Christmas Traditions

We all celebrate Christmas differently since we have different

traditions.

People in America like to decorate the outside of their houses

with lights and sometimes even statues of Santa Claus. Some

cookies and glass of milk are often left out as a snack for Santa

on Christmas Eve! Towns and cities often decorate the streets

with lights to celebrate Christmas.

Christmas takes place on December 25th, the summer time in

Australia. People often spend part of Christmas day with their

families at the beach. Christmas dinner is just as likely to be

salads, seafood and roast turkey and plum pudding.

Christmas Traditions in England. It is cold and wet in London at

Christmas time. We decorate our homes with holly, ivy, and

other evergreens and hang mistletoe. We eat roast turky,

stuffing and for dessert, chocolate log.

One of the most popular Chinese Christmas traditions is to hang

beautiful lanterns indoors and outdoors, and strung around

the plastic Christmas tree, which is called the "Tree of Light".

Families add paper chains and flowers in bright, festive colours

to the Christmas tree.

BOOK CORNER! At Emmanuel, Miss McManus has been working hard to complete a new

library! There are all kinds of books, which I am sure everyone will enjoy!

Here are some of the books you will find in the library!

The Sinclair's Mysteries is a quartet of children's historical mysteries from author. The first book was published in June 2015. It was Book of the Month. The sequel was published in February 2016; the third instalment, The Mystery of the Painted Dragon, was published in February 2017, with the fourth and final instalment The Midnight Peacock published in October 2017.

Each of the novels are set in and revolve around the fictional department store, Sinclair's. Sinclair's is an establishment very much like, catering to London's rich, offering high fashion, perfumes and sweets. The series heroes Lilian Rose and Sophie Taylor are employed on the shop floor and frequently find themselves privy to criminal goings-on.

The princess and the fog - Once upon a time, there was a Princess. She had everything a little

girl could ever want, and she was happy. That is, until the fog came... The Princess and the Fog

is a picture book to help children aged 5-7 cope with their difficult feelings especially

unexplained sadness. It uses vibrant illustrations, a sense of humour and metaphor to create a

relatable, enjoyable story that describes difficult sad feelings that children can have also

providing hope that things can get better with a little help and support.

The secret agent - Student turns secret agent in this hilarious spy spoof!

This year the secret service made a major mix up, they mistook a 13-year-old boy called Kevin

for a secret agent. This was the sort of kid that would try and zip wire across a building and end

up falling head first into a fountain with his bum on show, so can you imagine what happened

when he was allowed access to the amazing sort of spy gadgets that James Bond would use?

Despite this, it was up to Kevin to save us all from an evil supervillain. It was the most

dangerous, daring mission in the history of the secret service, and its biggest blunder. This top-

secret book uncovers the entire story of Kevin's fateful and hilarious mission.

Polar Bear Explorers Club - If you like Abi Elphenstine you will love Alex Bell! It sounded like a

respectable and worthy enough death for an explorer - tumbling from an ice bridge to be

impaled upon a mammoth tusk - but Stella really, really didn't want that to happen, just the

same .Join Stella Starflake Pearl and her three fellow explorers as they trek across the snowy

Icelands and come face-to-face with frost fairies, snow queens, outlaw hideouts, unicorns, pygmy

dinosaurs and carnivorous cabbages . . .When Stella and three other junior explorers get

separated from their expedition can they cross the frozen wilderness and live to tell the tale?

St Grizzles School for Girls - When local schools are asked to make a film displaying the

surrounding area, Dani and the rest of St Grizzle is set to work. However, Spencer and his mates

at the village school are determined to sabotage the work of the smelly Grizzlers. To Dani’s

surprise, help comes in the form of Granny Viv who has secretly taken up residence in the

school’s tree house with Downboy the dog. Together they come up with the perfect ghostly

video ... but will Granny Viv be able to stay once the competition is over?

Christmas at Emmanuel! Christmas at Emmanuel is a very exciting and special time and we all love Christmas! Here are a few events at Emmanuel that we have already celebrated; firstly,of course the christmas fair which was a big sucsess! And on the 13th we had christmas jumper day which was great fun and really cool to see everyone’s christmas jumpers. The Christmas pantomime is also great fun. This year it will take place on the 18th of December. Also on the 18th, we will have the Christmas lunch which will include christmas crackers and fruit juice and of course a very yummy meal! You may have noticed the ginormous christmas tree that has been put up in the hall which helps the festive vibes. Each class have made different Christmas decorations that have been hung in hall to decorate the place and showcase your work.

6Mc have been writing news reports about the new café Organico. We

decided to include Mia’s brilliant report in this issue enjoy!

