Dear ECC-ites:

As has been customary,we welcomed the year2007 with SafetyMonth Celebrations, anoccasion to re-dedicateourselves to the goal ofall-round safety. Withmany of our projectsgetting internationalacclaim for theirexcellent performance inHealth, Safety &Environment, we needto bring in greaterawareness and focus tomaintain global standards of HSE at allour project sites.

I am happy to note that our Asahi GlassPlant Project has won the internationalsafety award from British Safety Council, while F16 Facilities Thumrait AirbaseProject in the Sultanate of Oman andVedanta Alumina Project –Lanjigarh have bagged Gold andSilver awards respectively from RoSPA,U.K. I compliment our project teamson this achievement.

The year 2007-08 marks 70 years ofL&T, an apt occasion to recall the idealsand objectives of our nationallyacclaimed founders Mr. Henning Holck-Larsen and Mr. Søren Kristian Toubroand re-affirm our resolve to carryforward their mission. The year 2007 isequally significant for another reason –the birth centenary of Mr. Holck-Larsen,who was born on July 4, 1907. Let uscelebrate the twin events by creatingmany more success stories in ouroperations as a tribute to our foundingfathers.

It is a matter of great pride for all of usthat the prestigious re-construction ofthe Kensington Oval cricket stadium inBarbados by ECC has been completedin time for the ongoing ICC CricketWorld Cup. Kensington Oval projectwill further enhance our reputation andboost our efforts to become a trulyglobal organization. I wholeheartedly

compliment the entire project team forthe excellent work they have put in toestablish our credentials in theinternational arena.

Traditionally companies measure theirfinancial performance on the basis ofROCE (return on capital employed). While performance evaluation certainlyneeds to be based on financials, modernmanagement studies and research revealthat there is another aspect that isequally, if not more, important – thereturn on talent employed (ROTE).

I believe that the real engines forgrowth of any organization are theintangibles like knowledge, relationship, reputation, brand, etc.,which are built by its people and theirtalents. To adapt and tune ourselves tothe requirements of the new era ofgrowth, it has been decided toencompass this phenomenon (i.e. profitper employee) in all the performancemetrics of business units in ECC fromthe next financial year. I am sure thisnew metric would lead to valuable useof the talent, which in turn willmotivate people to perform better andtake on new challenges.

With best wishes,

K.V. RangaswamiMember of the Board

Kuttiyadi – A Trailblazer in ECC for EPC Hydel Power Projects

Up above the hillocks, amidst ruggedheights, meandering ghatways andverdant rain forests is perched theKuttiyadi Hydro-Electric PowerProject – one of Kerala’s multipurposeprojects. With an installed capacity of125MW it is considered a power hubthat supplies much of Kerala’s powerneeds in addition to aiding irrigation. Here, ECC, the Construction Divisonof L&T, is engaged in the design, engineering and execution of all civiland hydro-mechanical works for the2x50 MW Additional ExpansionScheme. When completed, the projectwill achieve a total of 225MWcontinuous generation during peakhours for the non-monsoon period.

ECC formed a winning consortium with Bharat HeavyElectricals Limited (BHEL) to secure this contract in 2003from Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). Out of thetotal project value of Rs.168 crore, ECC’s portion amountsto Rs.86 cr. As the only pre-qualified Indian entity, theconsortium faced stiff competition from internationalplayers. This is ECC’s first EPC project in hydel powersector and is being executed on a Lump Sum Turnkey(LSTK) basis.

The scheme under construction is an addition to the existingschemes – 3x25MW (commissioned in 1972) and 1x50MW(commissioned in 2000). For the 1x50MW scheme, thepenstock was constructed by ECC.

ECC’s work comprises construction of the intake shaft,692m long head race tunnel, 74m deep surge shaft, lower

pressure penstock, butterfly valve chamber, 2km of penstockpipeline (3000t) crossing three bridges, power house, tailrace channel, switchyard and hydro-mechanical works. Theelectro-mechanical works are being executed by BHEL.The project is strategically placed and is scheduled forcompletion by mid 2008.

