From the Editor

Can you believe it’s November already? Where has the year gone? Christmas is now only weeks away - that’s a scary thought! I haven’t even started my Christmas shopping! However, you may have noticed on the front cover that the Glenbrook Spring festival is coming up and the market stalls could provide some great opportunities for gift ideas.

To get you into the festive mood, I’ve included a couple of delicious Christmas treat recipes – see “What’s Cooking?” on page 14. And watch out for next month – I have more Christmas treats in store, including my favourite turkey recipe.

I’m delighted to report that, thanks to your support, this month is the biggest ever Emu Leonay Gazette. It’s all happening in November, with the Glenbrook Spring Fair, Contours Open Day, Emu Heights Production’s interpretation of Hamlet at the Joan, Snapshots exhibition at Lewers Gallery, book sales, pottery exhibition... plenty of things to keep you occupied.

If you have any delightful Christmas stories you’d like to share in the next edition, give me a call or drop me a line.

Kids, I have a special mission for you. I need you to draw me a Christmassy picture. Ask mum or dad to post it to the head office address (top left, this page), attention Vicki, or if you’re really clever, you can email me at [email protected]. The best ones will be printed in the Christmas edition!

Keep the good news coming in and your community newspaper will grow from strength to strength!

Vicki

Talk about talented -– Rebecca Fawkes, Ashley Benson & Olivia Gorman

Don’t Argue With These Kids!

Children at Emu Heights Public School have again excelled at this year’s Oral Reading and Public Speaking Competitions.

Children competed in both the Penrith District and Blue Mountains District competitions.

Their success included Ashley Benson winning second place in the junior Oral Reading and Rebecca Fawkes taking out second place in the Public Speaking sections at the Blue Mountains competition and Olivia Gorman awarded Highly Commended at the Penrith District competition.

Many of the 8 contestants were experienced debaters having in recent times refined their public speaking skills as class representatives on the school’s Student Representative Council

With such talented public speakers throughout the school, both teachers and parents agree they need to think twice before starting a debate!

A QUESTION OF HEALTHof food allergy includ earlier weaning, non-breast fed kids and early introduction of solid foods to infants; genetic manipulation of plants resulting in food components with greater allergic properties; and impaired digestion.

Food allergy is often inherited. When both parents have allergies, there is a sixty-seven percent chance that the children will also have allergies.

There is a difference between food allergies and food intolerances. A person with food intolerance is unable to digest and process that food correctly due to lack of a certain enzyme or enzymes (these are the substances that help to digest our food). A food allergy, on the other hand, occurs when a person’s immune system generates an antibody response to the ingested food. Food intolerance can lead to allergy, however, if particles of undigested food manage to enter the blood stream they cause a reaction.

Leaky gut syndrome is a term used to describe a condition in which the lining of the intestinal track becomes perforated and irritated and tiny particles of partially digested food enter the blood causing allergic response.

Stress: During stressful times, food allergies tend to develop or become worse.

So what kind of symptoms people can experience?

Organics Bin ReplacementLarge green lidded organics bins will be replaced in the next

few weeks throughout Penrith City.Penrith Mayor Mark Davies said: “With many aged bins, it’s

time for new stock. Council’s contractor SITA Australia will replace your large (240-litre) green lidded organics bin with a new 240-litre replacement bin.”

The bin changeover program will happen on one of your normal collection days between 8 October and 16 November. To ensure you receive a new bin, please leave your large green lidded organics bin out at the kerbside all day on each of your scheduled collection days, even if it is empty, until staff have swapped your bin to a new one.

There will be no change to bin collection days.“Keep in mind, we’re talking about replacing 50,000 bins, so

that will mean our contractors will be especially busy over the next six weeks,” Councillor Davies said.

“Thank-you for the continued efforts of our community placing food waste and garden vegetation in the green lidded organics bins.

“It’s all about creating a more sustainable future for our City.”For more information, call the Waste Hotline on 1800 734 735

or visit www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.auThe week prior to your area’s changeover, you will receive a

leaflet reminder in your letterbox to ensure your bin remains on the kerb all day for collection.

A Word on Allergies by Michelle BeechWhen you hear the word, ‘allergy’, what comes to your mind?

