2 On The Vine Spring 2013

As there is cold and wet weather lingering, we have a great bunch of red wines here for you to enjoy. Apart from

some local cabernets, there are a couple of brilliant Rhone style blends from a top Barossa vintage as well as the

real thing off the slopes of the Rhone itself and some well-priced pinot that you will love with lighter meat dishes.

And we haven’t forgotten the whites. Check out the imports which are a point of difference and the usual mix of

quality riesling, chardonnay and blends that you will need when serving seafood and light vegetable dishes. It won’t

be long before we taste a huge range of sparklers and you can look forward to our recommendations soon. In the

meantime enjoy this Spring selection of still reds and whites and remember our staff are always willing to help with

additional advice. Cheers! Rod Properjohn

a Spanish Passion

Radio Boka 2012 Tempranillo Valencia (Esp)From Valencia in the east of Spain where the Mediterranean Sea caresses terra firma. The area is better known for its oranges than wine but this young red is a gem. Full of berry and dark cherry, it has a little chocolate complexity which adds to the structure of subtle tannins and medium body. It’s fresh and is enormous value; serve with a meaty paella, the internationally-famous dish of the region.

Archaeologists believe that grapes were first cultivated in Spain sometime between 4000 and 3000 BC. Under Roman rule, Spanish wine was widely exported and traded throughout the Roman empire including Britain. Today Spain is the worlds third largest producer of wine.

Marques de Tezona 2011Macabeo Sauvignon Blanc (Esp)Macabeo is a widely cultivated white grape variety in Spain and makes sparkling wines as well as still whites. Here it’s blended with sauvignon blanc to provide a crisp dry still white wine with citrus and stone fruit flavours and a distinctive acid finish. It’s unadorned by oak and is an aperitif style that suits light tapas dishes such as smoked fish or white anchovies. Great value!

Howard Park 2012 Miamup Sauvignon Blanc SemillonThis Margaret River youngster has a lively tropical fruit lift to the grassy and citrus components of the two varieties and a long zesty acidic finish.Drink now and over the next 3 years as the semillon’s structural contribution allows this regional blend to blossom. An absolute treat with a grilled fillet of white reef fish and a crunchy salad.

Gibson 2012 Eden Valley RieslingFrom the celebrated Riesling subregion of the Barossa, the Eden Valley. You’ll notice a light straw colour and glistening appearance, lively fresh citrus and tropical fruit aromatics and a palate of citrus and apple that stretches to a sherbet-like mouth-puckering finish. Best with delicate seafood - think flash-fried sweet scallop or squid and a light crunchy salad.

Nannup Ridge 2011 ChardonnayA modern young Dijon-cloned chardy from Nannup with a bright lemony-straw colour and a lifted lemony/poached pear nose and a waft of smokiness. The palate is a well-balanced mix of stone fruit and citrus with oak playing a subservient part and a mineral edge takes over at the finish. Try this with Chicken Kiev - chicken breast wrapped around garlic butter and parsley, covered in bread crumbs and oven baked.

white wines

Corte Giara 2012 Pinot Grigio (It)Want to drink the real thing? It’s as Italian as a Fiat, a grigio from Veneto in the north-east and one of the popular dry whites worldwide, especially with food. Straw yellow and with a hint of pink which is not unusual for the variety, it has an uncomplicated melon-like nose and a palate that is rounded, dry and soft on the finish. Drink with salted fish cakes (bacalâ) or shrimp omelette, two classic dishes of the region. Screwcapped.

Hamelin Bay 2012 Semillon Sauvignon BlancDelightful refreshing blend from the Five Ashes home vineyard in Margaret River. You’ll see a bundle of cut grass, lemon and gooseberry here in a long lively and dry package with an ideal crisp cleansing finish. Although the wine has had partial oak fermentation and lees stirring, it drinks more as a traditional simply-made style. Serve with goat’s cheese.

Skillogalee 2012 RieslingA smart vintage in the Clare Valley together with this well-known riesling producer combine to offer this delicious young wine. A mid-straw colour with flashes of green, it has floral and ripe citrus aromatics and a flavourful sweet-fruited palate of orange and tangerine that extends to a drying stone-like finish. Stir-fried tiger prawns and crunchy Asian greens with this. Drink now or will age beautifully.

Greywacke 2012 Sauvignon Blanc (NZ)Made by legendary Kevin Judd of Cloudy Bay fame, this new label is attracting lots of attention. Pale straw and green, the wine has classical herbal aromatics mixed with passionfruit and lychee. The palate is a concentration of gooseberry and citrus that lingers long to a crisp and drying acid finish in typical Marlborough fashion. Serve with deep-fried crunchy whitebait.

Harewood Estate 2012 Reserve Semillon Sauvignon BlancThis Reserve wine is different to the standard Harewood SSB in that it is made from higher altitude Denmark fruit, free-run juice and is part-fermented in large French oak. You’ll notice some cheesy textural complexity from the yeast lees more than oak characters and a medium-weighted palate of citrus and clean acidity to finish. Serve with a seafood pasta.

white winesCowaramup Wines 2010 Margaret River Reserve ChardonnayMade from biodynamic fruit grown in the Cowaramup area or as it is known locally, ‘Cowtown’. This has a wealth of stone fruit (nectarine, peach), fig, subtle oak and mealy characters tucked up in a very quaffable package. It’s beaut right now and will drink well for the next two years. Serve with a crispy roasted organic chicken and your favourite veg.