West Hampstead is Organic

By Mia S

Organico is a Mediterranean café that has recently opened on West End Lane. Owned

by Harun Celebi, this café has attracted the residents of West Hampstead since it

opened on the 18th of November. The branch is unique because it is a health food

store as well as a café.

The newly opened business is part of a three

shop chain, one of the stores is located in

Broadway Market and the other is in Loughton.

They specialise in salads and serve smoothies

and sweet treats. At the rear of the café, they

sell a variety of eco-friendly products,

biodegradable products, including milk, pasta

and toiletries. Organico are friends with

environment so a total of 95% of the plastic

produced is recyclable.

After the closing of Lena’s café and the

unfortunate event that occurred, the premises

has been a number of businesses that have yet to be successful, but Harun has high

hopes. When interviewed he described the coffee as a specialist product and is happy

to cater for dietary requirements. A customer, Kar-Man, who was seated in the café,

said that it was a calm environment and a peaceful place to be in and get some work

done.

Despite Organico being quite rare, there are plenty of good cafés and shops in West

Hampstead. According to Gail’s (a competing company) the café is a good idea

however they haven’t been there yet. Furthermore, it hasn’t affected business as it’s

only been open a few weeks.

It seems as if Organico has been successful, but only time will tell.

Neveah’s cookery page

A snowman cake: Ingredients:

225g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for the tin

225g golden caster sugar

Four large eggs

½ lemon, zested

1 tsp vanilla extract

225g self-rising flour

Splash of milk (1-2 desert spoons)

For the buttercream:

125g unsalted butter, softened

300g icing sugar, sieved

½ tsp vanilla extract

1 tbsp milk

To decorate:

Icing sugar, for dusting

500g pack white fondant icing

Ready-to-roll icing (we used a mixed pack green, blue, orange and black, or you can use white fondant icing mixed with

food colouring)

METHOD

1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas four. Butter and line the bases of two 18-19cm cake tins with baking parchment.

2. Beat the butter and sugar with an electric whisk until pale and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, and beat well, scraping

down the sides of the bowl after each addition. Add the lemon zest, vanilla, flour, milk and a pinch of salt and blend until

just combined, then evenly divide the mixture between the tins.

3. Bake in the centre of the oven for 25-30 minutes until a skewer inserted into the middle of each cake comes out clean.

Cool the cakes in their tins for 10 minutes, and then turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely.

4. To make the buttercream, put the butter in a large bowl and beat with an electric whisk until fluffy. Add the icing sugar

2-3 tablespoons at a time until it is all incorporated, adding the vanilla and milk halfway through. Sandwich the cakes

together with a little of the buttercream and put on a board. Use the remaining buttercream to cover the sides and top of

the cake. Chill for 30 minutes.

5. To decorate, roll out the white fondant icing on a surface lightly dusted with icing sugar until large enough to cover the

top and sides of the cake. Drape the fondant icing over the cake and carefully mould to fit. Trim off any excess, wrap and

set aside.

6. Roll out the green icing and cut out a semi-circle, using the base of the cake tin as a guide; this will be the snowman’s

hat. Brush one side with a little water and stick on the cake. Cut a strip of green icing and make some markings to make it

look like the band of a hat, then trim to the correct length and stick on.

7. To make the nose, shape a round, flat lump from the orange icing. Mark a smile by gently pressing the rim of a water

glass into the fondant. Cut out two circles from the black icing for the eyes, and then add a small circle of white icing

(from the offcuts) to make the eyes appear to sparkle. To make the scarf, wrap a strip of the blue icing around the base of

the cake, then use a knife to add cuts for the fringe. Will keep for up to a week in an airtight container in a cool place.

Handmade CHRISTMAS decorations!

Here are some easy ways to make Christmas decorations such as

Christmas trees, snowflakes and more! All of these DIYs are going to be

made out of paper too!

Paper Snowflakes:

Get a piece of paper (any colour unless you want it Christmas

themed!) Then fold it as many times, as you want or just about

four or five. After that, you should cut any designs you want you

can make two or ten! When you are done, you can unfold it and

cut a hole so you can hang it on a tree or you can attach a key ring and hang it somewhere else.

Paper Christmas trees:

Cut out Christmas trees on green card (cut out two) then

cut a line in the middle of one. After you have done that,

you slide the one with the cut on the other one. If you

want, you can make little ornaments by cutting out little

circles of any colour card, and then glue them on. Now you are done!

Paper Hoops:

If you want a Christmas hoop like

that then cut three different sizes

of green card and three different

sizes of red card. Then take one

strip and glue it into a circle (do the same with the

rest!)

Once you are done, with that, you have to lay them all

out on the table, put them inside of each other (size

order) then tape them together, tie a string, and you are DONE!

Hope you liked all the advice and use them!
