From the EditorWelcome back for another edition of

the new look Emu & Leonay Gazette. You may recall that in the last edition

I asked you, the reader, to tell me how you’re getting on with your New Years Resolutions. I was very encouraged by the responses - not only the fact that a number of you did actually respond, but more so by the fact that a couple of you agreed that giving up chocolate was a totally futile pursuit! You can read the responses in our new monthly column on page 4 - THE LOCAL FORUM.

Now, if there’s Irish blood running through your veins you’ll be well aware that this month the luck of the Irish will be with you on St Patricks Day - March 17. Therefore, the forum for the next issue will be St Patricks Day. Have you kissed the Blarney stone? The Blarney Stone (in case you haven’t heard of it) is a block of bluestone built into the battlements of Blarney Castle in Ireland. According to legend, kissing the stone endows the kisser with the gift of the gab (great eloquence or skill at flattery). Maybe you could eloquently recount your St Pat’s day experiences for our forum readers.

This is your community newspaper. If you have any interesting local stories you’d like to share with the readers, I’d love to hear about it. Feel free to contact me via phone or email – details are on the top left of this page.

I know this is a poor substitute for Cartoon Dave’s little Emu, but I’ve included a pic of me, so you can see who you’re talking to. (I’m the one on the left!)

Enjoy your local news!Vicki

THAT’S MY BUDDYStarting school can be a little scary but

not at Emu Heights. The 51 new Kindies have been

particularly welcomed by the school’s enthusiastic Year 6 children who have been given the role of Kindy Buddy.

While each child will have a special buddy, the seniors have been busy since the start of the year working with all the new Kindies as they learn how “big school” works.

All Year 6 children will also complete two days of leadership training in preparation for leading a Peer Support group involving their Kindy buddy and children from every grade in the school during term 2.

These groups will involve children working together on activities to develop the school values of friendship, tolerance and respect.

Kindy Buddy and Peer Support are just two of the many programs designed to create and develop the school’s family atmosphere and continue to make Emu Heights a great place for children to learn and grow.

A Little Bit of PlanningJohn Saved An Additional $76,000

John at 55 …John was earning $80 000 a year with a

current superannuation balance of $100 000 and should retire with approximately $274 000 in super. With the help of a Transition to Retirement Plan, John’s final super balance would be $350 000. That’s an increase of $76 000 over a ten year period. This strategy is tailored to each individual person and has many advantages. For example, John is not taking any extra risk with his money - his super is in the “Growth” portfolio and would stay in that “Growth” portfolio. He can rollback and stop this process at any stage and it is relatively inexpensive to set up. On top of this John maintains exactly the same take home income he had before the strategy.

Once John turns 60 the benefits of this strategy are even greater, as nearly all of his superannuation is in a tax free environment.

Jane at 50...Jane is not able to access the Transition to

Retirement Scheme until she turns 55, but wanted to know how to grow her future super? The more money Jane has in super prior to 55 the greater the opportunity to maximise the transition to retirement scheme when it starts.

How does Jane increase her superannuation balance? Jane was saving $5 000 per year, into a bank account, from her wage of $70 000. Jane was paying tax at her full tax rate on interest earned on this account. After obtaining financial advice she decided to start a salary sacrifice1

program and put this surplus money into super. She started salary sacrificing $7 650pa which gave her a tax saving of $1 500 and added an extra $6150 per year into her super account. Her take home pay reduced by exactly the amount she was initially saving… $5 000. So giving up $5 000, using a different method, actually allowed her to save $6 150 per year.

If Jane keeps this going until 55 she would have an extra $30 750, earning interest in a low tax environment. This puts Jane in a great position to maximise her Transition to Retirement plan when she is eligible at 55.

Government Co-Contribution for DaveDave earns $40 000 and wants to

take advantage of the Government Co-contribution scheme 2. Basically the Government will match each dollar you put in super up to a limit. Dave paid a special contribution to his super of $730.00 and the government matched this amount and added another $730.00. Dave said that’s about the “best return I’ll get all year”. 1The Government places limits on contribution into super. 2 There are income limits imposed on this scheme.

Please note- This information is of a general education nature and should not be acted on. Individual financial circumstances vary and a tailored solution, specific for your financial situation, should be developed in consultation with your financial planner.

DON’T WASTE MARCH!Say goodbye to bulky and difficult

to dispose items while helping the environment with three clean ups in March.

