams spent a handful of time

thinking critically for the answers, but

they are definitely pleasing to watch in

action. Some of them even wanted to

give up, but when a team finished the

task, the game was on. The remaining

teams worked

double time to catch up. They even

decided to help each other out so that

they won’t waste anymore time.

The next task was the test for luck.

Teams had to go around the yield signs

…our oblation model, who was

popularly rumored to be Fernando Poe

Sr., is not who we think he is? According

to a book tribute to Guillermo

Tolentino, it was Caedo who served as

the model for the sculpture. Anastacio

T. Caedo, is the student apprentice of

Professor Guillermo E. Tolentino, the

person who made the oblation.

Caedo would later become a professor

of Fine Arts in the University and the

successor of the deceased Guillermo

Tolentino. Acquiring great skills and

talents from his guru, Professor Caedo

achieved great accomplishment not only

in the Philippines, but worldwide.

Although there is no guarantee that

this information is true, we as students

of the university must not be confused

nor be bothered of this fact. We should

focus on the meaning of the oblation as

the symbol of our nation and to the rea-

sons why it stands on our university

grounds. http://en.wikipedia.org

Did you know that…Did you know that… By Eunice Suministrado

College life is not that easy. Still, we

should be thankful for being here in UP,

while many don’t get the chance to

reach at least college or worse, to study.

During this time, there are many experi-

ences that we will encounter and for

sure, we will also never forget.

One major part of being a student is

striving for academic excellence. But I

also believe that there are many things

that we can learn outside our class-

rooms. It sounds very familiar but it is

TRUE. Yes, we can learn concepts and

theories but we can’t learn and experi-

ence to talk to corporate people, gov-

ernment officials, businessmen and pro-

fessionals, to conduct community ser-

vices, host events and many more inside

our classrooms. All of us will surely

encounter these things after we gradu-

ate.

Our life here at the university will

be full of ups and downs. I think I’ve

experienced enough of that. Repeating a

subject every semester, always taking

the final exams, waiting for your turn to

get your form 26 every registration are

just some of the things that we experi-

ence – well, not all. I remember my first

failed subject. I know in myself that

there’s no one to blame but myself. I

know that I should have passed it but I

didn’t. Others can pass it, so why can’t

I? I’m also a UP student and I’ve been

always proud of it ever since. I just put

in my mind that I must get through with

it already. Failing is a part of life. We

must take it as a lesson to motivate our-

selves to have control and change. I

know that all of us are aware of our en-

vironment in UPLB.

I realized that business establish-

ments have somewhat taken advantage

of us, students of UP. Take a look

around at Grove. Parties everywhere,

night outs, “inuman sessions”, com-

puter shops are always full are some

that are just around us students. Yes, we

can engage to these things but we must

not forget that we are still students and

we must learn to have control of our-

Generations...Generations...Generations...Generations... selves, much better if we avoid them.

There’s one thing that we can turn

our attention to avoid this things around

us. One way is joining organizations.

We have different reasons before we

join organizations, fraternities and so-

rorities. I’ve joined organizations be-

cause I want to experience being in

such, to learn more and to know more

people. These are my reasons before I

join ERG. But as semesters went by,

I’ve come to a point where I have a

grasp of those reasons. I’ve met knew

friends, learned a lot from it and experi-

ence things that I can only found from

this organization. Through the process,

I’ve realized that I must not be con-

tented to what I already have. I’m al-

ready a member so I should take re-

sponsibility.

Our organization has its purpose

and missions. ERG is still improving

itself. Our alumni did their best to

establish this organization. They also

gave their time and effort for ERG while

at the university – and WE MUST NOT

WASTE IT.

In a “manga” that I’ve read, “The

next generations will always surpass the

previous ones.” You are the next gen-

eration and I believe in that statement. I

also believe to the present members of

ERG and I will also believe in the future

ones. We can all be better to what we

are right now and we

can also be the best.

The Finance Committee carried out

two major fund raising activities for the

first semester – Rummage Sale and

“Makuha ka sa piso” raffle. These

activities, together with the semester

fees, supported and paid for several

activities/projects of the organization,

like the EE Freshmen Convocation, ERG

Orientation, Intra-org Amazing Race,

and others. This wouldn’t be possible

without the support of the Executive

Committee and of course, the active

members of the organization.

On the other hand, as several

activities were lined up even before the

second semester begins, the Finance

Committee has already begun firing-up

the money making actions. Seven

committees are required to put-up at

least P1500 as profit from their own

fund raising activities. The proceeds will

good in singing and dancing. Also, he

loves sleeping – of course, with his

Nina the Second. Making both

elbows meet at his back is a very spe-

cial ability that Adrian Quicoy has.

