What is PAT Testing

The quality of our service depends directly on the quality of our people. At EMS

we employ people with integrity, motivation, responsibility and autonomy

to provide a service that results in

a partnership approach. As our relationshipsdevelop we remain focused on finding ways

to add value to our services and reduceour customers’ costs.

P.A.T stands for Portable Appliance Testing

It is the Process of testing your electrical appliances for safety.

It is done to meet government requirements, insurance requirements and

above all, your peace of mind.

It is not law to have PAT testing carried out, but it is law to make sure your

workplace is electrically safe. Government guidance states that PAT testing is

the best way to ensure electrical safety.

Anything with a plug

This can be a normal home or office appliance with a 13amp plug, or industrial

equipment such as 110V equipment and three phase 415V equipment with plugs.

Detachable Power Leads

Detachable Power Leads such as those used on computers or kettles, must be tested

as separate items and be recorded in your final results as an individual record.

Contrary to popular belief, it is not possible to test a computer as one individual

item. Instead a computer is tested as four separate items. The computer CPU,

the computer monitor, the detachable power lead for the CPU and the detachable

power lead for the monitor.

The same concept is applied for an appliance such as a kettle. Since it has a

detachable power lead, the kettle is the first item tested and the kettle lead is

the second.

Conversely, items that have fixed, non-detachable power cable like toasters,

drills and hairdryers are counted as only one appliance.

Passed and Failed Items

www.emselectrical.com

If the appliance fails any of the tests, it can either be repaired or if this is not

possible it will be labelled with a failed sticker and immediately taken

out of service.

If the appliance passes all of the tests, it will be given a sticker with a unique ID.

This ID will be recorded in an asset register along with the test results and detailsof the appliance.

Who should carry out the testing?

www.emselectrical.com

The Person carrying out PAT testing should be suitably qualified and experienced.

The law requires that the person be deemed ‘competent’. Unfortunately, completing

a qualification in PAT testing is not enough – experience is also necessary.

How Often Should PAT Testing be done?

The law does not have any clear rules on the frequency of PAT testing, however,

guidance has been issued. EMS and our partners recommend that your appliances

are tested every 12 months, but if you feel this is not necessary, you can leave it for

longer. Government guidance recommends a maximum interval of 3 years for

office equipment, 12 months for kitchen and other light industrial equipment and

3- 6 months for tools and construction site equipment. Schools and colleges are

recommended to be tested every 12 months.

Your insurance company may also require you to carry out PAT testing. You should

check your insurance schedule – often insurers will stipulate that yor PAT testing

must be carried out every 12 months.