First on the agenda is Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 4 March. Visit www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au to find your nearest site. All you need is a hat, sunscreen, pair of gloves and some sturdy shoes to lend a hand on the day. The more volunteers who join in, the more our environment comes out a winner.

Next, collect unwanted and broken electronic items for Penrith City Council’s free E-Waste Drop Off Day on Saturday 10 March.

Last year, more than 125 tonnes of electronic waste were recycled by residents at two Council drop off days including electronic or battery operated items such as televisions, VCRs, DVD players, computers, monitors, keyboards, game consoles, small kitchen appliances, phones (land line and mobile) and the accompanying cords. Rather than clog up landfill, these items get dismantled into their various parts for recycling and reuse. Visit www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au for details.

Become a champion recycler by rounding up this trio of events with Council’s Chemical Clean Out Drop Off Day on Saturday 24 March. Both Drop Off Days run between 9am and 3.30pm at Jamison Park, with entry via Jamison Road. Load the items in your car or trailer and drive through. The friendly staff will unload the items for you.

Items you can drop off at the Chemical Clean Out day include paints, solvents, household cleaners, car batteries, motor oils, pesticides, poisons, gas bottles and fire extinguishers. Visit www.cleanout.com.au for more details, including safe transport information.

Don’t waste March - contact Council on 4732 7615 to find out more about these upcoming events.

THE LOCAL FORUM where your opinion counts

Resolution RevelationSo. Here we are ... into the third month

of the year. If you were bold enough to make any New Year’s resolutions, you’ll either be on your way to fullfulling them, or you’ve resolved to never again make any such ridiculous claims.

After confessing my failure to give up chocolate this year, I was encouraged to hear from Simone of Emu Heights. She said, “I thought briefly about giving up chocolate, but as Lorna Jane says, I’m no quitter!” I’m with you there, Simone!

Madeleine of Glenmore Park told me she’s given up on the whole idea of resolutions. Why? “If I don’t make one, I don’t feel guilty about breaking it!” Yeah, wise words from a very wise woman.

Gary from Leonay is attempting, for the fifth year running, to give up smoking. He’s made it for two whole months now and feels confident of success this time due to the added incentive of impending fatherhood. “My wife will kick me out of the house if I breathe smoke anywhere near her or the baby.”

There were, as always, a number of resolutions to eat less and exercise more and people reported varying degrees of success with this. Jack reckons he was a bit over-amitious in assuming he can manage both. He figures if he exercises enough, he should be able to eat what he wants. And so far, he’s sticking to that revised plan. He hasn’t lost any weight, he says, but he’s feeling a whole lot better from the regular exercise.

Sally of Glenbrook resolved to be grateful. She has managed, thus far, to succeed in waking up each morning this year and acknowledging something in her life for which she is grateful. I was so touched by this beautiful resolution that I have resolved to do the same. Thankyou Sally for your beautiful contribution and your inspiration.

Celebrate history with Penrith City LibraryPenrith City Council’s Library will honour the City’s past

with the 11th annual Makings of a City History Conference on Saturday 10 March.

Titled, ‘Venturing Above and Beyond’, the conference will delve into the history of early exploration of the land and air.

Penrith City Mayor Greg Davies said this year’s topic was particularly appropriate. “Few explorations have had more impact on Western Sydney than the crossing of the Blue Mountains of which next year is the bicentennial anniversary,” Councillor Davies said.

“Author Ross Brownscombe will tell the story of those who attempted to blaze the trail first for the successful crossing by Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth in 1813.”

Other exploration topics include the early aviators William Ewart Hart and Lesley Jones and the history of the Evan District’s settlement and people.

“The annual History Conference is a wonderful opportunity to come together to celebrate the history of our City.

“Council is committed to honouring this history, for to truly understand Penrith today it is important to look back to the Penrith of the past.”

The conference will be held in the Richard Bonynge Concert Hall at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre from 8:30am. The cost is $40 which includes an information pack, tea and coffee on arrival, lunch and morning and afternoon tea.

To register or for more information call 4732 7687, email [email protected] or visit www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au.

Budding genealogists are also encouraged to explore their personal history at a Family History Fair the following day, Sunday 11 March, in the Lower Lounge Area of the Penrith City Library.

The Fair will include short talks on various topics and tips on how to research your family tree. It will run from 10am to 4pm and entry is by gold coin donation.

