Learning Objectives
1. Identify Gen X parenting characteristics.
2. Explain why we should want parents and supporters of Gen Z students to become advocates.
3. Implement parent and family support ideas into NSO practices.
4. Differentiate information that parents and supporters want to know.
5. Share other parent advocate approaches currently being used.
6. Plan communication enhancements in an advising program.

Think about a past example of dealing with a
parent in an advising situation
• How did you feel knowing you were dealing with
a parent? What was your immediate reaction?
• How did you respond?
• What do you think the parent thought?
• Pair & Share

Increasing Parental Involvement
• Research conducted by Kapaona and Ono (2016),
declared this change in, “Re-envisioning Parental
Involvement in Higher Education: Shifting the
Paradigm of the Helicopter Parent”
• Higher costs
• More parents taking out loans (Zumeta & Hunt, 2012)
• Want to be satisfied with investment (Levine & Dean, 2012)
• Sociocultural – parent/school relationships through
primary/secondary education (Levine & Dean, 2012)
• Social pressure to be present (Kohn, 2014)
• Not prepared for brusque transition (Levine & Dean, 2012)
I N D I A N A U N I V E R S I T Y
Why Create Parent/Family Advocates?
• Think – Pair – Share
• Committed to student success
• Perception of support linked to higher graduation and
retention rates (Smith, 2012)
• More studies have found students feel supported
when their parents are involved in their college
education (Levine & Dean, 2012)
• Overall increase in level of engagement and self-
reported gains (Bradley-Geist & Olson-Buchanan,
2013)

Generation Z Goes to College Study
Seemiller & Grace (2016)
• Uncover characteristics, outlooks, and trends of
current college students born 1995 or later
• 15 diverse higher-education partners
• Online survey – quantitative and qualitative data
• August and October 2014
• 1,143 college students
(Seemiller & Grace, 2016)
Seemiller & Grace (2016)
Gen X Parent Characteristics

• 2008 great recession
• 2/3 married; 71% w/children

I N D I A N A U N I V E R S I T Y
Seemiller and Grace (2016), “Generation X
plays an important role, if not one of the most
important ones for Generation Z: their parents”
(p. 4).
Seemiller and Grace (2016) “revealed that
Generation Z students have high regard for
their parents, and more than half take the
opinions and perspectives of their family into
consideration in their decision making” (p. 89).
Seemiller & Grace (2016)
Gen X Parenting
• More involved approach
• Sources of emotional and financial support
• Are role models
I N D I A N A U N I V E R S I T Y

one of trusted mentor (Seemiller, Grace, 2016)
I N D I A N A U N I V E R S I T Y
Generation Z Characteristics

• Born 1995-2010
• Shaped by Internet
• Will become 1/3 of population
• Most racially diverse
• Smartphone use
• Got the message in 2008 financial crisis
Gen Z described themselves as loyal, thoughtful,
compassionate, open-minded, and responsible, suggesting

Ideas Parental & Supporter Advocacy Building
Think – Pair – Share
• How can you create positive interactions with
parents and supporters at your institution?
• During NSO and first semester advising?
• What challenges do parents sometimes create? How
proactively handle?
• Evaluate what communication offered; Develop
communication strategies
• Educate self
• Educate parent
• Partner with other campus offices
• Benchmark
Discuss Scenarios
Student created fall
schedule during NSO
with advisor but later
calls back to change
schedule after talking
with parents/family.
I N D I A N A U N I V E R S I T Y
Create a scenario
recently came up:
How proactively deal with
each situation?
Reflect on Differences In Approaches
• How do your institution’s actions hold up in the
mirror when it comes to interactions with parents?
• What do these interactions look like?
• Have you prepared for the informational needs of
parents?
• How are your advisors trained to conduct
conversations with parents?