Mr. M.V. Ramachandran (MVR),Project Manager, states with pride thatbeing the first EPC job for ECC inhydropower sector, it was the largestjob when awarded and served asqualifying parameter for ECC to bagsimilar EPC contracts. MVR says itcalled for an uncanny expertise inhandling of survey, blasting, tunneling,

and construction methods in a harsh terrain. The blastswere constantly monitored through seismographs and theclient was convinced of ECC’s ability to ensure highestsafety standards and permitted open rock blasting. Unlikeother tunneling works where the ADIT(Additionally DrivenInlet Tunnel) serves as a conventional access for men andmaterial, there was no such option here as the proceduralformalities delayed the acquisition of land and the site hadto go in for vertical shaft as an alternative. Since all majorfabrication was done at site, facilities such as workshop, automatic welding machine, four-burner furnace with amaximum capacity to heat up to 620o C, hydraulic testingsystem, radiography pit (to enable round the clock work)were all well established at site. Self compacting concrete(SCC) for tunnel lining was used for the first time in aKSEB project and the clients were convinced of theadvantages SCC offered over the conventional concreting.MVR asserts that though the project team was mostlydrawn from mechanical background that included himself, true to the spirit and diverse skills of ECC-ites they haverisen to the challenges and are on the way to forging alandmark achievement in the annals of KSEB.

Mr. J. Malavan (JM), Manager – CivilWorks, looks back on the criticalactivities at the site and says thattunneling without an ADIT was themost challenging part of the project. Itcalled for a change in methodology andwhen the breakthrough was made in theintake and surge shaft it was a majorachievement. Surveying was all-

important as the job involved underground and elevatedterrain. For the tunnel, the survey was transferred throughthe vertical shaft and then done accurately. Coffer damwork was another area which required deviation from theoriginal plan. Initially RR masonry with 20m high approachpanels was planned but was later revised to Gabion typewith HDPE sheets of 6m height. Another innovativeapproach was diverting the flow of water from the originalthodu (canal) near the powerhouse thereby ensuring worksprogressed even during monsoon.

Mr. R. Sridharan (RS), ConstructionManager – Power House, says “thoughvolume wise it was not a big job, itsexecution was critical and challenging”.The presence of the existing powerhousemeant that the blasting had to becontrolled. Around 8,000 cu.m. ofblasting was done in three months and

excavation was up to 10m deep. Since the client approvedthe plan in stages, procurement of resources was a majorhurdle. However, overall job progress was maintained byworking on more than one front. Innovative measures likediverting the water stream, concreting in gravity position, using locally available boulders to make the filter media inthe peripheral RCC wall for easy drainage of water, SCCfor the panel walls, made work effective and targetsreachable. As finding and retaining workmen was a bigtask, RS initiated training of local unskilled labourers inpipe laying, concreting, etc. Gradually they were tuned todo multi-tasking activities. He proudly asserts that thoughall the assistants are new, they are trained to do the jobskillfully.

Mr. K. Gurusamy (KGS), Manager –Civil Works for Penstock, points outthat a thorough study of the terrain androute was instrumental in planning ofparallel activities at sites. The 2.1kmopen penstock construction with parallelservice track is being done in steepslopes with limited access and egresspoints. He says at one point of time

there were nine working fronts under operationsimultaneously. Utmost care had to be taken duringexcavation considering the presence of local residents, tourists and rubber estates. Since the entire stretch of

January - March 2007

penstock land was given in stages, there were manyoccasions when work was disrupted by local landowners.Maintaining cordial relationship with the locals and ensuringwork progress was a major achievement. Functioning as ateam, the whole unit was well organised and crucialdecisions were implemented with the support of the coreteam members. With regard to training and development,he says the site is a forerunner as it trained and developedthe local workforce and this measure has greatly helped inretaining labour and maximizing productivity.

