THE ALTORFER STORY

A ltorfer Machinery Company was founded on February 4th, 1957 by the late Edward

J. Altorfer. Ed had previously worked in the family washing machine business, called Altorfer Brothers Company, in East Peoria, IL. He was introduced to the Caterpillar business by his good friend, Buck Swords, who at that time owned Peoria Tractor and Equipment Company, the Caterpillar dealer in Peoria.

At its beginning, Altorfer Machinery Company had stores in Cedar Rapids, IA, Davenport, IA, and Hannibal, MO, and employed about 100 people. Ed enjoyed this business very much, and in 1967 had the opportunity to expand into a second dealership which he called Capitol Machinery Company with stores in Springfield, IL and Champaign, IL.

Ed had four sons, three of whom came into the business after college and several years of employment elsewhere. Bruce

joined Altorfer in 1970, and Jim in 1971. Don joined Capitol in 1971. Richard preferred a career in the investment business and became a stock broker in Cedar Rapids.

The companies continued to grow as Altorfer Machinery acquired the Lift Truck business in 1973, and Capitol Machinery acquired Peoria Tractor and Equipment in 1986. Both companies continued this growth through the late 1980's and 1990's, and on Jan. 1, 1998, they merged into one company, which was named Altorfer Inc.

The first quarter of 2016 is now behind us and I want to update everyone on how

we have fared. Through the first quarter, we are 4% above our business plan, from a volume perspective. Although, in comparison to last year, we are down 9%.

All in all, the year, so far, is what we have expected. Our competitive dealers, and their manufacturers, are shooting at us because of the market gains we have made in the last few years. We expect more of

the same during 2016. The good news is our construction division backlog of sold machines not yet delivered remains strong.

Several weeks ago I was able to see our new construction store in Springfield, Illinois. This facility will also house the rental store and our truck engine activity. It is an impressive facility and I want to commend everyone involved in the design, building, and operation of the store. We will celebrate the opening of the store with an open house on May 25th.

On the lift truck side of the business, I am announcing the retirement of Joe Fischer, vice president of lift truck division, on May 31, 2016. In the time Joe has led the division, incredible changes in the lift truck industry have occurred and I would personally like to express my appreciation to Joe for his attention to the massive change that we

have encountered. Joe, and his wife Betty, will be moving to Florida, and I am sure when winter roles around, they will be smiling.

After Joe retires, Marty Hart, vice president of Altorfer Rents, will assume

leadership of our lift truck business. This new business model is already in existence in several other Cat dealerships, and, we feel, takes advantage of the existing synergies

between lift truck and rental store operations. Change will occur, and we will attempt to make the change evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

Finally, just another thanks to everyone for making it fun for me to represent you. Our company name is powerful in all the markets we serve, and that reality is because of you.

Have a great summer,

"Another thanks to everyone for making it fun for me to represent you. Our company name is powerful in al l the markets we serve, and that reality is because of you."

Safety Announcement from Safety Manager Greg Veselsky~

Whether it’s for Caterpillar, our customers, the government, or our

own improvement initiatives, tracking and benchmarking are necessary parts of managing our risk. When we’re compared to others in our industry, it’s certainly beneficial to know what everyone is looking at and what it means. With this in mind, I thought it would be worthwhile to focus in and provide detail on items that get a whole lot of attention.

A little more about these indicators:• Incidents – We will always strive for zero;

however, it is very likely we will continue to have them. As long as we’re having them, let’s learn from them.

• Injuries – Fifteen more of our coworkers went safely home to their families in 2015 than in 2014. I’m not sure what’s more important than this.

• Recordables - Number of injuries or illnesses OSHA or MSHA requires us to record. Explanation below.

• RIF (Recordable Incident Frequency) – This “incidence rate” is a calculation that takes into account the number of recordables and hours worked. There are numerous incidence rates used for qualification and benchmarking; however, this one typically carries the most weight. The average RIF for our industry is currently at 3.7. Using 2015 hours, we would need to have 10 fewer recordables this year to achieve this number.

