The Science of Motion…..

In science the 3-6 students are exploring

forces such as friction and gravity by building

paper roller coasters. We have built our small

practice coasters learning about the

importance of careful folding and taping to

reduce the force of friction on our marble

“cars” and keep them moving along the track.

Now we are starting to build our larger roller

coasters to see who can create the longest

length of track or longest running time using

a limited set of materials and tools. Through

this process we will be able to understand

how changing forces affect the travel of our

marbles.

The study of Isaac Newton

Sir Isaac Newton was considered to be one of the greatest scientists and mathematicians that ever lived. He was born in England on December 25, 1643.

Newton had new ideas about motion, which he called his three laws of motion. He also had ideas about gravity, the diffraction of light, and forces. Newton's ideas were so good that Queen Anne knighted him in 1705.

Students in the senior class were exploring

Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion in their Science

unit on Forces. We are now extending our

knowledge of Newton’s discoveries in our

studies of the ‘Great Mathematicians’.

Newton’s discovery of the refraction of light

gave the students the excellent opportunity to

use our light box and prisms to explore

refraction and the creation of rainbows

The more you tilt your track, the faster the marbles go because of the gravity pulling it down. Sophie

You need high berms for corners because the marble has a lot of momentum. Tully

Review - Assembly

Congratulations to all the students who

received awards at our whole school

assembly, it was wonderful to see so many

students being recognized for having great

personal characteristics and academic

achievements!

We all enjoyed the Junior Class’s creative

breakdown on how advertisements are

developed to persuade people to buy a

product, service or join an event.

The students created an advertisement for

our ‘Biggest Morning Tea’ and showed us

clever ways to get an audience’s attention

such a using mascots, catchy jingles, clever

questioning and calls to action. We all thought

Mackenzie did an outstanding job of being

our teapot mascot!

We have added an advertisement for our

Biggest Morning Tea just incase you were

unable to join our assembly. We hope to see

you Friday as we raise money to find a cure

of cancer!

Sport at EVPS

Fridays are a favorite day of the week for

everyone but at EVPS, our students get fitter

each and every week. Between try outs for

soccer, junior sport, skipping & boxercise the

teachers can hardly keep up. The last 2

weeks have been no exception.

Some more parts arrived for the school’s Bike

Track Tunnel! Junior students had a great

time in Miss Smith’s PE lesson giving it all a

test run!

(Cheryl and Ms Smith had fun assembling our tunnel with the power tools…. Ms Avery and Ms Rantissi were also very “helpful”!)

Have Your Say on Climate Change in Ballina Shire Community feedback is sought on Ballina Shire Council’s draft Climate Change Policy. The draft Climate Change Policy sets organisational emissions reduction targets for Council, and a framework for progressing climate change mitigation, adaptation and resilience strategies for Council and the community. Ballina Shire Council targets are more ambitious than the NSW and Australian Governments and aim to achieve rapid emissions reduction by: • reducing Ballina Shire’s operational

greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero emissions by 2030

• using 100% renewable electricity for its

operations by 2030. These targets are considered achievable as they focus on Council’s operations such as water and wastewater, street lighting, community facilities, and planning and development.

The draft Climate Change Policy also looks at ways to progress climate change mitigation, adaptation, and resilience strategies within the Ballina Shire community.

In addition to seeking feedback on the draft policy, Council is also encouraging completion of a short survey to find out how important community-wide climate change action is, what community targets could be set, and how this could be achieved. Feedback on the Climate Change Policy and the Community Climate Action Survey both close Wednesday 16 June 2021. To view the Climate Change Policy and participate in the survey please visit ballina.nsw.gov.au/climate-change-action.

NSW schools invited to have their say on playground shade Good quality shade can protect us from the sun and help lower the risk of skin cancer. The Cancer Institute NSW has partnered with researchers from the Queensland University of Technology to explore what is working well and not so well about shade in playgrounds. We are inviting NSW school students as well as parents or care givers to complete a brief online anonymous survey to help build shady and sun-safe environments for our communities and work together to end skin cancers as we know them. Find out how you can participate here: https://www.cancer.nsw.gov.au/benchmarking-shade-in-nsw-playgrounds. Responses close May 31st, 2021. See the attached poster for more info

Jess Ingold from The University of Sydney is conducting a survey for her Honours project in Primary Education. In this survey, parents and teachers from rural areas are asked about their experiences teaching Mathematics during last year's school closure due to COVID-19.

This is link to this short survey

https://redcap.sydney.edu.au/surveys/?s=T49E984EEY . There are three pages if you are a parent. Jess is hoping this will lead to improved mathematics teaching during any future school shutdown.

See the attached flyer for more information.