Most people immediately think of pollen, dust mites, grasses and so on. But did you know that many people suffer allergic responses not only to these environmental allergens, but also to certain common foods and everyday household products.

Let’s have a look why these allergies are on rise. There is no one single cause for this, but some theories have been put forward to explain it.

One of such theory is called ‘Hygiene hypothesis’. This hypothesis suggests that increased incidence of allergies, could be linked to extreme cleanliness along with some immunisations and excess antibiotic use. Our ultra clean lifestyle means our children’s body no longer needs to fight germs as much as they did in the past. Therefore it appears that if a child’s nutritional status is good, fighting some of those childhood infections can help to strengthen their immune system.

Antibiotics and their overuse: Our gastrointestinal tract is one of the largest components of our immune system. We have a unique mix of bacteria and fungi known as intestinal microflora. Some of our white blood cells (immune cells that fight foreign invasion) routinely keep a check on these microflora to find out how they should respond and act in our body. Antibiotics not only kill off the bad bacteria, but also kill off our beneficial bacteria as well. Accordingly, the body’s immune cells will induce inflammation, which is the beginning of an allergic response.

Food allergies: Food allergies occur in people who overreact to foods that are generally regarded as harmless. Allergic responses to foods occur when the body’s immune system identifies a food protein or allergen as a ‘foreign body’. Food allergies can be mild or severe. They can be transient or can last a lifetime.

According to the Australian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA), food allergies occur in around 1 in 20 children and 1 in 100 adults in Australia and New Zealand. Majority of food allergies in children are not severe and disappear over time, but for some children food allergies can be life-threatening.

In children, eggs, milk, peanuts, soy, wheat and yeast are the main culprits. Children typically outgrow allergies to milk, egg, soy and wheat, but allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shrimp persist. Adults do not normally lose an allergy once they have it.

Food allergies are the leading cause of undiagnosed symptoms. The primary causes for the increased frequency of food allergy appears to be excessive or regular consumption of a number of foods, often hidden as ingredients (not put in the list). Foods can become contaminated following the use of pesticides in farming. Other possible reasons for the increased occurrence

Mr Fawkes discussing Kokoda with David Bradbury

70th Anniversary of Kokoda Ninety year old local World War II veteran, Mr Henry Fawkes, will soon embark on

one of the great adventures of his life, as he heads to Port Moresby for the 70th Anniversary of Kokoda, be held on the 6th November.

Federal Member for Lindsay, David Bradbury was advised that during an upcoming service in New Guinea, three graves in the Bomana Cemetery in Port Moresby would be named. These fallen soldiers were previously buried in an unnamed grave and were members of the Australian “Z” Special Unit, of which Mr Fawkes is believed to be the only surviving member.

Mr Bradbury met with Mr Fawkes to congratulate him on his service to Australia and wish him all the best for his upcoming trip. “Mr Fawkes has had a long and distinguished career in the Army fighting for our nation,” Mr Bradbury said.

“I was extremely moved by his story; particularly in hearing that one of the unnamed graves belongs to a fallen soldier who died in Mr Fawkes’ arms. I am delighted to announce the Gillard Government will sponsor Mr Fawkes and his daughter to attend the 70th Anniversary of Kokoda commemoration in Port Moresby. I hope his upcoming trip is a special and fulfilling experience.”

PAWS AWHILE

Pooch Pampering Pays Off Aussie Pooch Mobile franchisee, Aaron Milne from Glenmore Park has taken out the coveted New Franchisee of the Year established under 12 months, presented at the recent Aussie Pooch Mobile International conference on

Bondi Beach in NSW.The award is hotly contested and is the icing on the cake for

Aaron who started as a Franchisee in October 2011 and has been building ever since.

“Winning the award was truly amazing as I was up against some very good competition,” said Aaron. “It’s such an honour. I absolutely love what I do and being an Aussie Pooch Mobile franchisee is more than just a job, it is a passion and it also has benefits for my many gorgeous dogs who get VIP service and expect nothing less.”

And it’s a passion that Chris Taylor, founder of Aussie Pooch Mobile says is the absolute essence of Aussie Pooch Mobile.

Aaron also throws himself relentlessly into many events to help raise money for charity, the most recent being Million Paws Walk.

