On the weekend ofNovember 21-22, 2015, ourparish conducted a Parishlife survey. In thedevelopment of our parishMission and Visionstatement, under theguidance of the St. Kilian
steering committee, we sought additional data on thestrengths and weaknesses of our proclamation of thegospel as the Catholic faith community inFarmingdale. 1356 survey responses, completedduring parish masses or sent in to the rectory, weredelivered to the Center for Applied Research(CARA) in Washington, DC for tabulation andevaluation. What would the results tell us aboutparish life?
We will be publishing an Executive Summary of thefindings in next week’s bulletin. The entire document(92 pages) will soon be available in PDF format onour parish website, www.stkilian.com. From theresults, the Pastoral Council will begin developing anAction Plan using the five major themes of our St.Kilian Vision Statement developed by the SteeringCommittee. The Mission Statement that wascomposed states: “The Catholic family of St. Kilianparish seeks to be a vibrant, welcoming community offaith, guided by the Holy Spirit, nourished by God’sword and the Eucharist, and committed to witnessingGod in and through our neighbors.”
The Key Themes of the Vision Statement are:
I. Hospitality - St. Kilian parish strives to be awelcoming, dynamic faith community.II. The Eucharist and Liturgy : We seek to nourishthe faith life of the parish by celebrating meaningfulliturgies, and offering opportunities for a wide rangeof prayerful experiences.III. Lifelong Faith Formation: We are dedicated toinspiring the young and the old through lifelongeducation, and formation of minds and hearts.IV. Stewardship: in all aspects of our faith we shareour time, talent, and treasure through stewardship.V. Parish Social Ministry: We bring our faith to lifeby serving others through compassionate personaloutreach, and commitment to social justice.
THE ST. KILIAN PARISH LIFE SURVEY 2016
Please take time to study and pray over theparish life report from CARA. The researchersthere tell us that the results from the surveyscollected at mass or sent in were overwhelminglypositive. St. Kilian parishioners love their parish.Respondents also quite clearly expressed someneeds that they perceived.
The report includes the demographiccharacteristics of respondents, the religiouscharacteristics of respondents, and theirassessment of parish life and parish needs. Inaddition, the report frequently offerscomparisons between our parish and otherparishes nationally. This information will beextremely useful in helping us celebrate what theHoly Spirit is accomplishing in our midst, anddiscerning what God is asking of us goingforward as a parish into the future.
A researcher from The Center for AppliedResearch in the Apostolate (CARA), Mary EllenFise, will be coming to St. Kilian’s on theweekend of April 2-3. On Saturday, April 2, shewill offer a PowerPoint presentation and Q&Afor clergy and invited lay leadership. On Sunday,April 3, following the 12:30 PM mass, she willshow the same PowerPoint presentation alongwith Q&A for any interested parishioners. Thelocation for these meetings will likely be in achurch meeting room downstairs.
May the good Lord continue to bless usabundantly in our efforts to respond to God’slove in liturgy, faith formation, stewardship, hospitality and parish social ministry.
The executive summary will be published in nextweek’s bulletin
Peace, Father Bruce

Bulletin Reflection:The stewardship message in the parable of the ProdigalSon is that it is never too late to become a good steward.Blessed is the elder brother who had been a good stewardall along, but blessed, too is the prodigal who had to loseall he had in order to understand the value of what he’dbeen given
Living Stewardship:We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parishwho, each evening during this Lent, have examined theirconsciences in the light of how loving...forgiving...they werethroughout the day.

ST. KILIAN PARISHTHE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (RCIA)
ADULT CONFIRMATION
Please meet our RCIA and Adult Confirmation group for this year. We ask you topray for them as they prepare for the Easter sacraments or for Pentecost
Confirmation.
Vincent (seeking full initiation – Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) I come from a two-religion household. My father is Catholic and my mother Jewish. I was not
particularly raised anything. We attended a Unitarian Universalist church for a short period of time, but thatwas it. My whole life I have been struggling with a feeling of not belonging. For the past fifteen years I havebeen on a religious search reading everything I can about all different religions, finally to settle on Buddhismwhich I practiced on and off for about a decade, but still something was missing.
About six months ago I was working security at Point Lookout [and] an elderly woman approachedme and asked if I could walk her to the water. I was assigned to a post I was not allowed to leave so I had totell her no. She understood. She started talking to me about a Catholic Church she attended and how thepriest was very nice. How life was great and she was so glad she had the love of Jesus Christ. We talked forabout an hour about religion and life and she told me that Jesus wanted me back and I should go to church. What really hit me was that she asked me to write down my name so she could pray for me.
A few weeks later I picked up the bible and started reading from the beginning. After a few months ofon and off reading, I decided to give prayer a shot. I was at a low point in my life, not physically, butmentally, and I prayed whole-heartedly and honestly. I suddenly felt an enormous rush of energy come overme and a feeling I have never felt before. Next day I emailed Father Bruce and asked if I could meet withhim which brought me to this class. I want to learn about Jesus and become the best person I can. I feel likeI have Jesus and God on my corner. I don’t want to just learn and become, but I want to teach and letothers know.
Gisselle (seeking full initiation – Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) I’m 14 years old, I was born in Washington, DC and I moved to New York when I was 8 years old.
I’m in 9th grade and attend Farmingdale High School. My parents are Salvadorian, causing me to speakfluent Spanish. I have an older brother who is 23 years old. I enjoy to read and write in my free time.
I want to be fully initiated into the Catholic Church because I want to receive the Holy Sacraments. Ialso want to be released from sin. I want to receive salvation and be one with Jesus. I want to be closer toGod and Jesus by fully submerging myself into the Catholic Community.
Jordan (seeking full initiation – Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist)I am 15 years old and reside in Levittown. I am currently enrolled at St. Anthony’s High School
in the 10th grade. My hobbies and interests include science, piano, acting and swimming. I startedswimming competitively when I was 8 years old for CYO. I now swim with my good buddy Mike forLong Island Express and a summer league for Forest City Flyers.
In the last few years, I have seen my immediate family decrease in size. The passing of myGrandpa first, my Aunt, then my Nana, has given me a desire to develop a closer relationship with God.Through prayer and guidance, God has always shown me the way and helped me through these hardtimes. He saved my life when I was born, and I forever became a child of God. That belief and love ofGod has led me to the Catholic Church, St. Kilian.

Lent is often thought of as a time of sacrifice…..a time to “give up” things such as candy, bad habitsand maybe even the internet. Although these challenges help us prepare for larger sacrifices in life,Lent does not have to be a time of “giving up”. Rather, we can make it a time to “give” alms and addsomething positive to our daily lives and the lives of others. When it comes to almsgiving or helping the poor, the Church makes it easy for us through our newLenten program called “Giving, Not Giving Up”. During the five Sundays of Lent, every household is
encouraged to bring their alms to Mass and leave them in the wooden bins in the gathering space. This act of generosity isa tangible sign of our Lenten efforts to feed the hungry.