What is a “recordable”? In general, it is a work related injury or illness resulting in death, days away from work, restricted work, medical treatment beyond first aid, or loss of consciousness. There are pages upon pages of regulations further defining a recordable; however, let’s just focus on a couple important parts of the definition• Restricted work – A restriction is a medical

provider recommendation preventing an employee from performing a routine function of his or her job. An example of a restriction might be a recommendation for an employee not to use his or her right hand (which they would typically routinely do). Altorfer works to accommodate all restrictions resulting from a work related injury, which basically means we provide modified duty meeting the recommended restrictions. This allows our coworkers with restrictions to heal, provide a productive day’s work, and receive their normal wages.

• Medical treatment beyond first aid - A thorough explanation of this topic would likely cause you to doze off (if you haven’t already), so let’s concentrate on some examples:

• ~ Example 1: Non-prescription medication at nonprescription strength is considered first aid only. Prescription medication or non-prescription medication

at prescription strength is considered medical treatment (400 mg of ibuprofen is not recordable, 800 mg of ibuprofen is recordable). Even if the prescription is not filled, it is considered medical treatment/recordable.

• ~ Example 2: Removing foreign bodies from the eye using only irrigation or a cotton swab is considered first aid only. Removing foreign bodies from the eye using tweezers is considered medical treatment/recordable.

• ~ Example 3: Using wound coverings such as liquid bandage, gauze pads, or butterfly bandages is considered first aid only. Using wound closing devices, such as sutures and staples, is considered medical treatment/recordable.

Why are recordables important? Each and every recordable can make a difference on which customers allow us to work for them, and more importantly, each and every recordable is one of our coworkers not going safely home to their family that night. Both are reason enough for us to work together to reduce them. What can I do to help?• Please report all safety concerns and

incidents (injuries, near-misses, DOT or MSHA violations, etc.) as soon as possible and please help with determining how to prevent them from happening again.

• Please work with your supervisor to contact Company Nurse as soon as possible after a non-life or limb threatening injury occurs.

• Please be open to changes that allow more of our coworkers to arrive safely home to their families each night.

Sincerely,Greg Veselsky

~ HR Spotlight: Get to know Sarah Markham, Human Resources Assistant

Sarah Markham is Altorfer’s human resources assistant. She has been with

the company for three years and has a long list of responsibilities, including recruiting, assisting hiring managers with posting new or replacement positions, handling pre-employment process/paperwork, and sending out family medical leave (FMLA) and short term disability paperwork. Markham also assists the payroll department as needed, and helps Altorfer Director of Human Resources Julie Wallace with various HR projects and

policy updates. Additionally, she's the one behind the scenes sending out monthly employee birthday cards and years of service anniversary reports. One of the larger projects she is currently working on, is contacting local high schools to educate junior and senior students on the Caterpillar ThinkBig program.

Wallace explains that Markham is an important part of Altorfer’s human resources team.

“Sarah is always ready for a new challenge and open to doing things differently, more efficiently," says Wallace. "I really appreciate her teamwork, enthusiasm and passion.”

Markham lives in her recently purchased home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with her two cats Webster and Haley. She is a proud aunt to her three nieces, and enjoys spending time with family, fishing, camping, riding four wheelers and motorcycles, sewing, knitting, online shopping, antiquing, traveling, DIY projects, and reading.

This summer, Markham has a long list of house projects to tackle, including fixing her garage, painting her basement and third

bedroom, finishing her kitchen, landscaping, and starting a garden.

Markham's nickname at work is “Mighty Mouse,” which is fitting as her favorite quote is Proverbs 31:25: “She is clothed in strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.”

Her “mighty” personality probably comes

from her Grandpa Ebsen, who she looks up to dearly.

“That man has been through so much in his life and keeps on going. As a kid, he was always there to pick me up when I was down and I felt that I could never do wrong in his eyes," says Markham. "He’s one stubborn old man now, but I’ll always admire, respect and look up to him.”

~ Altorfer Ag Products Hosts Successful Horsch Sneak Peek Events

Altorfer Ag Products hosted two Horsch Sneak Peek events in early March to showcase the revolutionary, high-speed Maestro Planter

and Joker Disk Harrow. The events took place on March 10th in New London, Iowa and March 11th in Polo, Illinois. Each event included a presentation by Horsch representatives, a complementary lunch, walkarounds and time for questions.

Altorfer Ag Products Sales Manager Jason Lenhardt says the events were a great success and created significant interest about the new products by Horsch.

