If you act silly, it's your second childhood. Everybody is looking for symptoms of softening of the brain. It's a great deal better than being 65 or 70. At that time they expect you to retire toa little house in Flor- ida and become a discontented, grumbling, limping has-been. But if you survive until you are 80, everybody is surprised that you are alive, surprised that you can walk and surprised that you can reveal lu- cid intervals. I do have a question, however, about the chart of Drug-Aspirin in- teractions (May/June p. 192) . I am not aware of any "antirnetric" drugs; nor are either of the pharmacists with whom I work. These latest findings reconfirm Perl's earlier work linking high con- centrations of aluminum in the brain to the development of neurofibrillary tangles, as well as work of Japanese investigators in both Guam and Ja- pan .. They also lend support to a de- veloping hypothesis that environ- mental factors may be an underlying cause of the ALS and dementia so prevalent in Guam. NINCOS scientists are exploring the possibility that secondary hyper- parathyroidism caused by lack of calcium and magnesium in the envi- ronment provokes an accumulation of metal ions within brain tissue. Future studies will investigate whether accumulations of metals in the brain are a primary cause of Alz- heimer's disease or if other agents or circumstances might combine with environmental factors to trigger the onset of chronic, but ultimately fa- tal, diseases of the central nervous system.