Chickens On the RunCon Proestos loves chickens – BBQ chickens. He loves them enough to want to pack up his life in Canada and move back home to take over a little takeaway on the Highway in Emu Plains, give it a new name and a new lease of life. Bring in the chooks (only the best quality Steggles grain fed, barn raised, 100% free of hormones

or steroids) and there you have it – Chicken on the Run. And in the three months that Con has been there, the Chickens have been running out the door.

Ten years ago, Con owned the Glenbrook Takeaway. He decided on a change of scenery, sold up shop and moved to Canada, where put his energy into running night clubs, pubs and restaurants.

Canada was a great experience for him and his wife Angela and their two teenage boys, but they’d had enough of the cold weather. As luck would have it, Emu Plains Charcoal Chicken came up for sale, so Con jumped at the opportunity and jumped on the next plane home.

Con has given the old shop a vibrant new red and yellow facelift and has introduced some exciting new products, namely his spicy Portugese burgers and his super special ‘7 secret ingredients’ stuffing. Angela will be adding her flair with fresh daily salads and some mouth watering new deserts.

Chicken on the Run is happy to offer event catering. Panthers Triathlon Club members have been benefitting from this service – they’re running hard to catch those delicious BBQ chickens after their club races!

New ‘No Stopping’ Zone To Improve Highway Flow at Emu PlainsA new ‘no stopping’ zone to be installed on the Great Western Highway at Emu Plains by Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) will improve traffic flow and road safety.

“The new no stopping restrictions will apply during the morning peak, from 6am to 10am, on the northern side of the highway from Station Street South to around 50 metres east of Billington Place,” Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said.

“The proposal to establish the new zone was developed in response to community requests to investigate the impact of unrestricted parking on eastbound traffic flow on the Great Western Highway at Emu Plains.

“Community members said they were concerned vehicles parked on the highway at this location restrict it to one lane which often causes congestion.

Chocolate Dangers at Easter TimeWe all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate...

lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal.

If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body.

Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal.

The bottom line - keep the chocolate well out of reach of pets!

Protect your family pet with free microchipping

Penrith City Council is helping families keep track of their pets by offering free microchipping at St Clair Autumnleaf Neighbourhood Centre on 15 March, from 10am to 2pm.

Penrith City Mayor Greg Davies said microchipping was a must for any responsible pet owner and one of the most important things you can do for your family pet.

“In NSW, it’s a legal requirement to have dogs and cats microchipped, so this is a great opportunity to have your pet microchipped for free. Having you dog or cat microchipped ensures Council rangers can easily identify and return lost or stray animals to their rightful owners.

“Council understands the importance of pets to families and is pleased to be able to offer this free service to help families keep costs down,” Councillor Davies said.

“To further help pet owners, a vet will be on hand to conduct free health checks. You can also get tips on training and expert advice on a range of animal issues from an animal trainer and Council’s Companion Animal Officers.”

G’Day USACalling all students from Nepean High,

Glenmore Park High, and all Penrith Schools! Two very dedicated staff members – Judy Leonard of Glenmore Park High School and Helen Stevens of Nepean High School – have combined forces and resources to give the students of these schools the opportunity to spend next summer holidays in the USA on a cultural tour. The program is open to all high school students, from year 7 to year 12 and, so far, 5 students from Nepean High and 3 from Glenmore Park High have committed to the venture.

In January 2013 students from these two local high schools will be travelling to America for 20 days, visiting Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Universal Studios, San Francisco and spending 10 days living with an American family and going to school with them in the Seattle area.

This will be the eighth time Helen Stevens has been involved with this program. It is a National Program run by a Melbourne based company, EWT (Educational World Travel), and is fully approved by the Department of Education. It is a broad-based life experience development program that encompasses all aspects of life.

Off to the USA – Nepean High School students Jeremy Dance, Joshua Kaimoana and Shannon Dennis

The students will experience another culture, assimilate into another family and develop coping mechanisms for life.

Past experience has proved that students come back with a different, more mature outlook on life. The home-based stay with a host family gives them the opportunity to experience another culture first hand and appreciate the differences in two English speaking countries. The students spend several days at school with their host and thus experience a totally different education system.

The weather in Seattle is very cold in January and more often than not the students will encounter snow, which may even cause the cancellation of school for a day.