For Mr. K. Ramalingam (KR),Manager – Mechanical works, it’s beenan extended innings at Kuttiyadi. Hehad an earlier stint during the executionof 1x50MW penstock. For this package, the mechanical works, valued at Rs.42crore, involve fabrication of 3200 T ofpenstock, draft tube gates, Intake gatesand hoisting system. KR is proud that

for the first time in the history of KSEB projects, theentire mechanical fabrication works were done at site. Witharound 2000 T of mechanical works executed, the job iswell on course for completion as per schedule. KR, whoalso oversees the contractual issues and keeps track of claims, says, “As a team we frequently discussed value engineeringconcepts and came up with many innovative methods likeautomatic welding for rocker support, etc.”

Mr. A. Gilbert Raj (AGR), Manger –P&M, views this project as unique interms of the challenges andbreakthroughs made. Transporting themuck and materials from 75m depths inthe tunnel was a Herculean task, successfully achieved through the verticalshaft built on a modified gantry system. The travelling arrangement for the shaft

was adopted from a tower crane winch. As contractuallyECC had to source its own power, AGR made an 11kVHT installation with transformer. During monsoon, thetunnel approach and intake was flooded with water up to345m, which was dewatered within 15 days. Anotherimportant contribution was the design and fabrication ofthe blower ducts inside the tunnel. Since all fabricationworks were done at site, the support services from P&Mwere of paramount importance. In addition, he states, P&Mservices were utilized for all civil and shuttering workswhenever required.

Mr. G.V.N. Raju (GVNR), HSE Co-ordinator, says safe work methodsdevised for tunnelling activity ensuredsmooth execution on all work fronts.Systems such as heavy-duty ventilatorand multi gas detector monitored andmodulated the working environment ona continuous basis. The site has clockedmore than 1.2 million safe man-hours.

Recognising the need for creating awareness onenvironmental issues and their impact on mankind, the

World Environment Day was celebrated in June 2006 atsite, with the participation of professors from NIT-Calicut.For sewage treatment at the labour colony, biologicalenzymes were introduced as per the advice of Mr.Rajasekaran, Consultant Enviromentalist. Apart from theregular safety training programmes and competitions, healthcamps were organised at regular intervals for the benefit ofstaff and workmen.

Mr. M. Francis Dhanaraj (MFD),Manager QA & QC, handling thequality issues of civil and mechanicalworks says that the 2 X 50 MW KHEPproject is of complex nature, havingequal scope for civil and mechanicalworks. During March 2005, a QualityCouncil was formed with the primeobjectives of adherence to the quality

norms in work methods and ensuring customer delight. The project team keeps itself constantly motivated byinitiating value-engineering ideas and incorporates them inthe systems and practices. Highly beneficial in terms ofcost and time saved, the concepts also ensured that theprice escalations did not affect the project execution. Totake down the message of quality to all levels in a massway and to focus and promote higher quality standards insite operations, every November is observed as QualityMonth. A strong commitment to quality systems fetchedthe site the Annual Quality trophy for the year 2005-2006.He asserts that it is a continuous march towards attaininggreater standards, as “Quality is an endless journey”.

For Mr. N. Krishna Kumar (NKK),Manager (Accounts & Admn), it’sbeen a familiar setting to work with. His earlier stint at Kannur hospitalhelped him establish strong links withState government officials and tradeunion leaders. He says, “Administrationis a critical activity due to the presenceof powerful trade unions”. However,

his excellent rapport with the top brass of the unions hasmeant that issues are amicably resolved. Playing the dualrole of an accountant and service care personnel (as thereis no separate staff for time office), NKK has his hands fullbut goes about his job with élan and ease. He underscoresthe meticulous enforcement of Provident Fund (PF)recovery from the workers, aimed at their own welfare; theworkers gradually understood the benefits when the localsgot back the refund. He proudly states that close to 100people reside in the labour colony which is well maintainedand has been appreciated by the inspecting authorities. Asfor the staff, an old KSEB guesthouse has been renovatedto house them. Recreational activities, though few innumber, have been in the form of group tours to scenicspots in and around Kozhikode. Welfare measures in theform of health check-up, awareness programmes are aregular feature at site. A special drive was done for creatingawareness on chikungunya with the help of the local PrimaryHealth Care Centre.

