Doin’ it For the Kids! After leaving the Coffee Club on the banks of the Nepean on
April 9, a team of local cyclists known as the Cycling Cerebellums pedalled their way – a total distance of 920km – to Melbourne. It was a somewhat weary yet elated team who arrived at Brighton Beach seven days later.
Even more impressive than the actual riding was the fact that the group set out to raise $10,000 to fund vital research, support and prevention projects for children with neurological conditions.

Hearty congratulations to the team for far surpassing their fundraising target by raising approximately $25,000. The team were overwhelmed by the support given before, during and after their long ride.
Spokesperson and co-director of the Cycling Cerebellums Barbara Hughes said, “We had the most wonderful time. It’s something we all will remember for the rest of our lives. And knowing we did it for such a great cause made those long, hard days all the more worthwhile. “ Continued pg 3...

From the Editor
Well, we’ve made it through another lot of school holidays. I trust all the kids had a great time. I hope the parents did too. Sometimes holidays can be challenging for the grown-ups, especially if you need to juggle work and keeping the kids entertained.
Certainly a few kids in our neighbourhood managed to drag themselves away from the playStations for a bit of action, as evidenced by their submissions of photos and drawings. Have a look what they got up to on page 5. Thanks for your contributions, kids!
The month of May is very special, given that Mother’s Day is coming up on Sunday May 13th. Best wishes to all the mums for a very Happy Mother’s Day.
Kids, you’d better start thinking about making something super special for mum, or raiding your money box to buy her a present, just to show her how much you love her. If you’re at a loss for gift ideas, here’s a helpful hint - I’ve never met a mum yet who doesn’t like chocolate!!
And, of course, don’t forget to don your chef’s hats and whip up a gourmet breakfast for your hard working mum - pancakes or bacon and eggs always go down a treat.
Speaking of chefs, next month we’ll be starting a new segment – “What’s Cooking”. With the onset of winter, it’s the perfect time to be baking, so dig out your favourite recipes and send them in for all our readers to enjoy.
Also, if you have any good Mother’s Day stories you’d like to share, send them in.
Enjoy reading your local community news and have a great month of May.

Dr Karl Kruszelnicki visiting Penrith Library on 18 May
From pg 1... Barbara said their first day on the road was longest. They pedalled 181km to reach Goulburn at sunset. The group are planning more charity rides in the future but the most exciting and rewarding event will be when the cyclists and support crew ride to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead to hand over the cheque. Barbara said, “We cannot wait to see their faces. We know they will be terribly excited.”The Cycling Cerebellums have many fundraising adventures happening all the time, all of which support the Commercial Travellers Ward and The Children’s Hospital of Westmead. Should you wish to become involved by donating or purchasing one of their awareness bands or T-shirts please check out their website:www.thecyclingcerebellums.com.au
LITERARY DOUBLE BILLPenrith City Library will play host to
a literary double bill in May as Peter FitzSimons and Dr Karl unpack their latest books for the Sydney Writers Festival.
First, follow in the footsteps of Antarctic explorers with Peter FitzSimons on Wednesday 16 May, before digesting how we process food with Dr Karl on Friday 18 May.
Penrith City Mayor Greg Davies said the authors could expect an animated audience for the library’s ninth Sydney Writers’ Festival.
“Penrith’s many readers will delight in talks by two of Australia’s best non-fiction writers and personalities.
“In his latest work ‘Mawson’, Peter
FitzSimons will transport you to the frozen climes traversed by the great Australian explorer Sir Douglas Mawson and his contemporaries.
“Later that week, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki will share the fascinating science behind how the body responds to what we eat in his recently released book ‘Brain food’.
“Book your $5 ticket for the events, including light refreshments, by calling Penrith Library on 4732 7891. Both events run between 6.30pm and 7.30pm at 601 High Street, Penrith,” Councillor Davies said. For more information visit: www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au and click the Library tab.

School Holiday Fun!Unfortunately, the school holidays are
over, but that’s not to say the kids can’t reminisce over the holidays just gone, and then start planning more excitement for the next holidays. In case you’re in need of inspiration for the next school holidays, here’s what some of the local kids got up to this April.
Tamara from Leonay highly recommends a trip out west to the Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo. She loved all the animals, particularly the hippos. Hippopotamuses are responsible for more deaths of humans than any other animal in the world. Little wonder. Look at those teeth on the right!
Daisey, weighing in at 18ookg, is in the process of having her tusks trimmed - a procedure that takes about a week of patience with a hacksaw. Because the hippos are so dangerous, the keepers never go into the enclosure. Daisey is trained to come to the fence and hold her mouth open while her keeper very bravely shoves his hand, holding a hack saw blade, into her mouth and saws away, a bit each day at feeding time.
Tess from Glenbrook took her family and her neighbours camping in the National Park at her favourite camping site, Nioka.
8-year-old Tamara from Leonay had an up-close experience with the hippos at the Western Plains Zoo

9-year-old Tess from Glenbrook took her family camping down the road at EurokaDaredevil Jake from Emu Heights went jetty
jumping in Coffs Harbour
The highlight, she said, was eating the camp food, which apparently tastes better than what mum cooks at home, and playing spotlight with her brother and friend. They were disappointed not to see a single kangaroo during their visit. They did find some droppings though - evidence that the world famous kangaroo population of Euroka hasn’t completely vacated the area. Perhaps, unlike Tess, they just didn’t like the food at her campsite.
7-year-old Jake from Emu Plains took his
family to Coffs Harbour to visit relatives and catch a few waves. Jake’s most exciting moment, apart from eating icecreams at the Jetty, was Jetty jumping – a favourite pastime of the Coffs locals. As you can see from the photo, it’s quite a long way from the top railing of the jetty to the water. Jake tried to coax his parents into jumping. They declined.