Forester Estate 2011 Margaret River ChardonnayA family-owned winery in Wildwood Road in the warmer north of the region, this has the harmony of a great orchestra. There is a depth of stone fruit, a lift of citrus, beautifully integrated oak, subtle nuttiness, smokiness, creaminess and persistence. It plays a clever tune and will do so over the next three to four years. Try with Wiener Schnitzel (thin veal slices in breadcrumbs).

Cherubino 2013 Laissez Faire FianoLarry Cherubino adopts the contemporary non-interventionist technique in grape growing and winemaking with the Laissez Faire label. His fiano, a southern Italian grape variety grown in Frankland River, has wild honey aromatics and a rounded flavourful palate with great textural mouthfeel and a dry slightly nutty aftertaste. In short supply. Serve with roasted zucchini.

Fattori 2011 Danieli Soave (It)We love the freshness and balance in this along with the citrus fruit and pear, minerality and subtle nuttiness. Soave is one of the well-known white wines of Italy and hails from the north-east near Venice. Garganega is the main grape variety used. Screwcap closure here which protects the freshness. Serve with baked artichoke, a popular dish in the locality.

red winesTarrawarra 2011 Yarra Valley Pinot NoirA well-priced pinot from this prestigious Yarra winery, the colour is a bright and vibrant ruby, the nose is fresh with red fruit and a little spice and the palate is a generous mouthful of juicy fruits and subtle gaminess. The later-than-normal cool and damp vintage has not been a negative; the wine is a beauty, especially with a rack of new-season spring lamb.

Famille Perrin 2010 Reserve Côtes du Rhône (Fr)A grenache, syrah and mourvedre blend with a bright crimson colour and a nose of red berries and lively pepper. The palate is a very quaffable mix of plum and spice with balancing tannins and a little meat stock flavour as an extra. 2010 produced terrific wines in this part of the world. Unscrew the top and serve with plump and juicy barbecued beef sausages.

Ringbolt 2011 Margaret River Cabernet SauvignonYouthful vibrant purple-looking cabernet from the Wilyabrup parish of Margaret River. Has regional olive, blackcurrant and eucalypt leafiness, and also discreet oak characters along with drying chalky tannins and good length. Drink now or cellar for at least another five years. And when ready to drink, open it and enjoy with a char-grilled beef steak.

Llama 2012 Old Vine Malbec (Arg)Malbec is as sure-footed as the llama in the foothills of Mendoza and Argentinean culture generally. The grapes in this wine offer dark red fruit (plum and berry) and an inherent spice (cummin, dill) and light oak treatment rounds out the flavour profile on the palate. Its gentle tannins and balance make it appealing for drinking while its youthful, and it’s absolutely perfect with traditional asado - various barbecued meats. Cork seal.

Salomon Estate Norwood 2010 Shiraz CabernetSmart vintage on the Fleurieu Peninsula, just south of Adelaide where these grapes are gown and this contributes to the bold purple crimson colour. The nose is a wealth of ripe plum and spice and the palate is a firm structure of lively oak, grippy tannins and drying acidity. Warm-region classic Australian blend that suits a hearty meaty casserole. Will age for a few years if cellared well.

red winesNanny Goat 2012 Pinot Noir (NZ)Appropriately named as the grapes for this were grown in the mountains of Central Otago near Queenstown. It packs a punch this pinot, as it has fleshy black cherry and plum as well as a spicy background and a little earthy mushroom which adds to the complexity. A firm dry finish prevails. Don’t see why you wouldn’t serve this with roasted capretto (baby goat) and a fresh salad.

Scorpo Noirien 2012 Pinot NoirRuby red with a mauve edge this is a youthful full-fruited Mornington Peninsula wine from a very good vintage, following a cool and wet 2011. You’ll notice a round fleshy style with savoury cherry, red currant and spice, well structured with texture, fine tannins, good length and a drying finish. A cracker with crispy pink duck breast and a sweet fruity sauce.

A to B 2011 Mount Barker Cabernet SauvignonImpressive young cabernet here, once past the distinctively different label. There is the rich deep-red colour and the classical varietal notes of blackcurrant, black olive, a whiff of eucalypt, firm tannins, good length and cutting acidity. This is tight as a drum at the moment but will relax and release its goodies with a little breathing. Great with a roast leg of lamb and sweet mint sauce.

Tomfoolery 2012 Skullduggery BarossaThis is a mataro/shiraz from the Barossa and a textbook vintage. It’s been treated traditionally by using an open fermenter, a basket press and matured in older oak. A deep red colour, it has a fruit cake and plummy nose and a firm tannic structured palate with ripe juicy black fruit, earthiness, some savoury characters and a drying finish. Perfect with a rich meaty stew.

Teusner 2012 Joshua Barossa ValleyA classic Rhone blend of old-vine grenache, mataro and shiraz and it’s the best of the style we’ve seen from the Barossa for a couple of years. Beautifully floral with red fruits, it has grainy tannins, a supple mid palate yielding a generosity of plush fruit and spice, a little savouriness and a silky balance. This is not oaked and allows the purity of fruit to do the singing. Try with slow-cooked veal shin in tomato and wine sauce.

The Yard 2011 Riversdale Vineyard Cabernet SauvignonBlack/red intensity of colour and strong blackcurrant and tobacco leaf aromatics pre-empt the layered palate of dill spice and dark chocolate, cedary oak, chalky tannins and firm acidity. Lovely young single-vineyard cabernet from a very good vintage in Frankland River. Will age beautifully or drinks well now, especially with a slow-cooked shoulder of lamb.
