Dear Friends,
Here we are on the cusp of another transition and a change in direction for Sherwood UMC and for me personally. As we know, any change brings with it a mixture of emotional and spiritual dynamics, such as anticipation with dreams, visions and new goals mixed with some degree of apprehension and concerns about how the impending change will affect the present stability
upon which we have built our lives.
Although arrangements are still in flux, there are very encouraging signs on the horizon for yoking Sherwood UMC and Mountain Home UMC. While sharing a pastor may call for some adjustments and give-and-take from both churches, the advantages will also become evident. Certainly, the old adage “two heads are better than one” will prove out in unforeseen ways as the combined strengths and efforts become evident as advantages to each church and the larger community. I am very impressed with the outstanding pastoral leadership being considered for this shared appointment. In a few days, members of each Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) will meet with the prospective pastor and his wife to discern and discuss possibilities for the best interface between
congregations.
There will be a delay, however, since the prospective pastor will not be available until December. This entails yet another interim appointment between July 1 and December 1. Our District Superintendent, the Rev. Kate Conolly, has suggested a retired clergywoman, the Rev. Carolynn Fairweather as an interim pastor for both churches. Her husband, the Rev. Roger Weeks is a retired United Methodist minister who may offer his pastoral experience as well. Rev. Carolynn has served the spiritual and emotional needs of patients and their families in hospice and hospital chaplaincy. Her gifts of emotional insight and spiritual support will provide
an excellent transitional bridge.
Although this may feel like a major change for both Sherwood and Mountain Home churches, this is an amazing opportunity for dreaming new dreams and envisioning new possibilities. And, remember, this is so like God, leading people towards new things while retaining the values and heritage of the
past.
"Then, after doing all those things, I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see
visions.” (Joel 2:28)
Blessings,
Rev. Penny

Graduation Sunday
is June 10
Our Graduating H.S. Senior – Trey Hornberger
One of the hardest things for me in youth ministry is sending off our young
people to their new adventures in life. This year is definitely no exception. Trey
Hornberger has been part of our church family for over a decade. He will
participate in graduation on June 8th from Sherwood High. We will honor him on
Sunday, June 10th at the 9:30am service. Trey’s leadership and personality have
been such a blessing to our youth group. He definitely lives his faith out in his
actions, deeds, and words. Trey will be going to the University of Oregon in the fall. He is interested in Political
Science and Economics. Trey, we will miss you, but we are so excited for your new experiences. Good luck Trey
as you continue to spread such a great and humorous light out to those around you. We love you!
Our Graduating College Student – Amanda Apple

We are so pleased to tell you that

MY PASTORAL CAREER Rev. Dr. Penny Christianson
“What you are is God’s gift to you, what you become is your gift to God.” Hans Urs von Balthasar, Swiss theologian I read this quote when I was about ten years old, it became my core value. My major life goal, both personal and professional, has been to dedicate my life as a gift to God. From this goal comes two others, to become a wise woman of spiritual vitality and integrity and, secondly, to help clergy and churches heal and grow spiritually.
As a life-long learner, I have continued my education and training to include a number of career avenues; chaplaincy with its focus on the spiritual vulnerability of illness and death, pastoral counseling working with people as they reflect on their life issues, addiction counseling and rehabilitation, coaching to help people realize their full potential, and, most centrally, parish ministry as pastor.
It has been a sacred calling and privilege to serve God through these various ministries.

Dear Friends at the Sherwood UMC,
Greetings! Since it is Bishop Hoshibata’s intention to appoint us as interim pastors, we are very much looking forward to spending the next few months with you. We wanted to share a little of our story so you can get to know us better before we
come.
Pastor Carolynne Fairweather, D. Min, retired two tears ago as the Chaplain of Legacy Meridian Park Medical Center, serving for 13 ½ years. Prior to that, she was Chaplain, Director of Public Relations and Bereavement Coordinator at the Hospice of Morris County, Morristown, NJ, serving for 8 ½ years before moving to Gresham, OR. She earned M. Div. and D. Min degrees from The Theological School at Drew University and two BA degrees from William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ—one in elementary education and one in psychology. She taught for five years before starting her family. She was ordained in the United Church of Christ 25 years ago and re-ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church 9 years ago. She is serving as an assisting priest at Christ Episcopal Parish, in Lake Oswego, and a retired Board Certified Chaplain with the Association of
Professional Chaplains.
Pastor Carolynne was born in England and moved to Lake Hiawatha, NJ, then to Rockaway, NJ where she grew up in the Lutheran and Presbyterian churches as the oldest of two brothers and one sister. She has two children a son, Michael married to Jen, living in Pequannock, NJ; and a daughter, Lynn, married to James with granddaughters, River and Dreya, living in Southeast Portland. She is also serving as an on-call chaplain at Providence Newberg Hospital and enjoys cooking, baking, reading and
weaving.
Pastor Roger Weeks, D. Min. has been retired due to back problems for the past 13 years. Previously, he served as the Chaplain for Kaiser Permanente Hospice in Portland for 13 ½ years and had a private psychotherapy practice. He served the UMC as pastor of Capitol Hill, The Dalles, and University Park where he earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from The Theological School at Drew University in Madison, NJ. Prior to that, he pastored Tygh Valley and Dufur UMC (a yoked congregation)
for four years.
He was the Chaplain in Spokane, WA at Lakeland Village for 4 years and wrote curriculum for the mentally challenged for the National Council of Churches for two years following that before moving to Oregon. He was the pastor of Last Chance, CO,
Meet Interim Pastor Carolynne and Pastor Roger
UMC during his seminary years at Illif Theological School in Denver. He completed 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education at the Institute of Religion and Health in Houston, TX after earning his M. Div from Illif. He is a graduate of the University of Puget Sound with a BA in Psychology. He was ordained an Elder in the UMC 43 years ago, and is currently a retired Presbyterian minister in the Presbytery of
the Cascades
Pastor Roger is the middle one of seven brothers. He was born in Everett, WA and raised in Estherville, Iowa and Monroe, WA. He has three children: a daughter, Tami, married to Josh with grandchildren, Tylor and Simone, living in Milwaukie; a daughter Taire, married to Steve with granddaughters, Kaitlyn, Sarah and Raechel; and a son Todd – all living in Newberg. His hobbies are reading, building and flying RC airplanes and he enjoys serving as a docent and the Chaplain of the
Evergreen Air and Space Museum in McMinnville.
We were married 16 years ago at Faith UMC in Troutdale and are currently members of Christ Episcopal Church and Mt. Home UMC. We have lived in Newberg since 1998 and for the past year in a duplex at Springbrook Meadows, part of the
Friendsview Retirement Community.
As we serve with you at Sherwood, more of our story will unfold in our preaching and teaching as it intertwines with your stories and rises up to praise and give thanks to God, our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. All of you are in our prayers and we hope that our time together will be blessed as we prepare for your new pastor and new partner
in Christian ministry, Mt. Home UMC.
Blessings,
Pastor Carolynne and Pastor Roger