“Both events were a customer hit! We had great food, great conversation, and wonderful customer acceptance," says Lenhardt. "Customers got the chance to touch and see the latest in planting technology, and were excited to see a sleek new product hit the planter marketplace. Our dance card is full for planting demos!”

Several Altorfer employees recently completed a two-week failure analysis class led by Jim Dettore with Failure Analysis Services,

Inc. (FAS, Inc.). This group marked a milestone by being the first group of Caterpillar dealer technicians, trainers, and technical communicators to complete the entire FAS, Inc. program since the passing of previous FAS, Inc. President and training legend Darrel Davis.

Altorfer Technical Training Manager Jeff Hahn said the training was a success.

“This ended up being a great class. The biggest comment I heard was, I wish I had this years ago. The instructor Jim Dettore came from a Cat dealer, and knows what we need on a dealer level,” says Hahn. “I personally took the same class years ago through Caterpillar, and if I compared the Cat class to the FAS class, it’s by far a better learning tool for dealers.”

FAS, Inc. provides comprehensive root cause failure analysis training aimed to help lower dealer costs and improve customer satisfaction.

The on-site training teaches students how to gather and use facts in determining what failed, why a failure occurred, who is responsible, and how to communicate those findings to customers, OEM's, management teams, etc. Students also learn how to assemble a detailed report and deliver to the class in role playing real life scenarios. The 80-hour program includes lecture, multiple "hands on the iron" labs, case studies, and a final exam.

“Altorfer had a great group of technically sharp guys who spent the week training on failure analysis,” says Jim Dettore. “Altorfer Technical Training Manager Jeff Hahn was

a tremendous help in getting these classes coordinated and filled with students eager to expand their knowledge base in the heavy equipment field.”

Altorfer looks forward to a second round of trainings for a group of managers, PSSR’s and technicians in late September of this year.

~ Altorfer Ag Products Creates New PSSR Teams to Improve Support

In order to improve customer support, the ag division recently created a new team of product support sales representatives (PSSR’s) to

provide customized, on-site trainings. Previously, the ag division organized three to four annual training

events at a neutral location, and customers would travel to attend. Due to the large class sizes, material was kept generic and didn't address specific needs of the customers. Eventually, it became apparent that this training style was not efficient, so it was decided to reformat the program.

Today, by customer request, a team of PSSR’s will travel to a customer’s site to provide training on several topics, including ViperPro/Viper4 controllers, dry fertilizer application, and liquid application. The hands-on simulator training offers real life scenarios to help customers utilize their equipment more efficiently.

Altorfer Ag PSSR Brad Krutsinger says this new style of training has been beneficial to both the customer and the ag product support team.

“The customized training allows us to focus more time and attention on what is important to the customer,” says Krutsinger. “The on-site training is another benefit to the customer due to the size of territories we cover. We are equipped to go to the customer’s location and have simulators and everything necessary to put on a quality training, without the customer having to load up four to five trucks and send the attendees to one of our locations.”

Altorfer Ag Products Customer Support Manager Travis Cornwell says the new training sessions started in January and feedback has been positive so far.

“The on-site trainings have been very popular, with over 35 sessions booked in January and February,” says Cornwell. “The people attending love the smaller class sizes and the fact that we came to their facility. Rather than PowerPoint attendees to death, we try to keep it interactive and fun.”

ALTORFER EMPLOYEE NEWS | SPRING 2016

~ Customer Spotlight: Sabre Industries, Inc. | Sioux City, Iowa

Serving the industry for nearly 40 years, Sabre Industries provides highly-

engineered support structures for a wide variety of industries, including electric transmission and distribution, wireless communications, renewable energy, oil and gas, and government and defense. As an integrated provider, they also offer a variety of value-added services that are critical to the development, expansion, and maintenance of both power delivery systems and wireless communication networks. Located in Sioux City, Iowa, with their headquarters in Alvarado, Texas, Sabre Industries is proud to serve customers nationally and internationally.

Sabre’s recently expanded Sioux City location is home to their tower and utility pole manufacturing plant, creating a one-location production facility. The 192,000-square-foot plant is strategically set up to create a smooth

flow of construction for guyed towers, self-supporting towers, monopoles, and utility structures. Their larger utility poles can weigh up to 47,000 lbs. and span 50 ft. long.