Keira from Glenmore Park High will be joining the tour. She said, “I’m really looking forward to meeting new friends, and to experience what it’s like to live in another country (for the 20 days we are there)”.

If you’re looking for a fantastic, fun-filled, educational and life changing experience, start saving and get involved. For more information please contact Judy Leonard at Glenmore Park High School on 4733 0155 or Helen Stevens at Nepean High School on 4728 7236.

Continued from pg 1... Mr Bradbury said he is delighted to see the huge amount of volunteer hours that have been put into protecting this important site.

“It is great to see local residents and students giving up their time to conserve our local environment. The Nepean River is an icon of our community and it is so important that we protect its natural integrity.”

Gerard Delaney is the coordinator of the school’s participation in this worthwhile project and is thrilled that Sydney Bass Fishing Club’s aims are very much in line with that of the school. The joint objectives are to build a more environmentally aware culture in Australia, by giving school students the opportunity to better understand the environment and to encourage students to consider environmental conservation as lifestyle choice by providing them with relevant information.

It is hoped that the collaborative efforts of the college and the fishing club will lead the way to developing systems of communication between communities and schools that can be replicated or used as a model for development by other schools.

Mr Delaney said, “this is a great opportunity for the students to put what they learn into practice. They are working with the local community for the good of the river”.

Fabulous Jessica FoxLeonay teenager Jessica Fox continues

to impress. She finished off 2011 by topping the state in the HSC for PDHPE. Now she’s set to top the country in the women’s K1 slalom and secure a ticket to London as part of the Australian Olympic kayak team.

With only one position open on the Olympic team in the women’s K1 slalom event, the former Blaxland High School student is now the top contender after a blistering performance in the Australian Open Championships held at Penrith in February. Fox finished second behind Austria’s Violetta Oblinger-Peters.

There are two more Olympic selection races to go. A win in either one will assure Jessica of a place on the Olympic team.

17-year-old Jessica was pleased with her strong finish in the Open, but she knows that the job is far from complete.

“It’s a bit of a confidence boost but I know that it’s not over yet. There’s still a big fight ahead,” Fox said. “Hopefully I can approach the next race how I did this one and be fresh and ready to race again.”

All of the Olympic hopefuls will be feeling the pressure coming into the Oceania Open. “There’s pressure on everyone. It’s pressure we put on ourselves because we want that spot,“ she said.

With two former Olympic champions as parents, the odds are stacked in the right direction for Jessica to win the right to compete for Australia in London this year.

Cyclists on a mission: (L to R) Barbara Hughes, Trish Carter, Peter Williams, Kate Dukes, Graeme Smith, Elissa Kitchin, Paul Wills, Matt Shield, Paul Dukes, James Francis, Glenn Williams

Cycling for the Greater GoodMonday 9th April 2012 will be a big day

for a dedicated group of local cyclists. Known as the Cycling Cerebrums, the 12 cyclists will begin a 7 day ride from Penrith to St Kilda in Victoria, all for a great cause.

Co-Director of The Cycling Cerebellums, Barbara Hughes said, “we are a charity committed to helping out young people suffering from life-altering and debilitating injuries, diseases and disabilities.”

Through the collaborative efforts of the Team, Partners and Community, the Cycling Cerebellums are raising money to fund vital research, support and prevention projects for children with neurological conditions. Through engaging Australian communities their aim is to raise awareness for the areas most in need.

The inaugural tour will see a group of ordinary people embark on an extraordinary journey between Penrith and St Kilda - cycling and raising funds - $10,000 for the Commercial Travellers Ward at the Children’s Hospital at

Westmead.Their Mission is to educate, provide and

inspire individuals about neurological conditions and the differences we can all make to others lives. The Cycling Cerebellums are proudly supported by many generous sponsors who share the cyclisits passion for this inspiring project.Barbara said, “the affiliation between our charity and our sponsors is one based on respect, friendship and ownership. We value each others role and aim to reach our fundraising goal together.”

The Cycling Cerebellums have many fundraising adventures happening all the time, all of which support the Commercial Travellers Ward and The Children’s Hospital of Westmead. Should you wish to become involved by donating or purchasing one of their awareness bands or T-shirts please check out their website: www.thecyclingcerebellums.com.au

“The Cycling Cerebellums can and will make a difference on this journey and we look forward to having you all support us on our way.”