“I am so fortunate to be doing something I love, that I want to be able to give back to the community,” explains Aaron. “Being involved in worthwhile causes, and helping others, is extremely humbling. It’s the Aussie Pooch philosophy and something I feel extremely proud to be a part of.”

So what’s next on the agenda?“In the next year I would like put another representative in my

area so I can continue to provide efficient service to my current and new clients”.

Orchard Hills Vet NewsSanta Photos With Your Pets

Santa Claus will be visiting Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2012 to take photos with your pets.

Santa will be here from Monday 3rd December until Friday 21st December 2012. Photos of your pets are to be taken with Santa from Monday to Friday 5-7pm and on Saturdays 10am-12pm. No appointment is necessary for the Santa photos, just drop in and don’t forget to bring your camera if you want extra photos.

A gold coin donation to the Guide Dogs for your photo in a Christmas card will be greatly appreciated.Safety for Your Pets During the Upcoming Festive Season

Snakes – The warmer weather means that snakes are emerging from hibernation. Be aware that we live in a semi-rural area, and snakes will be about. A snake bite to your pet can be deadly, so fast veterinary attention is required to administer snake antivenom. Clinical signs of snake bite include: weakness, collapse, twitching of the muscles, vomiting, dilated pupils, and later stages include blood in the urine.

Paralysis Ticks – Ticks are more common in the warmer weather. If you and your pet travel to the coast or beach or lower Blue Mountains, your pet may bring a tick home and then show signs of weakness, gagging, vomiting, drooling saliva and paralysis. Tick antiserum is the antidote, and early treatment is advised.

Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment.

Aggressive Dogs Come in All SizesDogs come in all different shapes and sizes, some are friendly

and boisterous and others are moody and standoffish. A small percentage of dogs are very aggressive, and these dogs are the cause of ongoing debate in Animal Management circles.

Current Breed Specific Legislation (BSL), which was introduced in 2006 points to only specific breeds of dogs being managed for aggressive behaviour. Council rangers, vets, animal welfare and animal management officers argue that BSL doesn’t work because any dog, regardless of their breed, can be dangerous.

The issue of managing dog aggression in the community along with other hot topics, will be debated at the Australian Institute of Animal Management (AIAM) Conference in Penrith next week.

ABC journalist Ellen Fanning will moderate a panel discussion between Dr Dick Murray (Veterinarian); Dr Joanne Righetti (Animal Behaviourist); Mr John Cohen (Compliance Manager Gold Coast City Council); Ms Vanessa Rohlf (Monash University); Ms Maree Garrett (Animal Welfare League); Ms Karen Ashby (Victorian Injury Surveillance Unit, Monash University); Mr Graham Pratt (AVA SA Division) and Ms Elke Tapley (Mitchell Shire Council) on the subject of BSL and the international impact of this particular approach.

Penrith City Mayor, Councillor Mark Davies, says he is looking forward to hearing and seeing the positive outcomes of these discussions and presentations from leading experts across Australia.

“Preventing or reducing dog attacks and protecting the public from dangerous dogs is a high priority for Council. Hopefully investigations into this issue and robust discussions at the AIAM Conference will get us one step closer to addressing the issue of dangerous dogs all over Australia.”

Nepean Potters Heading into Christmas“Heading into Christmas” is the title chosen by the Nepean

Potters group for their annual end of year exhibition and sale. As well as the obvious Christmas gift connotation it refers to a recent head sculpting workshop given to the potters by well known artisan potter, Suzie Jorgensen.

Enthusiasm was high as was the standard of beautiful heads produced. Many have carried their new found skills on into creating even more heads. Each artist’s own individual style, choice of clay and finish meant an interesting variety in the finished creations. A truly ‘heady’ experience!

The exhibition will be held at the Glenbrook Community Hall on the weekend of December 1 & 2. Opening hours are 9 to 5 and entry is free.

There will be many different pots on display both decorative and functional. It will be a wonderful opportunity for some really innovative gift shopping for Christmas.

“More than six million Australians generously offer their time, efforts and expertise each year as volunteers.

“The value of volunteering in the not-for-profit sector is more than $14.6 billion per year.