‘Learn while you earn’ was obviously his credo as evidencedby his acquiring qualifications related to quarry operations. He obtained a Certificate of Competency in Mining from

the Director General of Mines Safety in 1981 and ShotFirer’s permit from the Department of Explosives in 1986.SAT thus not only made a career move but also went onto work outside his home state. As a quarry man he hasworked in a wide range of sites like cement plants, thermaland hydel power plants, pipelines, petrochemicals, IT parks, water supply projects, airports, roads, RMC plants and soon.

By dint of his long experience and his own interest in hisarea of specialization, SAT has become an expert in blastingoperations, explosives handling and the procedures relatedto obtaining licences/permits from government agencies. He takes pride in the fact that he has developed somepeople who can handle blasting operations independentlyand hold shot firer permits valid throughout India for L&Tprojects.

Between 1993 and 1999 S.K. Dash (SKD) has taken a degree every two years– B.Sc. (Geology), M.Sc. (Geology), PGDCA and LL.B. On completing hisstudies he worked for about four years as a lecturer at Panigratry Dura College,Ganjam, followed by a stint as geologist with WAPCOS (Water and PowerConsultancy Services India Ltd.) at Purulia where he was involved in geologicallogging, investigation and support system for slope protection.

Dash joined ECC in December 2004 at the Kuttiyadi Hydro-electric Projectwhere his involvement in the tunnel-related works has been very satisfying tohim. He looks forward to more challenging assignments where he can put hisspecialist knowledge to good use. He finds his colleagues in L&T very co-operative and helpful.

The Dashes – Subhet Kumar and Mandakini Misra – have a two-year old daughter.Mrs. Dash is a post-graduate in economics. SKD, who has played kabaddi andcricket for his college, is working for a Ph.D. from the Mysore University, thetopic for his thesis being “Application of Remote Sensing and GIS in GeotechnicalEngineering in Kakkayam”.

K. Jayaprakash (KJP), a diploma holder of 1990 in mechanical engineering fromTechnical University, Kerala, joined L&T in 1998.

A native of Punalur in Kerala, Jayaprakash made his professional debut with MistryPrabhudas Manji Engg. Pvt. Ltd. where he gained valuable experience of six yearsin manufacturing pressure vessels and heat exchangers and execution of turnkeyprojects. In L&T his first assignment was at RPL-Jamnagar as piping engineer inthe xylene plant with the responsibility of the 3,10,000 inch meter unit and rackpiping. He remembers with satisfaction the complicated piping of refenite columnand the 102 m high xylene column for the challenge they posed. On successfulcompletion of the field work Jayaprakash undertook piping material reconciliationand preparation of as-built drawings before moving to the next site.

From Jamnagar he moved to down south, Chennai, as field engineer for the 132km DI pipeline work in Vyasarpadi package under the Second Chennai WaterSupply Project. His scope of work included survey, material planning, erection, testing, and interconnection with existing system and commissioning andmaintenance. This job too proved to be challenging in view of the poorinfrastructure and presence of anti-social elements in Vyasarpadi area and workinvolving road crossing of the busy Grand Northern Trunk Road. At the next site,Sterlite-Tuticorin, he was there right from day one and contributed to resource mobilisation and establishment of siteinfrastructure. Once the set-up was in place he took up fabrication and erection of tower structure, three process towersin carbon steel and SS316 material, process piping and 600 t of cast iron process piping.

At Kuttiyadi since December 2003, again right from the start, is the overall planning engineer for civil and hydro-mechanical works.

Jayaprakash is married to Priyasree and is blessed with a daughter, Anakha Prakash. Anakha, who is studying in UKG,is also learning classical dance. KJP is a sports enthusiast and avid cricketer while Priyasree is adept at embroidery andglass painting. He has attended in-house training programmes on CEMa and planning.

