Responsible behaviour - Bullying- Additions to the Award SchemeAs you know Scouts Australia is currently reviewing its Youth Program which means examining the reasons we have Scouting in Australia and the appropriateness of some of our activities. CHIEF COMMISSIONER

ENC MPASS

This month it is timely to look at the Adults in Scouting policy and remind all team leaders that it is time to undertake the Adult Development Plans (ADP) with your direct reports. The Life Cycle of an Adult in Scouting covers three stages but it is the third stage of the Life Cycle, the decision for the future, which many Adults in Scouting struggle with. This is the process to deliberately make decision for future roles following the review and self-appraisal in joint discussion. Do you reassign the person to a new role, retire them, or renew their current appointment. All Commissioner roles are for three plus three years and normally are not renewed. Section Leaders may be renewed if appropriate.

Review processMost people work better if they have, from time to time, the opportunity to discuss how they are doing and where they are going.

ReviewsA review in Scouting is simply an opportunity to look at what has happened since someone started their role, or since their last review and to see what further support and guidance they might need. It should not be confused with the performance appraisals that many people have experienced at work. Reviews can be both formal and informal, depending on what stage an individual is at in the course of their appointment.

An informal review is held at least annually, to build on the chats you have during the year. It is a chance to take stock and plan for the future.

A formal review takes place at the end of an appointment and an agreement is made whether the individual’s appointment should be renewed, whether they should take on a different role, or whether they will retire.

The review consists of meeting with the adult involved, in comfortable surroundings and discussing how the last year in Scouting has gone for them. The benefits are that the team is more motivated and the manager knows more about how the individuals in the team feel and their views on the future. It helps us in making sure that people are in the right roles, both for themselves and for Scouting, leading to happier Leaders and better Scouting delivered for our young people to enjoy.

As a result of the review process you may choose to recommend any of several possible courses of action:

- Provide the adult with training and support in addition to that which he or she has already received.

- Renew the adult’s appointment in her or his current role.

- Reassign the adult to another position elsewhere within the Branch, Region, District, or Group.

- Retire the Leader from the Association.

Remember our first priority, from the Association’s perspective, is the absolute importance of ensuring that the Youth Program is best served. If the Leader is failing to deliver a quality program, or if not a Section Leader, to ensure the welfare, progress and training of members then then appointment should not be renewed unless an alternative position is available, in which the individual could make full use of the competencies which he or she possesses.

SSS all done for another yearAfter beginning the year with the event of a lifetime (AJ2016) Scouts quickly moved on to the next closest thing, SSS.

SSS is a four day camp held at BP Park running from Friday to Monday in the middle of the winter school holidays. On the Friday morning 97 Scout Patrols and Leaders descended on the park to begin setting up their campsites for the next four days. For this camp Scouts camp in their Patrols with the Leaders in a separate camping area completely. It provides a great opportunity for a Patrol to experience independence and self-reliance in a supportive environment.

Throughout the weekend the Scouts enjoy a wide range of activities. Some of them count towards the SSS Shield while others are purely for the enjoyment and educational opportunities they provide. To round out the experience all of the Scouts and some Leaders attend the Gang Show to appreciate the theatrical talents of Scouts and Guides alike.

On Monday we were treated to a visit by the Qld Governor and Chief Scout, His Excellency The Honourable Paul de Jersey AC. He took the time to take a tour of some of the activities underway, campsites and administrative areas. The Governor took every opportunity to stop and talk with Scouts and Leaders throughout the tour.

The photo shows the Governor checking out the winning gateway.

The Governor wasn’t our only visitor. On Saturday we also hosted around 50 Cub Scouts for CCC.

We Stand TogetherThroughout life we are confronted with situations, dilemmas and circumstances that can appear to send our thoughts in a spiral. Just how the weather is unpredictable, we never know just what life is going to throw at us. One thing that we can all count on is the support that we get from each other. Whether a Joey Scout, Cub Scout, Scout, Venturer Scout, Rover Scout, Leader or Adult Member we are all members of the same Scouting Family. “Family isn’t always blood. It’s the people in your life who want you in theirs. The ones who accept you for who you are. The ones who would do anything to see you smile and who love you no matter what – The Fresh Quotes”.

Being a member of Scouting means that we are all a part of something that is truly special in that no one is ever alone. No matter how desperate times get we always have a support network that are willing and able to support each other with no judgement or prejudice.

It is not uncommon for someone to be hesitant to reach out for help as they believe their issue or issues to be too small to bother someone else with or too big that no one will be able to help them. Nothing is too small. Nothing is too big. Being a member of such a diverse group of people such as Scouting, you never will know how someone will be able to help unless you reach out to them. They could have experienced something very similar to what you are experiencing or know someone that has experienced similar. At the very least they will be able to listen to you and identify ways to help or to find someone that can help. By reaching out you never know who you can help or who could help you.

If you are in a situation where you do not feel comfortable to reach out to someone that you know, the Scout Association has Chaplains and counselling people available who you can access by contacting Branch on 3870 7000.

A group of American school children were asked to list what they thought were the present "Seven Wonders Of The World." Though there were some disagreements, the following received the most votes:1. Egypt's Great Pyramids

2. Taj Mahal

3. Grand Canyon

4. Panama Canal

5. Empire State Building

6. St. Peter's Basilica

7. Great Wall of China

While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student had not finished her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The little girl replied, "Yes, a little. I couldn't quite make up my mind because there are so many." The teacher said, "Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help." The girl hesitated, then read, "I think the "Seven Wonders Of The World" are:1. To see

2. To hear

3. To touch

4. To taste

5. To feel

6. To laugh

7. To love

The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. The things we overlook as simple and ordinary and that we take for granted are truly wondrous. A gentle reminder - that the most precious things in life cannot be built by hand or bought by man.

When we take some time to ponder these things we begin to realise just how awesome we all are and what a responsibility we have to safeguard the lives of those with whom we surround ourselves.

How does a 10 year old, help change the quality of life of other people, helping them overcome adversity and build independence? Kedron Scout Nathan Kane has found a way to make a difference.

Nathan has been a youth member of Kedron Scouts since he was a 6 year old Joey Scout, advancing to Cub Scouts at 8 years. As part of his recently successful Cub Scout Grey Wolf Award, Nathan took on a project with far-reaching positive, ramifications for other people, whom Nathan felt were less fortunate than himself.

Nathan, took on the project of planning, organising and collecting everyday toiletries, bedding and clothing items on behalf of the Salvation Army’s Youth Outreach Program. Nathan reached out to the Kedron Scout Group family to help him in his mission to make a difference to youth homelessness. This is Nathan’s request.
