Women Make Coaching Event a Success

Energize held their first Women Make Coaching event on 15th April 2016 at the University Centre Shrewsbury. It was designed to provide an introduction to the project aiming to get more women in to sports coaching and support those who already are. The event attracted 25 local women, a mixture of experienced coaches, and those who are completely new. On the night, delegates had the opportunity to hear an inspirational speech from Telford based international judo athlete Kelly Edwards who believed her coach has been central to her success. Other speakers on the night included Julie Mackintosh from Sports Coach UK and local tutor Nicky Fuller who provided the group with an excellent opportunity to discuss why coaching was important to them, and what their issues were. Some great discussions were had amongst the group providing the impetus to organise similar networking events in the future to help support coaches in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and give women a platform to liaise with other like-minded coaches to share their experiences and discuss what matters to them within their sports or activities. Women Make Coaching is a campaign ran by the 6 CSPs in the West Midlands. Energize offer one to one tailored advice and guidance to help coaches start, get qualified or learn more in relation to coaching. Anybody who is interested in starting or progressing their coaching journey can join the programme. Support includes help finding coaching opportunities, advice regarding training required to be a coach and to get better, help finding mentor support, qualification funding where required, and invitations to networking events with other local coaches. If you are interested in joining the programme, please complete this survey.

The London Marathon 2016 Almost 40,000 runners took part in the 36th London Marathon on Sunday 24th May 2016. Congratulations to Dana Power from Bridgnorth who completed the distance running in his Puff The Asthma Dragon suit, to raise funds for an asthma charity. Read the full story. Former Energize team member, Helen Freedman, completed her first marathon in aid of Shropshire Disability Network; “As for the day, I felt incredibly inspired by others. I started in the second to last pen and was amongst people who weren't runners, they were just passionate people who felt that this was a way they could help their cause by raising money and supporting charities. Then there are all the volunteers, families and friends supporting, all of whom have played essential roles in the months and weeks leading up to the big event. The support was absolutely phenomenal all the way round. I took my iPod to listen to music but never even put it on, the crowds and fellow runners were all the entertainment I needed. I felt so proud and overwhelmed to be part of the event and I would highly recommend everyone to run London marathon.”

There's more info about SDN at the following link: http://bit.ly/1qhB08U or http://shropshire-disability.net/best-foot-forward-for-helen-in-the-london-marathon/

Congratulations to the many more runners, raising money for fantastic causes and getting their heart beating faster along the way.

Major investment to enhance the sporting Workforce

Two leading sports organisations have announced a major initiative to create better strategic alignment and clarify the sporting landscape. Sports coach UK and Skills Active have collaborated to run the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), the independent, public register which provides regulation for health and fitness instructors. The immediate benefits of this initiative to the 30,000+ registered members of REPs are continued quality of service, protection and the opportunity for further relevant professional development and on-line learning, ensuring they are properly equipped to meet the emerging needs of the government’s new sports strategy. Social Return on Investment in Sport: A participation wide model for England. New research has for the first time valued the social impact of sport in England. Commissioned by the Higher Education Investment Fund and supported by Sport England and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the team of researchers found that for every £1 spent on participating in sport in England, £1.91 worth of benefit is generated in society. The research, which used a Social Return on Investment (SROI) approach, estimated the social benefits from sport compared to the total estimated costs of providing sport. Download a copy

No plans to charge for Shropshire Parkruns Shropshire’s runners can continue to take part in Shrewsbury and Telford parkrun events free of charge, landowners have pledged. Telford Town Park and The Quarry in Shrewsbury both welcome hundreds of runners every Saturday for the weekly Parkruns, a national scheme which has events the length and breadth of Britain. This week Stoke Gifford Parish Council announced that it was going to charge parkrun UK to hold its events in Little Stoke Park, near Bristol. The council said it is unfair to expect non-running residents to pay for the upkeep of pathways. But both Telford & Wrekin Council and Shrewsbury Town Council say they have no plans to charge. http://www.parkrun.org.uk/ludlow/ http://www.parkrun.org.uk/shrewsbury/ http://www.parkrun.org.uk/telford/

Playing Fields Legacy Fund PFLF’s main objective is to get more people, especially the young and disadvantaged, playing outdoor sport through more effective use of playing fields. Over many years there has been a significant decline in the quantity and quality of playing fields across the country. There is no statutory obligation for local authorities to provide leisure facilities; and, as community playing fields are inherently loss making, there has been a chronic lack of investment in their management. Through making small grants, the PFLF enables local organisations to lever in much larger amounts from funders such as Sport England and the Football Foundation. For a number of successful applicants, a grant from the PFLF has been transformational. The maximum grant amount is £10,000 but awards are usually below this limit.