Fostering Innovation

With two job offers – from ECC andGammon – received after the campusinterviews at IIT-Madras in the summer of1977, Mr. A.L. Sekar (ALS) was in adilemma. He was interested in a siteassignment but ECC offered him a postingin the then Engineering Design &

Consultancy Department while Gammon had a slot for himat their Ganga bridge site in Patna. He joined ECC as a GET(civil) and what tilted the scales in ECC’s favour was a lectureby AR at IIT a few months earlier that gave ALS an idea ofthe challenging projects that ECC was executing and thenew things that the company was trying out, like formworkand heavy erection.

For ALS, recently elevated as General Manager & Head –System Housing & Industrial Structures (SHIS), the drivingforce has been innovation and he has had immenseopportunities to give shape to his ideas in a variety ofassignments. At the time of his joining, cement plants andbuilding projects formed a major chunk of ECC’s businessmix and this segment provided a fertile training ground forALS in engineering work related to construction methods.

On completion of training, he was posted in the MadrasRegional Office for about four years. He considers hissubsequent association with the prestigious and technicallychallenging Baha’i House of Worship project a milestone inhis career as it gave him an opportunity to evolve constructionmethod schemes and to also later work at the site as planningengineer. Following this he became a key member in the

newly-formed Construction Methods Planning Cell (CMPC),which he came to head a few years later. Among the projectsthat gave him satisfaction in this function are MICO Plantand Kanteerava Stadium in Bangalore, Jawaharlal NehruStadium in Chennai and Panvel Nadi Viaduct. The Cellnow has sixty engineers spread across HQ and RegionalOffices. From CMPC, ALS moved to head the foundationand transportation engineering functions and then switchedto Ports & Harbours and SHIS BUs.

ALS is keenly interested in books, particularly on philosophy, his all-time favourites being Fountainhead and Zen and theArt of Motorcycle. Equally fond of sports, he was a memberof his college hockey team, and plays bridge, table tennisand carroms. Naturally ALS took an active part in theactivities of ECC Recreation Club and was instrumental insetting up the volleyball court. A devoted church-goer, heis deacon of the Apostolic Christian Assembly in his areaand is into philanthropic work as well.

ALS is married to Jacintha Mary, a post-graduate in EnglishLiterature and B.Ed., who worked as a newspaper sub-editorfor sometime but chose to become a homemaker aftermarriage. She spends her spare time teaching poor childrenand conducting Bible classes. The Sekars are blessed with ason and a daughter – John Arulprakash and Teresa NovillaSheba. Arulprakash, currently in the final year B.E.(Biotechnology) in the Anna University, has set his sight onobtaining a doctorate from abroad and was the best outgoingstudent at school. Sheba, a student of Alpha MatriculationHigher Secondary School, is in Class XI (commerce stream).

team. It is the first mega design-and-build project in L&T’shistory and SK believes the experience will make EDRC afull-fledged airport consultant. Other major projects underexecution include the JIPMER Hospital at Puducherry andIT parks for Cognizant Technology Solutions at Kolkata andChennai.

As part of the efforts to strengthen EDRC-B&F in terms oftechnology, lot of developmental work is being undertaken,an example being the prototype design for a 500 m tallbuilding developed recently. “We are partnering with overseasorganizations like M/s. Portman & Associates (USA) for hotelchains. Infrastructure designs for mega projects are beingdeveloped in association with M/s. HOK, USA for Batanagarat Kolkata, ITC at Bangalore and for the Hiranandani Groupat Chennai, says SK. To cope with the increasing work load, the strength of design offices in Bangalore and Mumbai willbe raised to 50 in a year’s time from the present 15 each. SKconsiders it his mission to develop innovative technologiesand engineering design, and thus help the Company moveup the value chain.