“The National Volunteer Awards are a great way of thanking our hard working local volunteers and acknowledging the great contribution they make to our community.”

The 2012 National Volunteer Awards will call on Australians to nominate exceptional volunteers in their community who donate their time to assist not-for-profit organisations.

Nominations will be accepted throughout November with an award ceremony to be held in December to celebrate the achievements of local volunteering heroes.

Volunteer award categories include:1. MP’s Volunteer of the Year2. Junior Volunteer Award (17 and under)3. Youth Volunteer Award (18-25)4. Senior Volunteer Award (65 and over)5. Lower Mountains Rotary Working for Our Future

Rotary Lower Blue Mountains has many exciting local and global projects running throughout the year. Here are just some of the great charity works currently happening.

Book in Homes This great community program provides books for children in schools, encouraging literacy - one of the Rotary International preferred programs.

Paint the Blue Read Another literacy program but for the under 5s. Reading takes place in a series of well publicised events in the Mountains, and Penrith - and at our market where the ‘Big Red Bookworm’ is a nice comfy seat for the littlies to sit and hear stories.

Young at Heart On the second Saturday in December, we hold a luncheon for the old folk in the local area, providing Christmas cards, made by local preschoolers and kindergaqrten children, small gifts from Santa, a sing a long and a great festive time for Rotarians and oldies alike.

Knit In (Wrap With Love) ladies who knit bring their squares and their good humour to an afternoon of knitting, sewing and chat - men are most welcome!

In order to run these community events, Lower Blue Mountains fund raises throughout the year with fun events.

If you’re keen to get involved in the fantastic work that the Rotary Club does, Rotary Lower Blue Mountains meets each Tuesday evening at the Emu Sports Club, Leonay at 6.30pm for 7pm. Many members and visitors take the opportunity for an evening meal through the 2 hour gatheringand each week some form of entertainment is provided in the form of a guest speaker, forum, or evening of comedy or musical.

Be Bushfire ReadyA hot, dry summer is forecast, and with that, comes a greater risk of fire.

Homeowners are being urged to act now to protect their homes and property ahead of the looming bushfire season.

NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said, “The last two years were dominated by the La Nina pattern which typically brings wetter and cooler conditions. This season, the El Nino pattern is returning and trending towards drier and hotter conditions as we move into the summer period.”

It is likely that the combination of warmer weather and grass growth from the recent rains could contribute to a dangerous fire season, so be prepared.

WHAT’S ON?Murder and Revenge return to Penrith

Royalty. Corruption. Murder. Revenge. Guaranteed to keep an audience on the edge of their seat, these strong themes feature heavily in the classic Shakespearean play, Hamlet. Emu Heights Productions are proud to bring this dark and murderous play back to The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre this November.

But if you think you’re familiar with Hamlet, you may want to think again. This daring new adaptation draws on the dark undertones of the 1940’s ‘Film Noir’ genre to present Hamlet in a whole new perspective – think fedoras, longcoats, femme fatales, guns, smoke and shadows. Murder and deceit have tainted the house of the young Prince Hamlet who yearns for justice: but when corruption is everywhere, who do you trust?

Director Ian Zammit of Emu Heights is excited about this bold production which will be enjoyed by many Western Sydney HSC students studying the text as well as local theatre lovers.

“I hope the new setting will challenge some conventions audiences may associate with ‘Hamlet’, by offering surprising and thought-provoking new takes on well-known scenes like the classic “To be, or not to be...” and yet make it really accessible and relevant to today’s world” says Ian. Most of all he hopes the audience sees just how seriously entertaining Shakespeare’s story is when brought to life in performance.

Emu Heights Productions, a not-for-profit organisation, is passionate about producing theatre in Western Sydney. If you too value live theatre in your local area, please come along and support this worthwhile theatre organisation.

This daring and dangerous new Hamlet opens at The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on 13 November and runs for 4 matinees (13 – 16 Nov, 11am) and 2 evening performances (16 & 17 Nov, 8 pm). Tickets are only $30 each, Students/concessions $25. Book your tickets now by calling the Box office on 4723 7600 or go online at www.jspac.com.au

SnapshotOn show until 2 DecemberSNAPSHOT is a highlight of the Gallery’s

annual education and exhibition program, this year attracting over eight hundred entries from around the globe. The final selection of three hundred photographs includes entries from one hundred and ninety nine Australian teens and one hundred and one international teens across two age categories: Junior - 13 – 15 years old and Senior - 16 – 19 years old.

