many sparrows.” God
has known and loved
us since long before
He formed us in our
mother’s womb (see
Jeremiah 1:5 and 31:3,
etc.,). He has directed
our births, our coming
to faith in Him, our
vocations, even the
paths we’ve been per-
mitted to cross. It
seems to me, then,
that a God that numbers the hair of our heads, and
Who loves us enough to give us His Son to ransom
us back to Him, is in the business of providing light
in darkness, strength in weakness, hope in despair,
and joy in sorrow.
Life’s tough, but I’m glad our God is stronger still.
I’m glad my days aren’t up to chance or fate. Any-
thing and everything could happen to any of us if
that is true. But if God is in control of the world and
our lives, then we need not cross our fingers and
hope for the best, but interlock our fingers in prayer
to the One Who already knows what we need. But
hey, that’s just the view from here,
Rev. Ben Umberger
Youth Confirmation Class
In Confirmation Class this past month we have con-
tinued studying petitions of the Lord’s Prayer to un-
derstand exactly what it is that we are asking God to
do when we pray with the prayer that He taught us.
We also had a weekend retreat in which we learned
about Holy Communion. We would like to thank
Tony Novitske for joining us on Friday night and
sharing a heartfelt Communion story and lesson
from his life with us. Please feel free to talk to any
of us about Holy Communion as we would love to
share what we’ve been learning. Our year of study
is more than half over now, and we are anxiously
looking forward to the remainder of our study to-
gether.
Message from Pastor Ben
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one
of them will fall to the ground apart from your Fa-
ther. And even the hairs of your head are all count-
ed. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than
many sparrows (Matthew 10:29-31, NRSV).”
Twenty-First Century Superstition
I grew up in a Pennsylvania German (or Pennsylva-
nia “Dutch”) family in a Pennsylvania Dutch town
located in a Pennsylvania Dutch County. When I
was old enough to begin to think critically I began to
realize that so many of the superstitions that we
twenty-first century Americans condemn from the
Middle Ages are still very much a part of the Penn-
sylvania Dutch culture.
I’m not saying that we grew up believing in fairies
(except the Tooth Fairy) and gnomes (except the ce-
ramic ones we placed in our flower beds), but we
certainly did wish each other “luck” in any out of the
ordinary event (High School musicals, deer hunters,
confirmation, etc.,) It wasn’t uncommon to hope
something does or doesn’t happen by saying the
phrase “knock on wood” while you actually knocked
on something wooden. And let me just say that I
have some of the best four-leaf clover finders in the
state of Pennsylvania in my family tree.
Luck or Providence?
Later this month we’ll celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, a
festival where Irish and Irish wannabes wish the best
of luck and fortune to others for the next year. Lep-
rechauns will be posted in restaurants and pots of
gold and rainbows everywhere you look. I know few
people who wouldn’t want the best of luck for anoth-
er year of life. Yet, I wonder if we sometimes forget
that life is much less up to luck and destiny than it is
to providence from God.
Not one sparrow dies without God knowing about it,
the same God Who knows how many (or few) hairs
are on our heads. Jesus continues in Matthew 10 by
saying “do not be afraid; you are of more value than

Emmanuel’s Women of the

in saving pennies for their
Wishing Well located in the
Lobby. We ask that you bring
any extra pennies you may save
during the week. Our goal is to
collect “miles of pennies” which
turns out to be 83,321 per mile.
Pennies are counted and we keep you informed in
our Emmanuel News. All pennies received are used
whenever a special appeal comes to our attention. As
of February 18, 2018 we are traveling toward our
14th mile with 14,602 pennies. Thanks to you!

My Day on the Mission Field
We are in the process of identifying a new mission-
ary to receive our support. In the meanwhile please
continue supporting this important ministry.
Enter names on the chart you wish to remember or
honor and then place your contribution ($2 per date
is suggested, but feel free to give more) in an enve-
lope with your name and envelope number on it, in-
dicating amount enclosed. Mark the envelope: “My
day on the Mission Field” and place it in the offer-
ing plate.
The following are remembered or participated in our
program last month. Please help us to fill in the rest
of the days for the year. All the donations go direct-
ly to help our missionary.

Inclement Weather Policy
The following policy
will be in effect should
inclement weather arrive
in our area at the time of
a church activity. In or-
der to protect the safety
of our members, the fol-
lowing will apply:
If Anne Arundel County
Public Schools are closed or close early, all church
activities are cancelled. On non-school days, such as
a Sunday, if Anne Arundel County Phase I or II
Snow Plan is in effect, all church activities are can-
celled. If there is inclement weather and the snow
plan is not in effect, members with limited mobility
should plan on coming to the later (11:00) service.
This gives us time to clear and salt the sidewalks and
driveways.
If there are any questions, please call the church of-
fice at 410-255-4141. If there is any doubt about
your own personal safety, please stay in the safety of
your home.
