energy efficiency for school kids
DESCRIPTION
This is a presentation with a purpose of educating school kids (7th grade) about the importance of energy efficiency and also connecting energy usage with the larger picture that is Earth. This is a first of a series of presentations I am doing at Vidyavardhaka school in Mysore. Before the presentation, the students were already aware of the concepts of electricity generation, transmission etc. After the presentation, the kids were able to say that a proportionate amount of coal was burnt every time they wasted electricity. To summarize, I quote one student who said at the end of the presentation, "Sir, why can't they replace the bulbs (incandescant) in Mysore palace with CFLs? That would save a lot of coal from being burnt and prevent a lot of pollution".TRANSCRIPT

What are the forms of energy?
Mechanical
Electrical Energy
Gravitational

What is electricity?
It is the same way a dynamo light switches on in a bicycle
How does a bulb glow when you switch it on?
![Page 5: Energy Efficiency for school kids](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022070302/54792afa5906b58a048b464c/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
What is electricity
How does a bulb glow when you switch it on?
Huge turbines rotate at power stations to create electricity

In what ways do we generate electricity?
Coal Hydro Wind

What happens when we waste electricity?
When you leave a bulb on for 1 hour, you are responsible for burning approximately 30-40 gms of coal at the power plant

How do we save electricity?
Fridge insulationDefrost regularly
Keep the back surface clean
Solar Water heaterSwitch off lights always
X√
Use CFLs, not incandescent bulbs
Remove mobile phones & adapters when not charging

Saving other forms of energy
Inform corporation if a street light glows all day
Save waterFill vehicle tyres with air at least once every
month, save fuel
Walk where it is possible, Save fuel
Send letters to government to use energy efficient lights