SK has represented the company in various international andnational seminars and presented papers on prefabrication – asubject close to his heart – and other themes. He is associatedwith Federation Internationale du Beton (fib) as member ofCommission-6 on Prefabrication and represents L&T onvarious panels in the Bureau of Indian Standards.

SK is married to Rajini, a graduate in science and postgraduatein public administration. The Kanappans are blessed withtwo sons – Vaideesh Subbaraj who is doing B.Tech. (ChemicalEngineering) final year at IIT-Madras and Harimadhavaraj, now in X Std. at Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan, KK Nagar,Chennai.

A civil engineer firmly rooted inengineering and design, Mr. S. Kanappan(SK) is a master designer who hasambitious plans for Buildings & FactoriesSector in EDRC. Armed with a BE(Hons.) degree from PSG College ofTechnology, Coimbatore and a masters in

engineering from IISc-Bangalore, SK joined the ranks of ECCin 1979 in what was then known as Engineering Design &Consultancy (EDC) Dept. Recalling his association withdesign stalwarts in ECC for over two decades, he says it hasbenefited him in his professional life as well as in sharpeninghis capabilities. “Thanks to their guidance and support, Iacquired the confidence to shoulder higher responsibilities”,acknowledges SK.

As head of EDRC-B&F, recently promoted as GeneralManager, SK has set his sights high on the business front. His team in HQ and regional offices, currently 400 strong, will grow in numbers to 1,000 by March 2008 and to 2,000by the year 2010. With design-and-build jobs constitutingover 60% of the orders currently on hand, SK foreseesexponential growth for such projects and is confident of ECCsustaining itself as a major player. His team has acquired theexpertise required for master planning of infrastructureprojects and mega townships and is planning to acquireknowledge in health cities, sports and entertainmentinfrastructure which are bound to offer substantial scope forbusiness in future.

SK counts Delhi International Airport project among themost significant projects he has handled so far. A team ofabout 120 design engineers and architects is stationed at theproject site to work in close co-ordination with the execution

For Mr. A. Radharaman (ARR), SectorOperations Head–Hydro Carbon &Power, recently elevated as GeneralManager, it has been a full-fledged careerin hydro carbons right from the start.Graduating in Mechanical Engineering

from College of Engineering, Palghat in 1972, ARR joinedECC in 1975 at the Heavy Water Project in Tuticorin afterbrief stints with BPL Limited and Binny Engineering. In acareer spanning more than 30 years, he has been closelyinvolved with some major projects in the hydro carbon sectorboth as an executor and consultant and is considered anauthority in refinery, petrochemical and fertilizer projects.

NFL–Panipat was his first exposure to heavy lift works. ARRsays, “It was like a circus team moving around with foremanand riggers”. This was followed by varying stints at FCI–

Trombay, IFFCO–Phulpur, GNFC–Bharuch and ONGC-Uran. A brief sojourn at HQ-Chennai enriched him in thenuances of erection designing. He recalls with a tinge ofpride his tenure at Jamshedpur during 1977-78 for a deepcooler erection job and says, “I was the first person fromECC to start construction works at TISCO and this laid afirm foundation for the long-standing relationship that nowexists between Tata Steel and L&T”.

Switching from the role of an executor to that of a consultant,ARR moved to Engineers India Limited (EIL) in 1981.During the 15-16 years of his association with EIL, ARRwas involved with major refineries in Bongaigaon, Digboiand Cochin and handled pipeline projects in UAE and Iran.Having made his mark as a consultant ARR returned tohardcore construction and rejoined ECC in 1996 in theHydro Carbon & Pipeline BU at HQ. ‘Develop, Dedicate and Deliver byavailing challenging opportunities’, ‘Getyourself exposed to gain confidence’ arehis recurring theme and mantra forsuccess. A firm conviction derived fromhis experience of over two decades in

ECC. His superiors have exposed him to new things, encouraged him to experiment and empowered him toaccomplish the tasks on hand. He is Mr. S.V.Swaminathan (SVS), Sector Operations Head, B&FSector, recently promoted to General Manager Cadre.