Taylor Forklifts Prove Their Worth Since 2009, Altorfer Lift Trucks has built a

relationship with Sabre, providing them with sales and support for their Taylor forklifts that are used to transport structures throughout the plant. Originally, Sabre purchased three 18,000 lbs. big wheel Taylor units that were used to move cell towers around their yards.

In 2012, Sabre purchased four Taylor TH-350L units, capable of picking up 32,000 lbs., to help facilitate the movement of the larger poles they were manufacturing for the power lines.

In 2014, Sabre purchased one 18,000 lb. and two 20,000 lb. Taylor forklifts to replace two of their original 18,000 lbs. forklifts.

These forklifts offered more capacity for the same size, and allowed them to move the cell tower line throughout their plant more efficiently.

Since that time, Sabre also realized a need for larger tire forklifts that could endure the rough terrain, and had the capacity to move the poles more efficiently at their new facility.

After months of consideration, Sabre purchased a Taylor TX4-360 forklift and a XB-300L forklift. These specialty forklifts have proved to help solve their issues.

Taylor TX4-360 and XB-300L Specialty Forklifts

Taylor’s TX4 Series articulated 4-wheel-drive forklifts were specifically designed for one task, moving material in the harshest environments imaginable. Whether it's snow, mud, or rough terrain – the TX4 delivers unparalleled performance.

Darwin Gamm, director of special projects for Sabre Towers and Poles, says the company has experienced these benefits first hand.

“The 4-wheel-drive significantly helps the forklift move through the terrain out here,” says Gamm. “The ground can get very sloppy and greasy, and we can’t afford to be down for several weeks during spring thaw to let water percolate.”

With an oversized front wheel and tire, Taylor’s XB Series two-wheel-drive forklifts easily handle the lifting requirements of yard operations that typically have rough, uneven ground like the Sabre plant.

“The machines are great work horses,” says Gamm. “We just love them.”

Current ProjectSabre Industries is currently working on a

large project for a local utility company that spans 192 miles across Iowa. For the past year and a half, they have been manufacturing and delivering poles to the job site and are expected to complete the two-year project this summer.

Gamm explains that their new TX4 series and XB series forklifts have helped them keep the project on schedule.

“We’ve really increased efficiency with the larger lifts,” says Gamm. “We can now do three-for-one lifts, allowing us to load the truck beds quicker and more effectively.”

Such efficiency is important for a project

like this as it requires roughly 1,400 truckloads to the customer’s site.

Support You Can Count On Sabre performs most of their minor

maintenance work in-house, but Gamm

explains that their Taylor forklifts rarely need maintenance.

“That’s a true testimonial to the forklifts themselves,” says Gamm. “As long as we get the PM’s done on time, we haven’t had any serious issues.”

Sabre has worked with Altorfer for nearly seven years and has always been impressed with the service and support they receive from the lift truck division.

“We have a great relationship with Altorfer,” says Gamm. “The service team is accountable, and Randy, our sales representative, is responsive and gets back to us whenever we need anything. I’ve never had a customer service issue or complaint with them.”

East Peoria Service Manager Tim Koons, East Peoria Field Service Manager Chad Hartley, East Peoria Service Manager Bill Bimrose

and Davenport Service Manager Keegan Puls successfully completed a 10 month online Cat service training cohort in December of 2015.

Many extra hours were spent on homework and research assignments as the group worked with dealer personnel from across

the U.S. to cover all aspects of service management. Throughout the course, they were evaluated by professors from

Rutgers University and Caterpillar in individual and team assignments. The training culminated in presentations from four teams on a strategic plan to solve a mock business problem. Congratulations to these hardworking employees on this achievement!

Most people would never buy a house without a thorough inspection by a trained professional, so why should it be any different with a

pre-owned combine? That’s what Troy Atwood of Cisne, Illinois thought when he was in the market to upgrade his combine.

Atwood purchased a 2013 LEXION 780TT combine in June of 2015 from Altorfer Ag Products Sales Representative Jason Simpson, and the machine has been nothing short of impressive for Atwood Farms. That’s because the used combine is part of LEXION’S Field Ready Reconditioned Program, designed to give farmers “peace of mind” when purchasing a used combine. This program ensures the machine is put through a 250-point inspection, requiring 7-8 hours of labor, and includes fluid analysis and visual inspections of all critical components:

• Fluid Level Checks• Cleaning Separation Area• Cab/Operator’s Platform• Front Feederhouse• Left Side• Right Side• Engine Compartment/Grain Tank• Rear Straw Chopper

Once the inspection is complete, Altorfer Ag Products makes all repairs associated with the service agreement and backs the purchase with LEXION’s 500-Hour sysCARE Coverage. This coverage includes all major components and other specified areas of the combine. An Altorfer Ag Sales Representative can also provide a Warranty Coverage Statement which details all warrantable items on the machine.

