Enchanted ValleyHeard and Overheard - (Continued from Cover Page)He may just as well have left it all in a pile at the end of the cul-de-sac and we could go pick out our own. However, sometimes items delivered weren’t even addressed to an address in the subdivision.

Anyway, I have spoken to Keith and made him aware of the problems. I also told him if he gives us good service, I will be informing the Postmaster of that – and, if he continues with misdirected mail, I and possibly others will be calling the Postmaster to that effect.

Hopefully, he will get his act together to give us acceptable service. He seems like a nice young man.

Meanwhile, so we can see how he is doing, if you have a problem with your mail delivery, I would appreciate hearing about it. I will document the details and I WILL contact the Postmaster if it becomes necessary. I would also like to have any positive comments as well.

Please record: date of delivery – very important to identify carrier delivering on that day.number of piecesnote if address was on your street or not on your streetnot in Enchanted Valley

Mary Purvis Arnold (Part 3)Continued from the December newsletter

of neutrality at this point, and school went on in Cypress as usual. Mrs. Arnold’s volleyball girls brought home a district championship, an achievement that occurred as mentioned earlier many times in the years to come.

An air of uncertainty filled the air as the 1940-41 school year began. The nation was gearing itself for war. A shortage of paper curtailed publication of the school yearbook that school year, and throughout the remainder of the war years. People were beginning to really feel the pinch of wartime sacrifices by the fall of 1941. Although the U. S. did not formally enter the war until December 3, 1941, rubber was already in short supply. Eventually gasoline, tires, lumber, shoes, meat, sugar, coffee were rationed to limit civilian consumption of products vital to the military. Nylon and silk stockings were rarely available because nylon and silk were in demand for parachutes. Travel was severely limited by shortages of gas and tires. Lights at night were prohibited at certain times (black outs). However, Cypress was a farming community, and farmers were needed at home to grow food for the nation. Life generally continued in the Cypress community as before, but at a slower pace.

To be continued next month .............................................................

The marriage of Mary Purvis and Forest Arnold took place on June 5, 1938 in her parents home, Mr., & Mrs. A. D. Purvis in Waller, Texas. The newly wedded Arnolds took a trip to California for their honeymoon. Upon their return they made their first home in a small rented cottage a few miles from Cypress school.

An important highlight of the 1938-39 school year was the visit of the first lady of the United States, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, to Houston and surrounding communities on March 14, 1939. This visit was in the interest of the National Youth Administration (N. Y. A.) project. I asked Mrs. Arnold what was the N. Y. A. She explained, this was a government program designed to teach youths skills to be prepared to do something well after finishing school.

Mrs. Roosevelt held a press conference as soon as she stepped off the train in Houston. She then made her way to Jefferson Davis hospital, and was gratified to know that jobs in the hospital were given to girls who had completed the N. Y. A. project. Mrs. Roosevelt’s next stop was at the Cypress school campus to visit a N. Y. A. project started at the school earlier in the year. The project consisted of a teacher’s cottage for the Superintendent. As you can imagine, this created much excitement at the little Cypress school. After leaving Cypress, Mrs. Roosevelt continued her tour to Hempstead. On her return to Houston, she stopped at Prairie View College. Both locations having N. Y. A. projects.

The Houston Chronicle reported on March 15, 1939: “The president’s wife had stopped for a brief visit at the rural school in Cypress. When word came that the president’s wife had arrived, one little fellow ran to tell his playmates that Mrs. George Washington was walking around the school grounds. Mrs. Roosevelt learned of the incident in a note sent to her at the rostrum of the Music Hall that night. She chuckles as she read it aloud.”

In December 1939 an election was held to bring Fairbanks school and Cypress school districts together as one; the measure passed by a vote 129-66 in Cypress and 90-87 in Fairbanks. The new district was named Cypress-Fairbanks Consolidated School District (CSD) and was changed to ISD in the early 1960’s.

On a National level, hopes for world peace fostered by the signing of the Munich Pact in 1938 were shattered on September 1, 1939 by Hitler’s invasion of Poland. The United States maintained a stance

Enchanted ValleySafe Harbor Biblical Counseling

11623 Spring Cypress Rd Unit B, Tomball, TX 77377

281-376-3449In today’s fast paced living, it is easy to lose our focus in life. We start out with great ambitions and aspiration to make our mark in this world. We make a five year plan stating where we would like to be at the end of that time period. We do all of this planning and working so that we can give our families the best that this life has to offer.

Sometime during the process of making our mark, we lose our focus of why we are doing what we are doing. We forget how to love our families. We tend to speak a different languages even though we still use English. We find ourselves saying the same things over and over but not being heard or understood.

Over the years of offering my counseling services, I have learned that people start out well intended, but lose their way in the process of achieving their goals. When this happens, it happens slowly over a long period of time. Family members live in the same house but they don’t know each other. They speak to each other but no one listens. It becomes a losing battle which often times ends in divorce.

You may be wondering if you need biblical counseling. Maybe you can relate to some of these thoughts:

“I am so depressed and I wonder why I even bother getting out of bed...”

“My marriage is falling apart and I have no hope it can be saved...”

“I feel trapped by pornography and can’t see a way out...”

“I have persistent sin in my life that I can’t seem to overcome...”

“I don’t even know if I am a Christian...”

“No one listens to me”

“My wife consistently nags me to my breaking point”

“My kids are out of control”

“I think my spouse is cheating on me”

“My husband doesn’t love me”

“My wife doesn’t respect me”

If you can relate to the thoughts mentioned above, I want to encourage you in that there is hope for you. Start-ing over with a new marriage has statistically proven that it doesn’t fix the problems. Most people who divorce will divorce again. This is because “if you always do what you’ve always done, then you’ll always get what you’ve always got”.

Call and get an appointment set up today. Our service is no charge to you. This is a free service! Yes it is free. It costs you nothing.

- In His Care, Pastor Gordon White