A graduate civil engineer of 1973 from the GovernmentCollege of Technology, Coimbatore, SVS joined ECC in1984 after varying stints in Public Sector Undertakingsand a couple of private construction agencies. SVS foundthat the experience gained in PSUs, coupled with theexperience in ECC, gave him immense confidence to tackleany kind of situation and to become more analytical inresolving complex issues like risk management.

Opening his account in ECC at Raasi Cement site atWadapalli, (AP), SVS went on to handle a variety ofassignments at Madras Cements-Jayanthipuram,Kalpakkam (PRP Building), Visakhapatnam Steel Plant(Medium Merchant & Structural Mill), Anpara ThermalPower Project (Water Treatment Plant), L&T CementPlant at Hirmi, and Sikkim Hospital. Taking a breakfrom site postings due to his mother’s illness, he took upan assignment at CNRO, coordinating cement plant jobs,Thapar Dupont, etc. as well as the civil part of EIDParry, Rain Calcining and MRPL projects and ResourcesManagement for the Regions.

His next assignment, lasting six years, was at ABRO asSPM for B&F and TI Sectors, during which he handledsome major projects like Gujarat Cement Plant at Pipavav,

L&T-Hazira, Shell-Hazira, Ahmedabad-Mehsana andRajkot-Jamnagar road projects and the Watrak andNarmada bridges. In October 2003 he moved to MBROas Regional Manager after a four-month tenure as ZPM(TI Sector) at Delhi and to HQ-Chennai in April 2006as Sector Operations Head-B&F.

SVS believes that Project Managers should get a fairamount of exposure to all kinds of major projectsirrespective of Sectors, for assured delivery of projectswith quality, safety and in time. In support of his view,SVS recollects the challenging opportunities he had inprojects of multiple sectors.

Recalling fondly his site experiences, SVS says some ofthe projects were in remote areas which had no motorableroads and as a result the entire team remained confinedto site. Work was not only “work” but “entertainment”as well! This atmosphere helped to build a close andwell-knit team and gave the confidence to face newerchallenges.

SVS is married to Rajalakshmi, B.A., B.Ed., and, like atrue ECC-ite, gives her full credit for taking care of thehome front efficiently! With their two sons well-settledin life, Mrs. Swaminathan is an active member of Prayas.Rajesh, their elder son, working as Senior Analyst inCaterpillar Logistics, Bangalore, is a Mechanical Engineerfrom SRM, Chennai and has a double Masters Degree inIndustrial Engineering and Operations Research from theUS. Younger son Vijay is an Electronics andInstrumentation engineer from RV Engg. College,Bangalore and holds a Masters Degree in systemsengineering from the US. He is a Systems ApplicationEngineer with Math-Works, Boston and is married toNeeti who is also an Electronics & Instrumentationengineer.

action, coordinating all activities for the world’s largestgrassroot refinery – Reliance Petrochemicals, Jamnagar.Following this, he shifted base to Bangalore as RegionalProjects Manager to take care of MRPL-Mangalore projectand later to Kolkata to oversee the Barauni Refinery Projectof E&C Division. He was then appointed Zonal ProjectsManager for Delhi Region to put the fledgling IOCL-Panipatproject on a firm footing.

Having established the vital links for the Panipat project, hewas called upon to lead Kolkata Region as Regional Manager,a challenge he cherished and executed with panache till May2006, and scaled up the Region’s operations in terms ofproject execution and order booking. Posted back to HQ, henow has his hands full with the Phase II Expansion of RPLin Jamnagar SEZ.

Another facet of his personality is his keen interest andaccomplishments in the art of magic, a passion he hascultivated and nurtured from his school days. Learning mostlyfrom books, ARR developed magical skills and staged showsduring his college days and is a member of the InternationalBrotherhood of Magicians and Society of American Magicians– the governing bodies for magicians.

Though finding not much time to practise the art now, ARRremains in constant touch with some of the well-knownpractitioners and developments in the world of magic.