M4 RESURFACING FOR A SMOOTHER RIDEAn $11.7 million Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) resurfacing
project will make using the M4 Motorway smoother and safer.Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said the NSW Government
funded project will see around seven kilometres of the motorway provided with a stronger road surface in both directions.
“Resurfacing will be carried out between Russell Street at Emu Plains and Kingswood Road bridge at Orchard Hills,” Mr Ayres said.
“The essential work involves removing the old asphalt and replacing it with a new stronger road surface which will provide a smoother and safer ride while reducing ongoing maintenance costs.”
Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies said the resurfacing work was scheduled to minimise disruption to motorists by carrying the work out at night, Sunday to Friday from 8pm to 5am the next morning.
“Two of the three lanes will be closed during work hours. One lane will remain open in both directions,” Mrs Davies said.
“Detours will be in place when work is being carried out on the Russell Street, Mulgoa Road and The Northern Road ramps. Information about ramp closures and detours will be displayed on electronic signs along the motorway.
“Travel times will not be displayed on each section of road while work is carried out.”
During the work motorists are reminded to follow directions from signs and traffic controllers. Reduced roadwork speed limits are enforceable. The project team will make every effort to minimise the impact of work on nearby residents.
For more information about the M4 resurfacing, follow the links from www.rms.nsw.gov.au.

Creating knowledge Jobs in PenrithPenrith City Council has joined a local consortium to seek
Federal Government Suburban Jobs Program funding that will help create about 400 new jobs immediately and about 6,000 new permanent ‘knowledge’ jobs longer term.
The consortium comprises the University of Western Sydney (UWS), Penrith City Council and the Penrith Business Alliance (PBA), which was established by Council.
Penrith City Mayor Greg Davies said the consortium is seeking to develop employment space and a Corporate Centre at Werrington, which will seed the longer term development of a comprehensive business park.
“UWS has 58 hectares of land available for a business park,” Councillor Davies said.
“The land is strategically located within the planned Werrington Enterprise, Learning and Living Precinct (WELL) and forms part of the Penrith Health and Education Precinct.
“We are talking about the creation of 6,000 new local jobs that will include those in the knowledge industry such as education and research as well as the multiplier effect of creating jobs to support that industry.
“This project will create an even greater diversity of employment, investment and business choices within Penrith, meaning less commuting and more time with family for a wide range of workers.
“The Penrith Health and Education Precinct has been identified as a specialist employment precinct in the NSW Government’s Sydney Metropolitan Plan.”
The consortium is seeking $14 million of Federal funding to go with $14 million of UWS funding for the $28 million development.
UWS teams up with Penrith Business Alliance and Council (L-R) Susan Hartigan (Director, TAFE NSW. Western Sydney Institute),
Ben Artup (Penrith Business Alliance), David Bradbury (Federal Member for Lindsay), Janice Reed (UWS Vice Chancellor) and Roger Nethercote (PCC)

rains in the last week of school holidays put paid to that excitement for most players. Disappointment abounded when all Nepean district first round matches were cancelled.
Despite the round 1 cancellation, a couple of fields were opened by the weekend. Thanks to some very dedicated coaches, two U/10’s Emu Plains FC teams took advantage of the open field status at Hunter Fields. Players and parents were grateful to the coaches for showing initiative in organising the game. Also to EPFC for opening the canteen and allowing the trial game and hosting their small sided games. Seeing the little ones running around always puts a smile on everyone’s faces.
Emu Plains Football Club still needs players to make up teams in the U6, U7, U8 and U14’s. If interested, give Anne-Maree a call on 0400 135 529.
Several Blue Mountains Football Club teams also made the most of the open field at Knapsack Park. A few U8’s, U9’s and U10’s teams had a run on a relatively dry pitch. BMFC is also looking for U5’s, U7’s U8’s and U9’s players. Enquiries to [email protected].

PTC IronPeopleOn Sunday May 6th over 30
Panthers Triathlon Club members will be competiting in the Port Macquarie Ironman. This is a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle followed by a 42.2km run.
Those competing have been training furiously in order to make their dreams come true. A few are hoping to qualify for the BIG race at Kailua Kona, Hawaii - the birth place of Ironman.
All have sacrificed family time, work and personal commitments for months to make the Ironman a reality. On May 6th when that starters musket goes off, every hope and dream will be realised. Panthers Tri Club committee, family and friends would like to wish all the competitors the best of luck. Lets hope they bring home some medals!
