PSYCHIATRY AT EMORY WESLEY WOODS

HOSPITAL

• Geriatric Psychiatry – 22 bed unit for patients over the age of 63 that have diagnosed mood disorders (i.e. severe depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia)

• Adult Psychiatry – 26 bed unit for patients over the age of 18 that have psychiatric diagnoses.

COMMON ADMITTING DIAGNOSES

Although we admit patients with multiple psychiatric

diagnoses, the most common diagnoses are:

– Major Depression/Treatment Resistant Depression

– Schizophrenia

– Suicidality (with intent and plan)

– Bipolar Disorder

– Psychosis

ADMISSION CRITERIA

• Medically stable

• Primary Psychiatric diagnosis

– Major Depression

– Bipolar Disorder

– Anxiety

– Schizophrenia

*Substance abuse must be secondary to a

psychiatric diagnosis

ADMISSION CONDITIONS

Patients must be able to:

• complete ADLs independently

• manage mobility independently

• transfer independently

• participate in therapeutic groups

• Sign themselves in voluntarily

– Exception: 1014 patient that has been evaluated by a

psychiatrist at an emergency receiving facility

EXCLUSIONARY CRITERIA

• Medically unstable/acute conditions

• Delirium

• Dementia

• Forensic cases (active felony charges, house arrest, violent crimes)

• Infectious disease

• Tubes/drains

• Lice/scabies

• Stage 3 or higher wounds

What does Emory Wesley Woods Hospital offer out-patients?

• Wesley Woods Transitions Senior Program – also known as the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) a day program that provides group and individual counseling for older adults to assist with coping skills and life changes

• We have recently started a geriatric IOP program, and are in the development phase of an adult IOP program