Atwood explains that this warranty was a major deciding factor in his purchase of a used combine.

“The Field Ready Program really gave me the confidence to buy a used machine,” says Atwood. “The warranty program took a lot of pressure off making a major investment like this.”

A reconditioned combine also comes with many of the amenities you might only expect to find on a combine with that “new combine smell,” including:

• A new CLAAS seat cover• 13-piece wrench set• Variator belt removal bolts• Tensioner removal nut• Panel wrench• Training DVD’s with helpful tips and tricks• Detailed videos on how to inspect the

machine at 10, 50, 100, 500 hour points

Altorfer Ag Sales Representative Jason Simpson agrees that the program gives farmers the assurance that they typically don’t receive when buying used equipment.

“With the sysCARE warranty covering all major component failures, the LEXION Field Ready Program gives farmers confidence that the machine is ready to roll,” says Simpson. “This says a lot about CLAAS because they’re standing behind their used combines – that’s a huge benefit to the customer.”

Atwood currently farms 5,000 acres of corn, beans and wheat with the help of his two sons who will likely take over the family farm like he did in 2009. And so far, all three have been pleased with the like- new machine.

“I’ve had the combine for almost a year and have been very impressed with the machine,” explains Atwood. “I’m impressed with the capacity and the track system - the way it carries itself through the field.”

With nearly 25 years of experience, the proud farmer extends some words of advice to future farmers like his sons:

“Find farmers that have like operations to yours. Find out what has worked and what hasn’t. Sometimes what hasn’t worked is just as helpful as what has worked,” says Atwood. “And also, appreciate every day because it’s a great way to make a living!”

The Urbana construction location had an exciting start to the year as they completed

their first certified powertrain (CPT) rebuild on Mid America Sand and Gravel’s 980H. Costing over $200,000, the rebuild took roughly two and a half months to complete. This included two weeks for final touches such as rebuilding the articulation hitch, loader frame and bucket.

Mid America Sand and Gravel has been in business for 45 years and has a total of six Cat 980’s, including a new 980M that delivered in early March. The loyal customer has four other 980H’s in similar hour ranges that are possible candidates for future CPT’s.

Altorfer Store Manager Rich Ballard is hopeful that this is the store’s first of many CPT’s to come.

“Feedback from the customer, so far, has been very positive,” says Ballard. “They thought that the loader looked great and is performing very well.”

Altorfer Ag Products Sales Manager Kenny Sutton, Altorfer Ag Sales Representative Curt Alexander, and Altorfer Ag Sales

Representative Mark Cowan recently participated in a Caterpillar factory tour with the District 11 Farm Bureau members in Decatur, Illinois. Attendees, which included board members and executives from their county Farm Bureaus, were able to see several sizes of off road trucks at various stages of completion.

Sutton said he was impressed with the tour and so were the Farm Bureau members.

“The group I was in asked a lot of questions and were particularly interested in Tier 4 compliance, the mechanical aspect of the 797, and the climate of construction equipment purchasing and production schedules,” explains Sutton. “A few attendees were road commissioners or were on the board and familiar with the smaller road graders. Everyone had interest in the military spec scrapers being built and the difference between it and a standard construction spec.”

Caterpillar also took the chance to talk about the new Cat® Farm Bureau member benefits during the tour, as many of the attendees were Altorfer customers.

~ Hannibal Hosts Quincy Home Builder Association Monthly Meeting

The Hannibal construction location was honored to host the Quincy Home Builder Association monthly meeting this past February.

Roughly 75 association members attended to learn about important city updates concerning builders and suppliers. Attendees also enjoyed machine walk arounds and tours of the store led by Jay Smith and Tom Will, with input from department heads and store personnel including Ross Tenhouse, Ronnie Colbert, Keith Majors, Terry Hull, Bill Kolb, Rich Bohne, Rodney Brinkman, Richard Cody, and Lyndall Bartells. The meeting also included a catered dinner, drinks and door prizes throughout the evening.