SNAPSHOT provides a unique forum for the exhibition of photographs made by teenagers while also offering audiences the chance to see cultural, social and environmental ‘snap shots’ created by young people. SNAPSHOT has an ‘open’ theme allowing teenagers to select and present a single photograph of their choice. This freedom gives Gallery audiences an insight into the broad range of subjects that teenagers choose to make pictures about: identity, sense of place, ideas on beauty and culture, nature and the built environment, love, community and notions of alienation and isolation.

SNAPSHOT encourages teens to reconceptualise their own photographic practice as an accessible and potent vehicle through which they could quite possibly make a contribution to the fields of commercial photography or contemporary art.

Come and have a look and this wonderfully positive and colourful FREE exhibition on show until 2 December and vote for your favourite shot in the People’s Choice award. The People’s choice winner will be announced at the end of the exhibition.

Karate KidsSensei Brian McCabe has the Goshin Ryu Karate kids fighting fit and ready for

action! He teaches kids karate on Wednesday evenings 6:00pm – 7:00pm at Emu Plains Public School, Emerald St, Emu Plains.

Some of Sensei Brian’s students recently graduated to a higher belt at a gruelling grading at the club’s head dojo in Blacktown. The higher the grade, the more skills the children need to progress to the next belt.

Addison Farnsworth and Zack Renny were delighted to receive their first coloured belt, grading to yellow. Amelia Whittaker and Lachie Farnsworth graded to green belt and Finlay McAuley achieved 2nd kyu brown belt status. Sensei Brian congratulated all the kids for their brilliant performance on grading night.

Another Fox on the RunNoemie Fox is paddling in her sister’s wake,

after being inspired by Jessica’s silver medal winning Olympic debut.

At just 15 years of age, Noemie is making big waves herself now, after recently posting top-five results in the senior K1 and C1 events at the NSW Championships at Penrith in October.

Jessica won both K1 and C1events, but Noemie finished just behind her in second place with a penalty-free run and clocking a blistering time of 123.32sec.

Dad Richard, who is also Canoeing Australia’s national performance director, said, “Noemie has worked hard since returning home from watching and supporting Jess at the Olympics.”

Noemie has been selected in the canoe team for the Australian Youth Olympic Festival to be held at Penrith from January 16 -– 20.

Schweppes Leonay Pro-Am The Emu Plains Sports Club and Leonay Golf Club hosted the Schweppes

Leonay Pro-Am Golf Tournament on October 19.Sixty-two professional golfers and one hundred amateurs packed out

the picturesque tree-lined golf course, which winds it’s way through the leafy suburb of Leonay at the foot of the Blue Mountains.

The large field necessitated a two-tier draw, with half of the field hitting off in a shotgun start at 7.30am and the other half at 12.30pm.

Whilst there would be some spectacular shots played on the day, including a hole-in-one from Club Captain Ron Bradley on the 2nd hole, the event would, in the main, be a day of ‘missed putts’, ‘duffed chips’ and ‘errant drives’ for many of the amateurs, some of whom were picking up a club for the first time in twelve months.

The leading professionals however showed how the game (and the course) should be played, led by Peter J. Welden, who stormed to victory with a 5-under par round of 62.

Defending champion Martin Dive (64) was just two shots adrift, with a trio of golfers (Alex Katholos, Mitchell Kellehear and John Onions) all locked in a share of third place at 65 apiece.

The challenging course held its own against the star-studded field of professionals, with only six players managing to beat par.

Pro-Am winner Welden praised the efforts of Leonay professional Col Banham and his staff for the organisation of the day and also praised head greenkeeper Wes Cochrane for the condition of the course, which many players stated, “was in the best condition of the past five years for this event”.

Leonay Golf Club President Kevin Small and Club Captain Ron Bradley also thanked major sponsors Schweppes for their ongoing support of the Pro-Am, along with a large number of local sponsors who also contributed to the day.
