Rio heartache is an educational opportunity for judo star Kelly

Shropshire-born judo star Kelly Edwards is hoping to use her Rio Olympic heartache as a force for good, by working with the next generation of sporting stars at local schools.

Kelly, who was born and raised in Telford, has been forced to abandon plans to represent Team GB at the Rio 2016 Olympics on medical advice after suffering several concussion injuries during qualifying competitions.

But she said the injury setback had given her more time to spend working with county sports partnership Energize on their ‘Champion Programme’ over the coming months.

“Inspiring the next generation of sports stars is really important to me,” says 25-year-old Kelly, who competed for Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics and for England at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, winning a silver medal.

“Missing out on Rio is a big blow, but I should be at the peak of my career when the 2020 games in Tokyo come along, so there’s plenty to still focus on.”

Kelly is part of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ group of Shropshire sporting stars seeking to inspire young people through the Champion Programme.

The aim of the scheme is to deliver motivational messages to local youngsters from people who have competed at the top level, with the world’s best.

“This is not just about sport – our programme is aimed at giving young people the inspiration to succeed at whatever they do,” explained Energize chief executive Chris Child.

Anyone wishing to arrange a Champions Programme visit should contact Helen Madden at Energize on 01743 297191, or visit our Sporting Champions page for more details.

Funding available for communities in Whitchurch who show commitment to improve physical activity in the town

Residents, community groups and organisations in Whitchurch are being invited to be part of a new initiative to address physical inactivity in the town.

The call out is part of Shropshire’s Everybody Active Every Day community fund project, a new community-based scheme which is being piloted in four areas across Shropshire.

The project has been set up by Shropshire Council’s public health team to help motivate communities to come up with ideas and sustainable projects to improve physical activity within their locality.

An Everybody Active Whitchurch working group has been set up and the scheme was launched on Saturday 2 April 2016 in the town. The group are engaging and working with the local community to come up with ideas for projects. Groups and organisations in Whitchurch will be invited to submit their projects to encourage physical activity, in particular amongst the less active communities. The projects can be targeted to any or all ages across the life course, from early years to later life. Those successful projects will then go out to a public vote in the town.

Councillor Mike McDonald, Mayor of Whitchurch, welcomed the news, saying:

“If you’ve got an idea for a project that would encourage more people in Whitchurch to be more active, then let us know. The projects can be targeted at one specific age group or appeal to everyone, from early years to later life. All projects will compete for funding through a public vote, so you will need to be prepared to gather voters.”

Whitchurch is one of four towns initially offered to take part, based on evidence of need. Other towns identified include Broseley, Wem and Craven Arms.

Anyone interested in joining the working group can contact Nicki Young, community enablement officer on 07990 085187 or email [email protected]. Click here for further information.