Altorfer Construction Sales Representative Jay Smith said the meeting was a great opportunity to showcase Altorfer’s value to many potential customers.

“Despite the location being outside of city limits, and a bit of a drive

for some members, the association decided to give it a try and was very pleased with the outcome,” explains Smith. “This was the first time many of the members had ever been to a store and they were very impressed.”

Smith also expressed his appreciation for Tom Will and the Hannibal store team for their hard work and preparation leading up to the event.

“I want to thank everyone at the Hannibal store for make this a successful Altorfer event! I understand that this required additional time on everyone’s part to get the store ready for the meeting, along with the cleanup the next day to get things back to normal,” says Smith. “Tom Will and his team work hard everyday to help the sales team succeed and it does not go unnoticed. Thanks, Hannibal, for all that you do to help Altorfer win in my patch!”

A group of high school students from the Cascade Future Farmers of America (FFA) program visited two Altorfer facilities in early

April. The students were picked up in the Altorfer bus and transported to the West Branch facility where they got a tour of the store and learned more about the types of ag equipment that Altorfer sells. Following their West Branch visit, the bus drove them to the Cedar Rapids construction location where they learned more about the company, enjoyed lunch and toured the facility.

Altorfer Ag Sales Representative Al Ries coordinated this trip and said it was a great day.

“They were all very impressed with Altorfer and the atmosphere of such a big company,” says Ries.

To the right is a thank you letter from one of the students who enjoyed the trip.

~ Local High School Students Visit New Springfield Location

The new Springfield location hosted a group of local students from various Springfield

area high schools on April 4, 2016. They learned about the history of Altorfer, Caterpillar Inc., and the basics of how a construction dealership works. Springfield Service Manager John Monroe then accompanied the group on a tour of the new facility.

The students are enrolled in what is called the “Sangamon CEO” program. Principally, these students have expressed an interest in being future entrepreneurs. They meet every day of the school year from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and visit at least two different companies each week to learn about the different opportunities of the business world.

Each year, Altorfer’s Moberly location donates items to

the local Shop With a Deputy fundraiser over the holidays. This past year, the fundraiser also included a concert and a live auction.

Altorfer donated two Cat sweatshirts to be auctioned off at the event, and once the bidding began, it just kept on going. In the end, the two sweatshirts were sold for $940.00!

Altorfer Moberly Store Manager Dave Gass attended the event and said that an attendee won the first bid, but then donated the sweatshirts right back, so the bidding began again.

Shop With a Deputy seeks to provide one-on-one interaction and teach the gift of giving. Children get to shop for themselves, and also siblings, parents or caregivers.

In early April, Altorfer Rental Sales Representatives Aaron Coleman and Jake

Schmidt hosted a group of Eilertson employees for a tour of the Caterpillar facilities in Peoria, Illinois. Their visit started at the Caterpillar Foundry, where they were able to see the V16 block (pictured) getting poured. After the foundry, they headed to the Track Type Tractor building and then to the Caterpillar Edwards Proving Grounds to enjoy lunch and watch a machine demo. There they saw over 40 machines roll through the demo grounds. About Eilertson

Based in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, Eilertson specializes in live substation work. The company is currently working on doubling the size of a substation on the East side of Cedar Rapids. At Eilertson’s year-end rush last year, they had five 316 excavators with breakers on rent, a 320, a 324, and a 329 excavator among other machine classes on rent doing substation modifications. In addition, they recently purchased three compact track loaders and three mini excavators from Altorfer last month.

Eilertson first became an Altorfer customer in 2009. Through Altorfer’s willingness and dedication to provide them with great service and respond to their needs with urgency, they have walked away from doing business with competitors and pointed it to Altorfer.

Aaron Coleman explains that their

relationship with Eilertson is more like a valued partnership.

“In the past couple years we have gone from just being a rental supplier, to being a trusted partner to help them with machinery moving, machine selection, and networking,” says Coleman.

Coleman goes on to explain that last year, Altorfer purchased a 20K telehandler that Eilertson expressed their need for. After some negotiating and commitment, Altorfer Rents made the investment in the large telehandler to serve them and keep them from needing to look elsewhere.