Aside from that, Ix plays the guitar

well. He is a native of Los Baños, La-

guna.

The Oblation Scholar. Aryan Ma-

nalo is an intelligent young lady that

happens to be an oblation scholar.

She also loves to write and she plays

account to a projected P10500 which

will be exhausted for the two major

planned activities of the organization.

Since this won’t be enough to fully

finance our events and other

accountabilities, supplementary

preparations such as raffle, loading

center, rummage, and alumni

contributions are continuously at work

and being discussed.

Combined efforts of the Executive

Committee, the members, and the

alumni are necessary for our activities

to be a success.

Thank you for the unwavering

cooperation and keep emERGing!

We all know that some point

in time people will disappoint us,

but what will you do when one

day you wake up and find out that

you are the disappointment? Such

a problem is being confronted by

college students every now and

then. With high hopes of graduat-

ing on time then suddenly faced

with the walls of despair, aiming

for high marks and ending up with

rock bottom scores, dealing with

individuals whose either home sick

or just too glad to be out of their

parents grasp – we have expecta-

tions that just couldn’t be met. But

why does one persevere through

college?

I am a BS Chemical Engineering

student so I won’t play your psy-

cho-mumbo and pretend to know I

have all the answers. I’ll tell you

right off from my experience and if

it works then good for you.

For me, college is a time when

I have to realize if my dreams are

worth pursuing and turn them to

reality or if it is just another uto-

pian fantasy. It is also a time when

one tries to find out more about

one’s self and discover his purpose.

Society dictates that in order for us

to find good jobs, we at least need

to be a degree holder. Those who

are an exemption to this, I consider

to be lucky. It has been a motiva-

tion to most people to finish

because of the approximately 50

college expecting to land a job after

graduation. Just thinking about it

perks you up to even dream of

something more. In my case, I would

love to have a restaurant, a hotel

and a family of my own.

Big dreams need bigger founda-

tions and with this, I mean cash. Yes,

money! And my idea of earning it is

to work abroad and invest it in the

country. Going out of the country

has been one of the issues in my fam-

ily and the pressure from my parents

just keep piling up (I mean this in a

good way though). My dad works in

Australia, so the family is planning to

migrate there soon. But it’s good to

know that you have parents that

support your dreams no matter how

farfetched they are.

Yet the biggest bulk of why I per-

severe, let alone survive, college life

is because I found a group of people

that will support me, share my

dreams and aspirations, my failures

and frustrations. They are there to

cheer me up and encourage and they

don’t hesitate to ask the same from

me. Life offers a lot of opportunities

to meet great people and I found

plenty of them in my college life. I

found one of these fabulous groups

of people when I entered UP ERG-

LB. Most people are puzzled by the

fact that it is an organization for

Electrical Engineering students and

I’m joining them. But says who that

such differences would hinder great

friendship? It never did and I’m con-

fident that it never will.

For me, persevering in college

ultimately boils down to future job

hunting, self-development, to meet

the expectations of your loved ones,

and building new relationships.

Yes, you might be somebody’s

disappoint for now but you won’t

be a disappointment forever. The

important thing is that you know

that even if you’ve made a blunder

out of yourself you still have people

who you can laugh those mistakes

with and maybe even learn with.

Besides, nobody ever promised us

that we won’t be failing but then

“it’s the possibility of a dream come

true that makes life interest-

ing.” (Excerpt “The Alchemist” by

Paulo Coelho)

Sa Diliman

Noong nakaraang Hunyo

2008 ay naganap ang unang team

building sa pagitan ng UP ERG Diliman

at UP ERG-LB kung saan iba’t-ibang

uri ng sports ang nilaro kabilang ang

volleyball, basketball, at Frisbee. Kahit

na bumabagyo, nagawa pa rin pu-

munta ng ERG-LB sa Diliman campus

para maituloy ang nakatakdang akti-

bidad. Kabilang dito ay ang pakikipag-

ugnayan ng officers ng bawat or-

ganisasyon patungkol sa mga darating

na gawain at palitan ng kaalaman

kung paano magiging matagumpay

ang mga idaraos na gawain. Ang iba

naman ay sumama dahil sa kanilang

ibang layunin, ang makakilala ng ba-

bae at ang iba ay makapaglaro ng

computer games.

Ang unang sports na nilaro ay

ang Frisbee. Dahil sa bumabagyo,

naging pabor ang panahon sa mga

maglalaro dahil hindi mainit ang

panahon, yun nga lang, dahil sa patu-

loy na pagbuhos ng ulan ay naging

maputik ang field na pinagdausan ng

laro. Ang Frisbee ay isang bagong uri

ng laro na natutunan ng ERG-LB dahil

wala pang nakakalaro nito. Salamat sa