In 1967, Altorfer purchased the building and dealership to form Capitol Machinery. Fast forward to 1997, Capitol Machinery and Altorfer merged to form Altorfer Inc.

Frank Taylor retired a few years ago after 42 years of service at Altorfer's Urbana store. Throughout his time there, he saw all of the interstates being built around the area, and serviced Cat D8H's, D8K's and 631's.

Altorfer's teamwork recently paid off when an unexpected issue developed at a

customer jobsite in Davenport, Iowa. General Constructors of Bettendorf, Iowa rented a skid steer from Altorfer to be craned into their project job site at Iowa American Water; however, the skid steer didn't have the pick points it needed to be craned into the job.

In a matter of five hours, on a Friday afternoon, the Altorfer team coordinated a way to keep the customer productive. It's obvious that this was not as simple as it sounds.

By the end of Friday, the appropriate parts were on a dock in East Peoria waiting for pick

up. Altorfer Rents Territory Manager Tracie Ferguson then had her parents, who live near the East Peoria heavy store, pick up the parts and bring them to her that Sunday. That following Monday morning, Ferguson met the

mechanic at the job site to prep the skid steer for the customer.

Ferguson says this type of teamwork is what makes her proud to be an Altorfer employee.

"I have 13 years with this amazing company and just

wanted to thank everyone who takes pride in Altorfer. Only our team as a Caterpillar dealer does these amazing things with such dedicated people. Thank you, thank you!" says Ferguson.

Altorfer's Cedar Rapids construction location hosted their first annual

Technician Career Day on April 16th for local high school students to learn about the Cat dealer technician career path.

Eight students and six parents attended the event to see what an average day is like for a technician, and to learn about the different machines Altorfer services. Cedar Rapids shop technicians Brian Andes and Dustin Meier gave the group a tour of the shop and yard, Cedar Rapids service manager Jeff Walters talked about Caterpillar's ThinkBig program, and human resources assistant Sarah Markham gave an overview of the benefits for full- time employees.

The event was concluded with door prizes and lunch prepared by Cedar Rapids shop supervisor (and grill master) Burt Yearous. Cedar Rapids service clerk Lisa Hamilton was also there to help set up, check attendees in, and help clean up.

Markham said the day was a success

considering it was a new event, and was also one of the the first sunny weekends of the year.

"Everyone had a great time and the event was a big hit," said Markham. "So far, we have two students from the event who are very interested in the program, and who have already spoken with Jeff about what other steps they need to take."

Mike Orozco is the parts manager at the Davenport construction location. He has worked for Altorfer for over a quarter of a century and is this issue's well-deserving Employee Spotlight.

~ Current city you live in: Bettendorf, Iowa

~ Where are you from? Garden City, Kansas

~ Before working at Altorfer, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?As a youngster I mowed lawns for extra money. My grandpa built a make- shift electric mower with a washing machine motor. Every time I plugged that thing in it sounded like a helicopter; I thought I was going to fly away. I don’t know how many electric cords I ran over…

~ What are your hobbies outside of work?Spending time with my family, riding motorcycles, golf and bowling.

~ Do you have any random facts you want to share with us?We are all getting older and there is nothing you can do about it but enjoy life, family and friends…

~ Please tell us about your family. My wife is a warehouse manager for Nestle Purina in Clinton, Iowa, my son Tevin (23) lives in Iowa City and works for New Pioneer Coop grocery foods and is doing very well, and my daughter Teah (18) will graduate high school this year and is completing the Trinity nursing program and plans to go to Scott Community College and then University of Iowa to become a CNA in the medical field. She is a busy person and doing very well. I am very proud of my family and what they have accomplished.

~ What’s your favorite thing about working at Altorfer?Altorfer has treated me very well and I enjoy what I do for the company. I like dealing with and helping the customers and my fellow employees and co-workers. I would not change it for the world.

~ Do you have a favorite quote or saying?Well this is the manager side of me talking, but unlike the service department where they get a 15 minute breaks, the parts department gets to take a break when we have a chance, so jokingly when I see my guys standing around not doing much I will say: “If you have time to lean, then you have time to clean!”Then I get the look, and then I smile. They are a great crew to work with.

"Mike Orozco has been with Altorfer for a quarter of a century now and deserves some recognition. He is the hardest working boss I have ever had the pleasure of working for."
